So the statement is just as offensive as using a gun.....

I am on the same page on this, obdrst. His moral standard is in question as a decent human being.

He has never learned a great teaching of MLK, Gandi, and Nelson Mandela. What do all three great leader in history had taught us?

A leadership with non violence!!

This guy is just beyond my comprehension. Very disgraceful.

oberst - Al Capone used to beat people up ( or rather bashed their heads in )with a baseball bat in the basement of Lexington Hotel.

That must be why the Wisconsin Democrats are hiding in Chicago. They're learning the Al Capone methods of leadership and voter manipulation.

Al Capone used to beat people up ( or rather bashed their heads in )with a baseball bat in the basement of Lexington Hotel. So the statement is just as offensive as using a gun. If the Koch's are not big time contributors, do you seriously think Walker is willing to stay on the line for so long ( with the prankster ) chit chatting away?

The rich gets richer, the poor stays poor , the middle class ( the little people ) still faithfully pays up every April 15........... Without union, the employers hold all the cards.

Unless you guys are all millionaires and/or own a business hiring people, you should be very afraid of this union busting business.

I heard the prank phone call on internet radio, and I don`t understand what the brouhaha is about. There is no story there. The politician was polite and consistent, and simply said in private what he has been saying in public.

All the outrageous statements were made by the prankster, who tried to trick the politician in going along with them. Well, he didn´t. He simply let them pass, apparently not wanting to get into an argument with a potential donor.

So where is the beef?

globalwatcher - I agree, There are two issues here, money and rights of collective bargain. Please read Wagnor's Act on this and come back and let me know what you think.

The key word is "government". In the 30's, the Wagner Act would never have recieved enough votes to be passed into law if it had included federal, state or local government employees. Other workers were excluded also but they don't apply to this situation. The idea was that unions shouldn't have control over the various levels of goverment. States and cities should be able to run their governments without interferrence or influence from union leaders. If the taxpaying voters didn't like the way governments were run, they could un-elect those in power or impeach them if things got really bad.

Police strikes would be devistating to a community. Runaway union demands for higher pay and benefits could cripple a tax-based society. Forcing state government to raise taxes to pay for union members that couldn't be fired would not be tolerated by the taxpayers.

I'm generally not against unions or guilds. Companies make a profit and workers should be able to bargain for a fair share of those profits. However, governments aren't for-profit companies. There is no profits to share. Government union members are paid by the taxpayer. Taxes are collected and distributed by elected government representatives. Representatives that are answerable to the taxpaying voters.

Current demands that elected representatives ignore the taxpayer and conceed to union demands is exactly why government employees were excluded from the Wagner Act.

globalwatcher - For the conclusion on this topic, I would like to emphasize that Economic and Law goes hand in hand. Capitalism and Democracy goes hand in hand. Thank god, we have a great system in US to preserve our core value; a liberty and justice for all......

The taxpaying voters in Wisconsin have dumped the free-spending Democrats in favor of a Republican and Tea Party majority who they expect to reduce the deficit and increase the numbers of businesses who will hire Wisconsin workers.

The "great system" is one of "majority rules" and the majority says there is NO MONEY, cut the deficit, create jobs. The State legislature is trying to do the job they were recently elected to do.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Wolfpack, how can unions prevent people from working? If they don't want to work in the public sector they can just work elsewhere. Don't you believe in the free market??

0 ( +0 / -0 )

At a minimum, public sector unions should not be able to prevent people from getting a job just because they do not want to pay them to promote their socialist ideology......

Wolfpack, busting union will lead us into socialism like China or to dictatorship. Please read all my blogs here.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Unions are themselves coercive. They force you to pay them in order to work in certain jobs. In turn, public unions use this money to buy politicians that will do their bidding (ie. President Barack Obama). I'm with FDR on this one, public unions are just plane wrong. At a minimum, public sector unions should not be able to prevent people from getting a job just because they do not want to pay them to promote their socialist ideology.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

For the conclusion on this topic, I would like to emphasize that Economic and Law goes hand in hand. Capitalism and Democracy goes hand in hand. Thank god, we have a great system in US to preserve our core value; a liberty and justice for all.

I am sure bloggers who are against the union do not want our country to be like Lybia, Egypt, Tunisia, China and many more. The people of these countries do not enjoy rights of collective bargain. These people have been oppressed by dictators for years.

