But meanwhile cases have been exploding in Japan. Why?

@gokai,

The answer is in the article:

COVID-19 numbers are likely severely underestimated as many countries have dropped their testing and surveillance protocols to monitor the virus, meaning that there are far fewer cases being detected.

It's all about Numbers....

Don't count, then no problem.

But why stick with COVID ? Why not Flu, or other ailments.., HIV / AIDS ... has that gone away ??

When cases are up, it is the leaders of each country's fault. If cases are down, they are the heroes though they don't even lift a finger.

@gokai_wo_maneku- I wonder if they really are increasing. I reckon it's because of all those free PCR testing centres that have been set up in Tokyo and Osaka. I heard that they they were handing out 500 yen vouchers to people who got tested. One woman on a news piece on You Tube said she had taken 9 tests just to get the vouchers. People who have no symptoms are going to get tested just so they can get the vouchers or get off work and are showing up positive.

The number of coronavirus deaths reported worldwide fell by 15% in the past week while new infections dropped by 9%, the World Health Organization said Wednesday.

Ok, great.

Meanwhile Japan was having record high infections the last month,

New Zealand was having the highest covid related deaths rate in the world.

Be a good agency and keep us update, WHO.

And the US still having 300 deaths per day. And they're not even experiencing a wave of infections at the moment. Better than the 3,500 per day they were having in February, I suppose. And the 4,000+ in January of last year.

Oh---a little riled because of the mention of your home country. Just reporting what has been in the news the last fee months. Don't take it so hard.

Data shows New Zealand is currently reporting more COVID-19-related deaths per million people than the likes of the US and UK as the Omicron BA.5 variant sweeps through the country.

No, I get it. They are going through a high wave of infections at the moment. Still, according to your source:

Over one million deaths in the US, and counting. That's about 25% of NZ's population. And pretty preventable, too. Hard to imagine.

With NZ, they tried a zero covid approach--and were successful with it until they gave up. The US never tried it.

Comparing NZ and the US though---NZ's population sits on half of Manhattan. At the same time, I think every small island country should have had better success--they gave up too early; Australia, UK and so forth.

My point though is China had had the greatest success in the world at keeping its infection rates the lowest in the world by sticking with zero covid,
