Maybe it matters, maybe it doesn't. However, it's certainly going to be something the prosecutor will want to know so he can come up with the appropriate charges to get this woman tried hence why "the issue is was the child alive at all at any point". While many states have special sentencing guidelines to deal with the murder of a pregnant woman, Oregon does not. So, it's an issue. From a humanistic perspective, I fully agree with you, a pointless bloodbath.

flatearther: If the baby was born alive, this sicko will be charged with 2 counts of homicide,

I understand that, but when one murders and slices open a victim to get a baby, does it really matter at that point whether it's one or two counts of homicide? The one murder is horrific enough. That was simply my point.

This is not the first time this has happened in America, nor will it be the last, I fear.

Helter Skelter- If the baby was born alive, this sicko will be charged with 2 counts of homicide, which is why that's an issue.

This article has nothing to do with abortion or baby hatches. It's about an innocent mother and child whose lives were taken because of the actions of a clearly delusional and deranged human being. According to the article the suspect was in a relationship and had been claiming she was pregnant (I can assume for 9 months). I'm wondering why her bf didn't even notice she was faking her pregnancy? Wouldn't a normal man be a little suspicious if she never got prenatal care? Wouldn't her bf be interested in sonogram pictures? This incident could have been prevented entirely if someone had taken the time to notice this lady was deeply disturbed and possibly, as it turns out, absolutely a danger to others. My deepest sympathies to the victims and their families, no one should have to suffer this agony in a caring society.

“The issue is was the child alive at all at any point in time,”

Why is this "the issue"? The issue is this psychopath is guilty of murder.

Don't turn this into a debate about abortion - stick with the story.

This is a sickening crime, one of the most evil things that could ever happen to a human being. My heart goes out to this young woman's family and I know she is in Heaven with her child now.

The rest of you, stop using such stories to ply your crap about abortion!

This stupid, evil 27 year old deserves more than the death penalty! How in the hell can anybody cut open a mother? RIP young mother and your baby boy too.

It will only be a matter of time before "prenatal theft" is popularized. =It is truely a slippery slope.

Biological clock gone mad...lets put this in perspective, it is not a common event.

Madverts:

" This is the true, rabid anti-abortionist in action - attempting to equate this horror, to controlled and voluntary medical procedure. "

If you had read my previous posts on the topic, you´d know know I am not "rabid anti-abortionist". But never let fact get in the way of a good sneer, n´est ce pas?

About "controlled and voluntary", it certainly ain´t voluntary for the recipient.

"Ignoring the murder part for a moment, isn´t this pretty close to a "partial birth abortion", which is so favoured by progressive people?"

Well, willi - a post that doesn't concern Islam. I'm almost impressed.

Almost.

This is the true, rabid anti-abortionist in action - attempting to equate this horror, to controlled and voluntary medical procedure.

Like I said before - the fanatic "infantacide" crowd are one breathless step away from walking into the chruch on Sunday and hosing doctors down.

One of my teachers once said that there are no stupid questions. Obviously, he was wrong.

It must be really really hard to adopt if you are going to resort to this!

Its amazing a person can get by for 27 years without being found to be a dangerous mental case sooner.

Reminds me of what Charles Manson's crew did....

This is one of the most horrific pieces of news I've heard.

Find it pretty hard to get my head around this one. WTF! How could somebody slice open a pregnant woman for the purpose of stealing an unborn child? What a truly shocking incident.

RIP to the victims.

Sick and disgusting!!!!! The minds of some people are beyond imagination. RIP to the mother and the baby who had mere seconds of life in this cruel world.

As much as I dislike abortion, -I believe "prenatal thievery" is worse. These people need the stork and a baby hatch.

Grotesque and tragic. It's not the first time unborn-baby-theft has happened in the US either. The next question is, how long before the copy-cat crimes start happening in other nations?

And before the Americans get hot under the collar, in all fairness I'm sure such crimes have been taking place for centuries, but if they were so common they were certainly under-reported and so copy-cat crimes were unlikely.