This is what Gov. Walker is trying to do by stripping the right of workers. A big picture of this consequence is lot more serious than what we would like to see. Let's hope this Gov can come to his own senses to do the right thing. The public employees of Wisconsin are willing to compromise to accept everything except the right of collective bargain as the Gov. originally proposed. The circuit breaker is a right of collective bargain for workers. As of now, 61% of Americans in general public do not like what the gov. is trying to do. 61% of national poll are with the union while only 33% of Americans are with the Gov. of Wisconsin.

This coming weekends, the unions in many states are holding solidarity in the state capitals to help Wisconsin public employees.

Since 2000, labor unions faced 13,815 complaints of discrimination filed with the government's Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. These include.............

Labor Union faced????

EEOC is a federal legal entity and enforcing the labor law at work place listed below. The petitioners (workers) have to follow certain legal steps before appealing to EEOC. Just because Joe Blow pissed on you does not allow you to file complaint to EEOC.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is responsible for enforcing federal laws that make it illegal to discriminate against a job applicant or an employee because of the person's race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy), national origin, age (40 or older), disability or genetic information. It is also illegal to discriminate against a person because the person complained about discrimination, filed a charge of discrimination, or participated in an employment discrimination investigation or lawsuit.

Most employers with at least 15 employees are covered by EEOC laws (20 employees in age discrimination cases). Most labor unions and employment agencies are also covered.

The laws apply to all types of work situations, including hiring, firing, promotions, harassment, training, wages, and benefits.

One day these Koch bros might even wield the kind of power Soros does. I can't wait.............

SolidariTea, it ain't gonna happen. Americans are lot smarter than that.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The Rich have been strategically pouring campaign money in politicians who will work for their advantage." does that include George Soros (now that I know who and what he's about).......

skipthesong, there are many wonderful enterprenuers including Ted Turner, Warren Buffet, Bill Gates,George Soro and etc. I cannot list them all.

Do you know the difference between those listed above to Koch Brothers? These individuals have been contributing billions for a good cause in humanity. They have been giving their weath to people in needs, not just in US, but also in globe. Koch Brothers are not. You can reserch these non profit organizations how much money has been given away, what they are trying to do to make this world as a better place to live. They understand a little help what they are giving away makes a difference to their life.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

As for the Koch brothers, they are not "businessmen", they are terrorists.

More accurately, domestic terrorists. Look at the definition of domestic terrorist in the USA PATRIOT ACT.

if the act appears to be intended to: (i) intimidate or coerce a civilian population; (ii) influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion;

Sound like the Koch boys? Sure does to me.

I disagree with what the pranksters did, but they did expose this for what it is, an anti-labor witch hunt.

smithinjapan - Or, is saying you'll take a baseball bat to beat people at a meeting considered good etiquette?

Did you just make that up or read it a BarakObama-dot-com memo?

After Walker said he would be willing to meet with Democratic leaders, THE CALLER said he would bring “a baseball bat.” Walker laughed and responded that he had “a slugger with my name on it.”

-THE CALLER suggested he was thinking about “planting some troublemakers” among the protesters, and Walker said he had thought about doing that but DECLINED.

No, having that much power in the public sector is bad news.....

You are pushing a privatizing public service in my interepretation.I hope not.

ok, skipthesong, let's reduce public employees wages to a dollar per hour. We (tax payers) would love this idea for the services we are getting. Please think hard here. Then, who wants to work for a dollor? Nobody will. Then, this is where private contractors want to play to make profits. Or it would be a work place for only the riches who can afford. This idea of privatizing public school is already happening in Charter School in my state while they are enjoying government funding . Kids with disability do not have an equal access to charter school that is in their neighborhood. In my opinion, it is very unconstitutional, someday, this will be challenged to higher courts. I once worked very hard to save Deaf and Blind Schol here as they were trying to privatize it. We successfully save it for the kids with disability. All kids should have an equal access to quality education as well as everyone else.

This is a big picture what would look like if you are for privatizing public service sector;

We: "Hello, my house is in fire! Please help me!"

Privatized contracted emergency dispatcher: "Well, sir, you are in behind in payment. In order to send you a help, you need to paid off the balance. Do you want to use a visa or a master card? We do not accept personal check on the phone."

Click, and hung up.

Is this what you are telling us to fight for, skipthesong?

1)Gov. Walker is a LEMON. RECALL!" Fine, but what happens if the same thing comes up? recall?

