Uhm, you do realize there's a pretty pertinent reason most of Australia is un-inhabitated?

Can't believe anyone buys these stats.

You just need to consider how accurate population stats are in countres ike Africa, India and China - places where masses of undocumented children are born into slums and the parents have no idea what a birth certificate is.

I'm guessing we're already closer to 8 million, but that's just a wild guess.

Nothing like coming into this world already saddled with huge debt.

Praise to God, Every child is blessed with humanity. Our duty is to protect them. not to Curse on high population.

"Rights and freedoms. The freedom to speak. The freedom to raise their own families in peace and security."

The war against Islamic and other extremists continues.

i'm going to agree with SushiSake3. I think the world was over 7 billion a long time ago.

the more equality there is in the world, the sooner the birth rate will drop and we will have less violence. i blame the pope for a lot of the violence and inequality. if he advocated the use of condoms instead of abstinence, catholic countries around the world would have lower birthrates and thus crime. the US had a similar crime problem until Roe V Wade was passed and abortions were allowed, according to freakonomics. it's not PC to say that poverty breeds crime but the stats back it up. or even a cursory glance at developing nations will tell you that's the case.

That's 4000 square meters per family of four! Just in Australia. There's plenty of room for all of us.

I hope that my 4000 square meters won't be in the middle of the desert though...;-) It is true though that most people want to live close to urban centers and therefore, vast areas remain vacant and unexploited.

If all 7 billion of us moved to Australia each family of four could get a full acre (4000 square meters).

Take a drive through the countryside in so called crowded Japan, you'll see empty spaces and open fields. In fact they're begging for more people.

This is true. I can see in the past when you needed land to grow food, but Japan import mosts of it's food. And for the food that is grown here, there have been great advances in farming techniques to grow food where it was not able to grow before.

What we see in Japan is a matter of people not wanting to really do anything about it. Think about it, you now have people taking shinkansens to Tokyo to work everyday from far places. Japan has the best rail infrastructure in the world. It would just be a matter of telling the people, "It's ok to not live in Tokyo, spread out a little." But you still have that mentality of having to be in Tokyo to be proven successful, in my opinion.

I am not talking about deforesting all of Japan and taking away the green areas, but I do think the land area could be managed more effectively.

You are right, ElBuda, there is something very wrong with this world. We should learn how to share our resources. There is food for everybody but right now some have it all and throw away half whilst others have to starve.

I know I am going to get thumbed down big time, but CHINA, yes CHINA, with it's 1 child only policy...well I think they are on to something, maybe not feasible in Africa and Latin America and India but we all can not fit into super dry Australia right?? We can try but I can just imagine way too hot, no water, no food for all of the world, instead of living in Australia with 4.000 square meters it sounds more like an attempt at mass suicide??

Rich country no kids or not enough babies poor ass country kids every where but no food no clothes no medicine no schools. Dogs here in Japan have better food clothing medical care than human babies in the 3rd World!! Is this justifiable?? I doubt it. When will we ever care about our pets more than starving kids??
