Still sounds like promises to me.

They are promises, I haven't said otherwise. But the plain meaning of the words on that website are not a promise to end COVID, which makes sense since that is not something anybody could promise, given the current state of scientific knowledge (which suggests it may become endemic to the human population and all we can do is control it, not eradicate it completely).

@OssanAmerica

said the Japanese finance minister, Taro Aso. "I have no idea how it may affect us.”

Aso Taro has no idea about anything. No matter what the subject.

The comment of the day. Thank you for that.

@rainy day...

Still sounds like promises to me. Marginal and a play on words as it may.

Fine no official promise then. However, still very close too..."""""I'll end this."""""""Bold.

What the average American hears....Why things went Blue.

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has pledged that if elected as president in the November 3 election, he will ensure free COVID-19 vaccination for all Americans, laying out his pandemic response plan just days before the US presidential polls.

In a major policy speech on the coronavirus in his home state of Delaware, Biden on Friday flayed US President Donald Trump for his policies to combat the coronavirus pandemic that has killed over 220,000 people and has had a devastating impact on the country’s economy.

He and Kamal said he would end it. Here is how.

Sounds like promises to me.

Yup, he is making promises, but he isn't promising to end COVID. His website has a list of things that he is promising to do to fight COVID, which is different from a promise to eradicate it completely.

Trump in contrast literally isn't promising to do anything about COVID or anything else for that matter (the entire GOP campaign declined to release a platform at all this year).

@Reckless.

As a former political strategist for Gary Hart.

I am sorry, This race is over. I know Pennsylvania...It runs blue.

Biden is President elect now. Unless God himself come down and changes the course of the election.

Its over.

USA is too messed up to be believed on anything. Turns out it's full of neo-n's and bullies. Double standard police based on race, mob rule. Now the supreme court is full of right wingers. Whatever USA was it no longer is anymore

If Biden can heal it a bit then great but the veneer runs deep

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Remember Joe you promised us an end to COVID. An end to it. You promised allot Joe.

I don't recall Biden promising to end COVID. I do recall him promising to actually do stuff to try to end it though, which is a pretty big difference from the current administration's approach.

Its a simple Trade off.

Biden is in that's it. Trump can contest and file suites all he wants. When Trump won. Clinton accepted defeat.

Its the way it is. That is why they call is Democracy. America has spoken and Trump is on his way out of office.

But, a word of caution. The trade off.

A world with Joe at the helm. ( We know its coming)

-SOCIALISM.-

Garbled speeches. Lock down city man. FDA slower than usual approvals for COVID inoculations and possible treatments coming. Secret deals similar like the one Hunter got. Open boarders. The Cartel's will flood America with more drugs. ( The wall will have doors installed) More illegal immigrants crossings. Everything Trump overturned in the Obama administration back on the table amplified times 10. (Lot of ground to make or what Dems call damage caused by Trump) Laxing of tariffs. The scariest thing for me is more money to countries that sponsor terrorisms. Deals like Iran got. More Chinese alliance and influence. Selling off of the American dream. To the American Nightmare.

What my Republican vote gets me going casting towards the blue. If I did such a thing. How dare I cross party lines. Right?

What I hoping I am going to get.

Peace? End of Black lives matter? (End of racial divide?) Can there be a peace and acceptance of all race religions color or creed again in America? The end of the Non- professional politician experiment in the Oval office. (A failure overall with marginal success)

So many despised Trump. Pre-Covid Trump was good for business with a booming economy, so much so China got so butt hurt about not being number one. They released COVID onto the world.

Democrats may you enjoy the next four years. That is what your going to get if you are lucky.

Be warned Democrats. The GOP has many more rising stars in its stables the your Party.

What Biden has promised us.

They are all here.

Remember Joe you promised us an end to COVID. An end to it. You promised allot Joe.

U.S. also commented at that time to Japan they will not take side to any territorial claims.

The US stated that they would not declare any position on sovereignty. This is because of US relations with Taiwan. But this means nothing when the US has stated that if China tries to take the Senkakus by force they will answer to the United States.

U.S. 75 years ago and today are very different. U.S. was shining 75 years ago. Japan was lucky meeting the best time of America. They sent us very good and intelligent people. They might have intended to build an ideal democratic country in Japan. I think Japan replied to their wishes well.

Yup, it sure was a different country back then. But the actual structure of government - Federal system with President elected through electoral college, bicameral legislature, some legislative powers constitutionally given to the Federal, others to state governments, Supreme Court appointed by Senate - was the same then as it is now. American lawyers knew then, as they know now, that such a system doesn't really work anywhere else, so they didn't even try to replicate it.

A more recent example would be Iraq, where the US also played a role in drafting its constitution and also avoided trying to replicate the design of the US system of government because of how unworkable it is.