2)ones who are fully in support, what's your view about actors in the actors guild? They're making a lot more than many of those so called "rich" self made business guys. Why do you give them a pass?

skipthesong, I am having a trouble understanding you. Please state your introduction-reasoning-conclusion just like you prepare for college papers, please. Thank you. So I can respond to your questions.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I am not posting anything that nobody already knows.

Yes, the need for employees in the private sector to form unions has been pretty much self-evident. Which is why the employer-class of people who historically abused workers have directed so many of their "precious" resources to wholesale union-busting.

The activities of any entity -- private or public -- that are clearly directed towars trying to destroy a union has to be met with the strongest opposition and contempt.

The question as to whether public service workers were ever so abused as those in the private sector isn't as important as coming at this from another angle: What right does government have to deny people the right to assemble and form an organization which lawfully represents them in critical matters of pay and benefits?

While an individual may not be abused, he or she also may not be world-class negotiators. A group, properly represented, is likely to do much better on behalf of everyone involved. It's why we enjoy paid vacation-time, an 8-hour day, a full weekend, etc.

GJDailleult, thank you for the above comment.

You have been great. Your solid critical thinking has been well appreciated.

And I know that yabits and globalwatcher agree.

You know, there's basically gonna be no middle ground. but I'd like to ask, you guys in support of the unions,

I am still waiting for those that support the unions to show me how in the entire history of our Countries birth that public servants were so abused by management that they had form a union in the first place.

Private workers, hell yeah they were abused, private companies need to make a profit to survive and to often that profit extraction came at the explotation of the workforce. Slaving in West Viginia coalmines loading 16 tons, as made famous by Ernie Ford " I owe my soul to the company store" I am not posting anything that nobody already knows.

Are our Public servants during the entire history of our Republic were ever abused in such a way

The private workers, they needed unions, they needed them bad.....Why? Because the nature between private management and the private workforce is by its nature adverserial. Management will always worry about the finanicial health of the firm and the best way to cut costs and compete, workers will always want a higher cut as the firm makes more money off the backs of their labor.

Civil servants are not constrained by such things as working to make a profit or the financial health of the company. They for the most part of American history have accepted the fact that they were immune from such upheavals as the up and downs of the market and enjoyed the most important benefit a civil servant enjoys......Job Security. It was what appealed to many to work as public servants in the place. To be able to Unionize in times in our Republic when economic times were good was nothing more than an added gift to that implicit security already promised by working a public servant.

Well times are bad now, really bad and the added gift of still being able to able to unionize and squeeze Government for ever more fat benefits and pensions other than what has already been promised by taxpayer, who is now now at severe DEBT to continue to pay for it is now over. Just the basics of having a job that is pretty much secure for a Public servant is pretty damn good right now.

I have never understood why they were able to form Unions in the first place as service and pay and benefits received from the public is an honor that is rewarded by just having a job to go to everyday.

You can't recall the WI Gov until he has been in for a year. =You may see all the state senators/assembly recalled and the whole state Gov may be forced to shut down. I believe with Walker's phone comments drastic measures will be taken. You may even have a criminal case here = no recall needed.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I suspect that the prank call makes a better story, than it does a listen. These things usually end up a disappointment as they're not quite as outrageous as the head-lines/sound-bites make them sound. Who brought up the baseball bat? The prankster?

"The governor’s plan would take away the ability of state and local public employees to collectively bargain for working conditions, benefits, or any other than their base salaries. Unions could not collect mandatory dues and would face a vote of its members every year to stay in existence."

Unions could not collect mandatory dues That bit I could give way on. But to take away collective bargaining or anything but pay? How very un-American!

And if someone says they will not negotiate, then why would I bother to show up to speak to them?

I hope this Walker guy's remaining support base

Gov. Walker is a LEMON. RECALL!" Fine, but what happens if the same thing comes up? recall?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

huh! "Two-thirds of the eighth graders in Wisconsin public schools cannot read proficiently according to the U.S. Department of Education, despite the fact that Wisconsin spends more per pupil in its public schools than any other state in the Midwest. In the National Assessment of Educational Progress tests administered by the U.S. Department of Education in 2009—the latest year available—only 32 percent of Wisconsin public-school eighth graders earned a “proficient” rating while another 2 percent earned an “advanced” rating. The other 66 percent of Wisconsin public-school eighth graders earned ratings below “proficient,” including 44 percent who earned a rating of “basic” and 22 percent who earned a rating of “below basic.”"

