Such as: it didn't happen, or it was antifa, or it was just a tourist visit. Lots of far-right hyperbole.

Indeed. And unlike antifa protesters who are fighting against inherent racism and the rise of fascism, what were the insurgents fighting?

Democracy.

They deserve lengthy gaol terms to contemplate their folly.

As does their leader who incited the insurgency.

The video coverage of the insurrection, especially the videos shot by The New Yorker will forever stand as testament to what really happened. The Republicans and some specific posters to this discussion can try to deny it all they want but the videos tell the irrefutable truth.

Desert Tortoise is right.

Well little doubt as to the writer's pov.

I agree that it is good that the writer is giving us the truth.

Brutally beat police officers?

Yes. This is well documented.

And flagpoles are really weapons that can bring down the US Government?

They clearly didn't. However, an attempt was made. As before, Trump supporters are not intelligent or competent, so their efforts were doomed to failure.

So much hyperbole around this incident.

Biden is definitely helping the GOP in more ways than even Obama did.

Yes, he's showing what the future can be like, thus facilitating the self-destruction of the GOP cult.

But what's this got to do with the insurgency?

6 ( +6 / -0 )

Flouting all evidence and their own first-hand experience, a small but growing number of Republican lawmakers are propagating a false portrayal of the Jan 6 attack on the Capitol, brazenly arguing that the rioters who used flagpoles as weapons, brutally beat police officers and chanted that they wanted to hang Vice President Mike Pence were somehow acting peacefully in their violent bid to overturn Joe Biden's election.

Well little doubt as to the writer's pov.

bass: Biden is definitely helping the GOP in more ways than even Obama did.

I know what you mean. I see Biden's 60%+ approval rating and I immediately think he's playing right into the GOP's hands.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

Staying on topic. It was clearly an insurrection.

For the life of me, I can't imagine how it must feel to blatantly lie and do so knowing the facts. I'm not sure who said it but I've heard that "Character is the first victim of success". I've heard it other ways, such as "Success cannot suffer the limitations of Honor".

No matter what these politicians say, or these posters here claim, I will not disbelieve what I see in the video. Trump's supporters tried to destroy the democratic process of America.

Not anymore considering what is happening on a daily and minute-to-minute basis with Biden and if it were that bad, Republicans wouldn't be gaining seats as in the case of Texas.

Republicans gaining seats in Texas?!??! I never thought I'd live to see the day.

Hang on though.... isn't Texas... kind of fairly safe Republican territory? One of those... what do you call them... "red" states? Sorry, I'm not that impressed now that I come to think about it.

Any comments on the insurrection Bass?

Of course not. He's obviously pinned his colours to the all-new and improved, shiny and sparkling 100% Trump-lovin' GOP. Their downplaying of the whole issue basically makes them look bad, which makes their supporters look bad by association, and I doubt that sits well with their egos.

I have to admit, maybe this whole "fire Liz Cheney" was a dark plot by McCarthy, McConnell, and Cheney...to free her so she can attack Trump while not being a member of leadership...

The Repub leadership know they lost the WH, the know they lost the Senate, and they know they lost the House in 2018....they know Trump is a loser. They know he can't stop talking about the Big Lie rather than Biden's policies or help elect winnable Repubs. They want to ditch him ASAP so they don't lose again in 2022 and 24.

What better way to do that than to con him that they're firing Cheney for not being submissive enough, placating him, but what they're really doing is cutting her loose to savage Trump - just like she is doing on Fox's Special Report today....

Maybe McCarthy and McConnell have found "The Kraken", and are unleashing it on Trump...

Sneaky, those Repubs...

Insurrectionists don't show up wearing goofy costumes, taking selfies, and LARPing. They show up armed to the teeth, grim, with a plan.

To be clear, I am confirming the fact that Trump supporters staged an insurrection to install Trump as dictator. However, I have never and will never accuse Trump supporters of being competent or intelligent.

