Aaarrrggg.
Seriously are people so triggered that they waste money of a name?
No wonder the WHO dropped the ball on Covid, it is too busy worrying about hurt butts over a name, instead of doing actual work.
kyushubill
Yet everyone will still call it
Wait for it
Here it comes
Monkey Pox
blue in green
Are monkeys offended?
These alphabet unelected organizations who are supposedly
operating in an "advisory" capacity, do overstep...
Blacklabel
Ok, so the "m" in "mpox" stands for...what?
Monkey, isnt it?
Monkeys are not a race, they are a species.
Yes, liberals have already tried that one for politics, to claim racism.

Monkeys don't feel stigmatized. When WHO employees see the word "monkey" they immediately think "blacks". Maybe they should have kept quiet about that one.
Also, will this apply to every virus named after a place? Because there are many.

Because Japanese encephalitis isn't racist??
master
quite right. The connection between "blacks" and "monkey" hadn't occurred to me until I saw this story.
It says much more about the type of people the UN employs than anything else.
This is called projection.
Farmboy
It originated in rodents and spread to monkeys, what not call it r-pox?
juminRhee
Chicken pox triggers me. When will that be renamed? ;)

MumbaiRocks!
The monkeys are offended?

As if we needed any further evidence the world is going to hell in a handbasket. Shouldn't the WHO be concentrating on more important problems, such as how a political hack came to be its chief?

For those wondering who would actually be offended.
Let me remind you, according to the new found experts Math is also racist and 2+2=4 is a Racist and discriminatory concept.
Remember George Orwell wrote:
That freedom is quickly becoming a thing of the past!
EvilBuddha
Now please don't brand that George Michael song 'Monkey' that I used to listen to as a kid as racist.
WA4TKG
Yup, yup, everything is “Racist”, that’s what you need to worry about while the next infection is killing people

Instead of wasting time on silly stuff like this perhaps the WHO should worry about real issues about to hit more places because of bad covid advice.
Canada is the first place to feel the results of long lockdown and hospital closures.
Now hospitals are overrun with children with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections combined with influenza because 2 years isolation means everyone getting at the same time.
They 6 months to get a PAP test results due to backlog cancer patients not getting biopsy results for several months resulting in late diagnosis.
Forget studying names.
Study how to fix these problems that are spreading now to Europe and how to not repeat the same mistakes.
No one cares about the name.

It is the right decision to rename the virus which has greatly impacted GAY men. It does not take away any time from the WHO for all the other serious stuff it is dealing with.
The WHO has no legal authority and each country is responsible for the healthcare of its citizens. The WHO is not a policing authority.
There are always conflicts between different countries that have different needs or targets.
The WHO is not responsible for the healthcare of countries. That is decided by their governments. It is responsible for providing leadership on global health matters, shaping the health research agenda, setting norms and standards, articulating evidence-based policy options, providing technical support to countries, and monitoring and assessing health trends.
The normative authority of the World Health Organization

On 1 December WHO joins partners to commemorate World AIDS Day 2022, under the theme “Equalize”.
Lord Dartmouth
What's racist about the word 'monkey'? Could someone please explain?
Blacklabel
COVID was also racist. I dont know whats up with these viruses and their intolerant behaviors.
Antiquesaving
So let us get this straight.
You are saying because gay men are mostly affected in the western world now it is time to rename because, what? People will associate gay men with monkeys????
Weird!
Suddenly mostly white men are getting it and now they need to change the name!
How comical in was traditionally in central Africa for years and years no one cared about the name.
So now gay men ( mostly westerners are getting it and NOW the name is Racist!

Dropped tha ball on covid? according to whom? Nameless people on the internet with severe bias\? one thing is not being able to bring out resources magically, another completely different is to fail at what is possible to do.
Changes of names of diseases and pathogens are extremely common, and there is no need to invest millions in doing it, the professionals that deal with them have the capacity to refer to them by the proper name without the need of any real investment in doing it, it is part of their professional duties.
According to the reports the name of the disease was used in this way, not the word monkey by itself, it is there in the article. Since most cases are not even transmitted by monkeys in the first place but rodents there is no real reason to keep the misnomer.
The same as everybody still call Malaria "congestive fever" or tuberculosis "consumption"? Those are even examples of much more common diseases that have had changes of name without problem.
Stands for nothing but mpox, that is the meaning of the change.
Which has absolutely no relevance to the situation described in the article, that never was about being racist to monkeys.
No group of experts is making that argument, but you can lead on and see if you can achieve similar results, just bring exampels of how the term is being used for "racist and stigmatizing" language and you will have a point.
How does this refutes the language that has been related to the name during the international outbreak?
The experts are the one that complained about the name of a disease being used in a derogative way, which made it justified to consider if a change was desirable, since it is a misnomer in the first place this is clearly the case and nobody will be affected by this change, except for people that will find more difficult to use it negatively now, is that so terrible?