sipthesong, I would like to tell AGAIN you the military cannot organize unions. Military personnel has NO rights. The 14th Amends. does not extend to military." Hey, I hope you're not grinding your teeth saying that. I asked a question, what if.... My point is that public employees should not be unionized for the most part. its hard enough to fire a bad without the union, being in a union makes it harder. NYC Dept of Ed is a perfect example

Since 20 yrs. ago, the Middle Class Americans have been squeezed. We are feeling our real income have been declining while the Rich Americans income have been souring." My income has risen a lot since I got out of the army. The Rich have been strategically pouring campaign money in politicians who will work for their advantage." does that include George Soros (now that I know who and what he's about) The result is the poor gets poorer and the rich gets richer." If you feel that far down, get a better job or marry someone who's rich. Besides what does all this mumbo have to do with Wis teachers not paying into their own bennies? Every teacher I know either has their own house or live in a nice condo. Much better than I had when I drove an ambulance.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

This publicity about the Koch brothers is a good thing because these guys like to keep a low profile and most folks haven't a clue who they are. A little sunshine on their political motives and maneuvering.

sipthesong, I would like to tell AGAIN you the military cannot organize unions. Military personnel has NO rights. The 14th Amends. does not extend to military.

Since 20 yrs. ago, the Middle Class Americans have been squeezed. We are feeling our real income have been declining while the Rich Americans income have been souring. The Rich have been strategically pouring campaign money in politicians who will work for their advantage. The result is the poor gets poorer and the rich gets richer.

Now, the Rich is again with these politicians trying to bust unions. Please be honest to yourself if you are a better off than 20 years ago financially. Are you working longer or harder to get ahead to live with your means?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The military is very, very different. The UCMJ covers what you can and can't do... People who enter the military know they are giving up rights. All that being said noone would go after the military and try to screw them over without extreme consequences that would make this little strike seem like a sweet sixteen birthday party.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Good teachers need to be rewarded and bad teachers fired! You can not argue that point.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Why not in the public sector?" its bad enough that firemen, police, sanitation people strike. I like how you portrayed Wis and union based states from one of those new sites that just popped up. Wis was ranked 22nd (entire state), let's not even talk about Detroit. And even if Conn. has the best, we clearly know about the biggest - NYC which is ranked far below than satisfactory, including keeping pedophiles, sex offenders, and hookers on payroll, you still can't compare private ed to public ed as this point in time. I'm glad I'm in Japan where my kid can go to ASIJ or Saint Mary's.

No, having that much power in the public sector is bad news. You wouldn't want the military to be under a union would you? that would mean that mutinies would be legal.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Gov. Walker is a LEMON. RECALL!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Thinking even further, this is really bad for the GOP. Did they really want to pitch this battle in Wisconsin? Wouldn't have some other state been a better choice?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Why not in the public sector?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

and for the record yabits, I like to believe there is a hand in hand relationship between unions and business. but not in the public sector.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

So, where has the EEOC come down on any labor unions? The number of complaints cited against unions dwarfs the number filed against companies and other organizations." I am not comparing. I am stating. You are trying to paint some lovely picture of all unions. As for "On the other hand, unions have been some of the most vigorous supporters of EEOC enforcement of violations." I'm not arguing that. But I have never had a violation placed against me nor any company I worked for since I left health care jobs. You are trying to paint this picture that all business are inherited evil and greedy and the unions are shining knights in armor 100% of the time.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The 61% in favour of busting the union will be sorry in the months ahead. The only thing that will win a battle against government and corporate bullying is solidarity.

How come Fox News (propaganda-they have no integrity to be calledas a news channel) are not saying anything about this?

They are looking for ways to spin it. However, one of Fox's main news personalities, Shepard Smith, has reported that the facts of this story will make people angry.

Stick a fork in Walker; he's done.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Walker is just a puppet of Koch Brothers and big business. Sad.

He revealed to the tape he was thinking about throwing some trouble makers into the demonstration hoping to create some unrests; a bad image of protesters. What a corrupted dictator!

I am getting a report by John Nicholes of Nation that Gov Scott Walker may have been violated an Ethic Law and a Labor Law. And I agree. He better start looking for a new job. This guy has no character, morally corrupt, and no integrity. He is a scum of the earth.

How come Fox News (propaganda-they have no integrity to be calledas a news channel) are not saying anything about this?

They are distorting the fact that 61% of Americans are favor of union busting, and 33% are for unions.