Well, he's not in office, Biden won, fine, but not in second place as far as the GOP is concerned

I hope he's OK with being #1 in the GOP while not being President.

All of this stuff about January 6 is bad for the GOP. Tying yourself to Trump is bad for the GOP. He just lost by a wide margin and his ratings aren't improving. While we don't mind seeing you guys go after each other, at the end of the day the entire country loses with a crazy GOP.

The other thing that concerns us is how many Trump supporters believe the things he says despite all of the evidence against his claims. From birtherism to The Big Lie, it shows a willingness by the GOP to make decisions based on some crazy guy's wild claims, and that can actually hurt the entire country, Democrats included

Look at who started the bitherism crap.

Look at who imagined a Latino 'invasion'. A 'war'.

Look at who said 'Jawohl' to everything Putin said.

Look at who calls himself a messiah, the 'Chosen One'.

Look at all the things that this uncouth LIAR did and said. And he even sasses off about some Republicans too.

He sold the country out, and he sold his soul to the Devil. The damage he did to America is incalculable and unforgivable. He never was a POTUS, he's not a patriot, he's not an American, he's not a human being. The Bible says not to be deceived by charlatans and power-hungry liars. Even the infamous movie 'Caligula' quotes that in the opening credits. Some things haven't really changed, have they?

Well, you can only have one President at a time, Biden is definitely helping the GOP in more ways than even Obama did.

Tying yourself to Trump is bad for the GOP.

I vehemently disagree.

He just lost by a wide margin and his ratings aren't improving. While we don't mind seeing you guys go after each other, at the end of the day the entire country loses with a crazy GOP.

Yeah, the left thinks the GOP is done, they thought so in 2009 as well.

So, why did Trump, and his merry band of Eunuch Repubs, react so swiftly to cancel Liz Cheney?

Was is because she wasn't conservative enough? No, she's one of the staunchest conservatives in Congress...with a blue-chip conservative pedigree...

Was it because she disagreed with Trump's policies? No, she voted for Trump's policies over 90% of the time...

That only leaves one thing - she is refusing to support and push the "Big Lie"....

And the Big Lie is the foundation for Trump to keep fleecing his flock - keep the cult angry and aggrieved with the faux narrative that the election was stolen by Hugo Chavez and Hunter Biden...

"I'll be back", but first send in this contribution form and make sure you DON'T UNCHECK THE BLOCK...

Not ideology, not policy, it's all about the Benjamins....to pay off his lawyers and soon-due $800 million in personal loans...

I agree completely, punish those who trespassed and vandalized the Capitol. They are idiots. But don't give them the gravitas of being "insurrectionists" just to make political hay.

Heretic: one person, who did NOT carry weapons to the rally (only had them in his truck) does not an "armed insurrection" make.

Lincolnman: NO police were killed during the riot. The only person killed was a protestor (unarmed). And interestingly, there is remarkably little information about that incident available.

The GOP base shrinkage continues as they pander to alternate realities.

"Shrinkage?"

Nothing to say about the actual topic of the article? Just more parroting of "78 million Trump supporters... blah blah blah... woke... libs.... GOP House 2022... blah blah... This message was approved by the RNC...etc etc (cont. p94)"? Can't say I'm surprised.

Biden won

Yep.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

That's not a response for me, that's you talking to yourself.

It's a response for everyone, not just you, don't worry.

but there's not much meat on the bone in terms of conversations we can be having right now.

The left usually doesn't want to have a conversation except if it's just another TDS pile-on.

Why do you think we would fear that? The people spoke and Trump was a distant second place.

Well, he's not in office, Biden won, fine, but not in second place as far as the GOP is concerned, you and many other liberals are just worried that he is still a force to be reckoned with, the Dems tried and tried and failed to make sure this guy doesn't run, they failed on every single level, even the establishment Neocons are afraid of him, now that's pure power. 2022 and the clock is ticking on the first step or bringing the country back from this nonsense

-7 ( +2 / -9 )

We need to treat these deniers just like we treat Holocaust deniers. The US Republic was at risk. That's pretty serious to me and I have little time for lies attempting to downplay that.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

This was no insurrection by any means.

