Maybe this pandemic will help keep all the low-life criminals off the streets.

@Wtfjapan.

WTH? 50/50?

The Fed is dropping interest rates to ZERO. 700 billion dollar (with a B) stimulus package announced.

Entire cities closing down in the US and you say 50/50 chance of a recession?

Dude, I hope that was some kind of typo. If not, you will lose credibility.

From what I’ve read that sounds about right

@Tora

That was a bit of an improvement on ‘everything is shutting down’. Relax a bit. You’ll give yourself a stomach ulcer.

This situation is caused by a capitalist mentality.

well only a few weeks ago economist were predicting a 30% chance, things have got a lot more serious since then. I agree its probable slightly more than 50%, but you know weve got the Trump supporters feelings to consider, dont want them stressing out too much.

well you know America is a capitalist country, but recently there has been a lost of socialism creeping in, with 0% wage tax, free healthcare (test kits) and free unemployment benefits, not to mention the $1.5trillion welfare bailouts to big corporations.

Bars, restaurants, theaters and movie houses in New York and Los Angeles were ordered to shut down

That, unfortunately is a side effect of trying to wish away a disease !!!

The affect will be particularly hard on the staff who depend on tips as a major part of their salary.

Reducing interest rates means nothing for such people .

Give them paid sick leaves, better unemployment benefits over the next few months, otherwise it is going to be a bigger mess.

Govts shutting down peoples work, businesses, jobs and livelihoods, they should be underwriting peoples pay cheques and salaries then too, people still need to pay rent, mortgages, loans and put food on the table.

Thats right! So much better than a socialist or communist agenda.

Leave the poor to suffer or die and the middle classes to bankrupt, in other words?

Some stores are closing earlier to give their staff time to clean the store daily.

CDC is recommending that meetings with over 50 people be suspended, except schools, Universities and work locations. Which seems like everything people should avoid. Everyone knows that kids spread sickness better than anyone else.

Public schools here are closed:

We have been committed to keeping our community updated about the rapidly developing situation with COVID-19. ...

While our school buildings will be closed, the education process will not stop. All staff will work remotely to best support students, including delivering digital and physical instructional resources to students while they’re at home.

Outside the larger cities, American's don't really have a "bar culture." We tend to have alcohol at private homes or in our back yards with friends and families. The vast majority of Americans might visit a bar once or twice a year, though some will go for events every week, usually to watch sports with other team fans. I don't have any idea where the closest bar is located, but know exactly where the closest liquor store is and the closest Chinese restaurant and closest BBQ place.

Some Americans don't do a good job planning their meals and getting groceries in advance. We usually grocery shop every week or two based on the meal plans. For people who live in the walking-city, I can completely understand picking up fresh food daily on the way home to be prepared immediately. People in the suburbs don't usually do that.