Despite the outcome of elections, the mighty nation remains deeply divided.

Can there any brighter light at the end of a zig-zag tunnel ?

China and Russia will be very happy if Joe wins.

And apart from the Trump supporters in the US, so will the rest of the world.  Exception being Putin though, who will probably be a little disappointed to lose his puppet.

Democracy in America is, and has been for a long time, a bad joke. If a country starting from scratch wanted to become a Democracy, the US model is one you most definitely not use.

The funny thing is that Japan provides the perfect example which proves this point.

The US literally wrote Japan's constitution after the War and decided its current form of government. It could have modelled it after the US, but the lawyers tasked with drafting it viewed that as such a ludicrous proposition that they never seriously considered it because they knew it would never work. Thus Japan was given a constitution more closely modelled on the Westminster system rather than the American system despite Americans themselves being the ones who determined it.

U.S. also commented at that time to Japan they will not take side to any territorial claims. It was taken as a double standard of America in Japan. Meanwhile, China continued expansion in South China Sea building their military bases on the reclaimed islands. Now, it is too late to restore to the original situation.

When Obama was the president, Democratic government was adulating to China. Officials visited China often for trade talks while they took very cold attitude to the allied nation Japan. They said U.S. would not intervene in territorial issues concerning Senkaku.

Don't know where you're getting your false information from. During the Obama administration 2 Secretaries of State. 2 Secretaries of Defense, and President Obama himself stated that any attack on the Senkakus would invoke Article 5 of the US-JPN Mutual Defense Treaty and result in US military intervention. If you don't believe me you can look it up, it's no secret.

America is a democracy for every election, except President and VP. For national offices, the idea of 1-vote for each person doesn't even hold up, since less populous states have slightly more national representation than states like Texas, California, NY and Florida. What worse for Democrats is that those less populous states generally just want the Federal govt to go away and leave them alone.

The rules for these national offices comes from the idea that each state controls who represents it - the state, not the people of the state. Originally, many state legislatures decided who they wanted to be President and the people didn't get any direct say at all. Some states took weeks of travel to get to the Capital, and in that time, things could have changed drastically. A leading candidate may have died. This is one reason for the EC, so they could use their judgement at the time to vote differently. For the last 50+ yrs, perhaps 100+ yrs, the EC has been an unnecessary feature.

But a true popular vote wasn't the intent of the framers of the US Constitution either. That is clear. Those guys were brilliant men to come up with a system that has lasted this long. They intended for land owners to have a little more political clout. Unfortunately, the 2-party system was a certainty from the beginning. This means nobody actually gets the representation they actually want and Americans at stuck choosing from the better of 2 real choices at the ballot.

Americans are nervous about the outcome too, BTW. Both sides.

Trump has a mental disorder, in that he thinks that if he really, really, really, really, believes something, then it will become true. Part of his belief methods is telling everyone else what he believes, regardless of facts. Look at everything he has said and done from that standpoint and it becomes clearer. Plus, it is emotionally a 7 yr old boy.

There was a dream that was once America...it is now ravaged by a pathogen and willful ignorance and hate.

10 ( +10 / -0 )

A country founded on the subjugation of the native inhabitants, the importation of slaves, the exploitation of immigrants cemented together by the racism of white Europeans and ruled by a grasping plutocratic class has always relied on a gerrymandered voting system resting on its rotten foundations of voter suppression. Thanks to Trump's shenanigans, the world has been given a glimpse of what crawls under the rock of American "democracy".

13 ( +13 / -0 )

Our electoral process, for the most part, runs pretty smooth. The last contested election was 20 years ago. These things happen. Be patient. We will have the results.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

I will miss Trump. I enjoyed his personality and his words very much. For me Trump was America itself. Economically speaking it appears Biden will benefit Japan more than Trump since Biden will take more flexible policy to China and Japan trades with China more than U.S. However, in defense, I am afraid, China will become more aggressive. It was a nightmare for Japan when Obama was the president. If COVID19 did not happen, Trump could continue another four years.

So waking up to the news Thursday that the real winner of the U.S. election is known puts a spring in my step, and smile on my face and a song in my heart.

Congratulations, Joe and Kamala!

Democracy in America is, and has been for a long time, a bad joke.

Unfortunate but true.

However, if the majority of Americans want to re-elect the most dishonest politician in US history, a male who's long been known as a grifter and who panders to the country's white nationalists, then so be it.

The US deserves the government we elect.

I'm glad I live in Japan.

Democracy in America is, and has been for a long time, a bad joke.  If a country starting from scratch wanted to become a Democracy, the US model is one you most definitely not use.  It's archaic.  The vote for president should be simple enough: one vote for each person.  The candidate with the most votes across the country wins.  Not rocket science is it?

"President-elect Biden"

Get used to it.