This is untrue. Trump supporters invaded the Capitol in an attempt to subvert American democracy, assassinate elected officials, and install Donald Trump as a dictator. That's just the truth.

I am always a bit skeptical when people who hate Trump then turn around and offer "advice" on how the GOP should resurrect itself. Just be honest and say you enjoy seeing them twist in the wind.

I don't. Trump is not a Republican, he's a traitor. We need many political parties to function as a democracy. Of course there's always the Independents, Greens, etc.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

bass: Judging by the fact that the Dems will lose the House

If the GOP is going to have any credibility at all, or even survive as a party - they must quit kissing fascist fanny and purge themselves of Trumpism and every facet of it.

No, that won't happen, the GOP establishment doesn't have the numbers or any real heavy politician currently enough to back and support a breakaway, Liz wouldn't be enough. over 78 million Trump followers and NOT ONE single Republican can match that, if the GOP wants to survive as it currently stands, the rhinos can either jump on board or become a relic and be tossed aside and fade into political irrelevancy.

The GOP needs to return to its principals and Trump is a fascist swine.

They do and have and that is why the establishment is furious.

-8 ( +2 / -10 )

The GOP cult is not the only ones playing down the insurgency.

This was no insurrection by any means.

There was no manifesto, no serious attempt to overthrow the government, they weren't armed, etc.

Authorities arrested Coffman of Alabama near the Capitol after noticing the handle of a gun in his pickup truck while they were responding to pipe bombs left outside the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee and Republican National Committee, both of which are near the Capitol. Inside his truck, they found an AR-15-style rifle, a shotgun, a crossbow, several machetes, smoke grenades and 11 Molotov cocktails. They also found a note with the name of at least one member of Congress and a judge, alongside the notation “bad guy.” Prosecutors said the combination of weapons and political messages “suggest that these weapons were intended to be used in an effort to violently attack our elected representatives.”

Riots like these will be more common.

More common?

Riots and uprisings are part of every country's history and not just confined to the past.

I just wait till the day people start rioting in Japan. Then, you know the end is near.

There have been riots throughout our host nation's history, like any other country. Some just, some unjust.

After cancelling Liz Cheney, the Repubs would now like you to cancel your eye-sight...

All those Trump banners, all those Confederate flags, all those fur hats with horns....don't believe your eyes...

The violent pro-Trump mob that ransacked our center of democracy, fought with and killed a police officer, and recorded it all on video, actually weren't there...

Those were all black BLM and Antifa members carrying "We Love Marx" banners...

Drink a glass of orange kool-aide, tap your heels three times, spin around three times, and you'll believe it too...

Shrinkage? Judging by the fact that the Dems will lose the House and that people are fighting back against this woke, cancel culture and the fear they have for possibly Trump running and the angst on both sides of the political swamp and that Republicans are gaining a few seats across the country in their districts, I would say the quite the opposite.

-10 ( +3 / -13 )

Forceful entry, smashing doors and glass, beating up cops, yeah! Just another romp, a vacation sponsered by the Traitortrashtrump. And Rude rudy yelled, 'Fight!' to them too. 'Not an insurrection', huh? The GOP needs to quit kissing fascist ass. Dirtbag Trump is a fascist and a traitor. When he has done is indefensible, inexcusable, unjustafyable and treasonous. Simple as that. 81 million Amerivans + have said NO to his hateful egotistical dictatorial crap and he's not mature enough to accept it. He encouraged this violent act beforehand, planned it - because he is a fascist pig and that's what fascism is to the core: bloodshed, brutality, hatred, violence, ego. Fascism can never be peaceful and this was the last power grab attempt by a waning whining hateful hated piece of crud to keep power.

It was an attempt to destroy our democratic traditions and processes. That's called an act of insurrection and it's treason.