Well, they messed it up as always. The true poll is 61% of Americans are favor of the union, 33% are against the union. They never get it streight.

yet provide children with MUCH MUCH MUCH better education

Sorry, but you're wrong again. The four states with highest educational achievement: Wisconsin, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Minnesota -- are all heavily represented by union teachers. The states with the lowest educational achievement are predominantly non-union states.

Since 2000, labor unions faced 13,815 complaints of discrimination filed with the government's Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

So, where has the EEOC come down on any labor unions? The number of complaints cited against unions dwarfs the number filed against companies and other organizations. Did the EEOC come down on all of them?

On the other hand, unions have been some of the most vigorous supporters of EEOC enforcement of violations.

and then often go to the taxpayers looking for a bailout." first of all, you're swinging in the wrong direction. I was here, fact, denouncing any type of bail out, but of course to save union workers.... we did bail a particular company out. It wasn't me who said "too big to fail" It's OK to ensure a multi-millionaire investment banker gets his taxpayer-funded bonus" if you are refering to AIG or GM, I thought the last news was that it was being pulled in by Chris Dodd

"while you're slashing the pay and benefits of school-teachers to pay for it." While you over pay teachers who refuse to take a test, who have brought a state to the lower ranks in terms of education. Besides, their pay is not being slashed, they're being asked to pay into their own benefits. I don't know why you paint them to be so special while private teachers who are forced to pass tests, aren't given such lavish benefits, yet provide children with MUCH MUCH MUCH better education. the days where people could just join a union, commit crimes (sex offenders on NYC education payroll), be lazy, thug a city or state into inflated priced projects are coming to a close.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

skipthesong: There is no record of the EEOC coming down on labor unions.

You are simply wrong about that. Repeating and defending such nonsense reveals a more serious problem.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

yabits Sorry, but credit unions aren't the same thing as labor unions. The EEOC never had to "come down" on labor unions for discrimination." "Unions have a long history of petitioning government for special protections from competitive nonunion firms, especially in the skilled trades and construction industries. The result has been a kind of institutionalized racism. For example, the Depression era Davis-Bacon Act-which mandates that prevailing (union) wages be paid on all federal construction projects-was originally passed to protect Northern, and predominately white, unionized construction workers from the Southern, black, nonunion construction workers who were underbidding the union firms. Unions continue to fight to preserve this law despite the fact it serves no worthwhile social or economic purpose."

or you could simply just google it and find right at top: unionfactDOTcomSLASHarticlesSLASHcrimeComplaintsDOTcfm

The similarities between elected union officials and elected govt officials is quite remarkable :0

Oh no, unions represent unions.

And what are unions? Millions of workers who elect their representation.

rich people build companies and take a RISK with their money and in many cases lose it...

...and then often go to the taxpayers looking for a bailout. It's OK to ensure a multi-millionaire investment banker gets his taxpayer-funded bonus, while you're slashing the pay and benefits of school-teachers to pay for it.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Unions represent millions of middle class working people. Now who do you think rich billionaire people represent?" Oh no, unions represent unions. do you think you're the only one who's been in a union job? rich people build companies and take a RISK with their money and in many cases lose it but at the same time they create jobs and unions were supposed to make the conditions better. What they want in Wis is neither. Mind you, unions have their own history of discrimination. Give me a list of all unions led by either Puerto Rican or a Cuban-American, least you not forget, it wasn't too long ago when the EEOC had to come down on unions for discrimination.

"you guys don't like when rich biz men support politicians, I don't either. but, I also don't like when unions support politicians either."

Sorry, I can't comment anymore, I am laughing too hard.

As for the Koch brothers, they are not "businessmen", they are terrorists.

Amen, GJD!!

They are domestic enemies of the constitution and should be dealt with accordingly.

Thank you, JT, for keeping your readers up-to-date on this evolving story.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Republican governors may try to go after powerful public employee unions as part of their budget-cutting policies.

If they were really "powerful" then they wouldn't have to be spending their time fighting against idiots like Scott Walker. They would just pick up the phone and make a call, and they wouldn't have to deal with Walker.

As for the Koch brothers, they are not "businessmen", they are terrorists. Money junkies, nothing more. The purpose of business is not to promote the collection of money, the purpose of money is to promote the activity of business. Basic fact that has been understood for thousands of years, but somehow beyond the comprehension of the American alchemist class. Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan have a lot to answer for.
