Can we address climate change yet or do we need more people to lose everything or die first? Getting a bit ridiculous when only America pretends it is not happening; the rest of the world is already working aggressively to reduce emissions and mitigate damage. Why is the US still asleep? People should and must demand better from DC before it's too late.

Can we address climate change yet

Chill, dude. It's just a hurricane. It doesn't have anything to do with climate change. Hurricanes pass through the Caribbean every single year. That they don't always make landfall in continental USA is another thing. But devastating hurricanes have been passing through the Caribbean since forever. Hugo when I was a kid devastated Puerto Rico. Hortense brought massive floods. George, another class four, had its eye pass in a straight line from the Virgin Islands to Puerto Rico (right through the middle from east to west), Santo Domingo, Cuba and then to the Golf. Santa Clara, my mom told me that was like nothing you've ever seen. Etc. Happens every year.

so trump throws all the cheap labour out of the country, who will clean the millionaire houses on the coast?

The looters, after they're finished looting of course.

@Garthgoyle

The problem is not that hurricanes happen, it's that they happen more and become stronger.

And that is due to higher temperatures of the ocean, which are due to climate change.

And the more the ocean warms, the strongest they will become.

Same thing with fires due to droughts in the west.

Of course help and rescue must come first for those affected, but the subject of climate change must also be discussed sooner or later. Because this will only get worse.

The comparison point would be the previous active Atlantic Hurricane era of the 1950s and '60's but is hard to say even for researchers whether the increase in reported storms is due to improved monitoring rather than more actually taking place. There were also almost as many Category 5s in the Atlantic from 1930-'39 as from 2000-2009 IIRC and have only 2 since then IIRC (Matthew, Irma).

Thank God that global warming is just a Chinese hoax.

We can relax in the knowledge that we won't be confronted by the likes like this again in our lifetimes....

Call the EPA!!! Someone is spouting science.

Rush Limbaugh tried to make the storm itself and media coverage into a left wing conspiracy, saying the storm and media are forcing people to buy supplies, making people think about global warming. Then he evacuated. Shows he can save his own skin, but what about those who listen and actually believe the nonsense he tells people?

Florida is probably lucky it wasn't as bad than it could have been. Still a lot of damage was caused.

Earlier, Trump issued a disaster declaration for the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico, which was hit by the storm last week, the White House said.

Pretty sure Puerto Rico was already a disaster.

Dud.

All news seems like hype these days.

Would you have preferred more people die?

There are other views on this. One is that hurricanes will become fewer, but more intense. The link below gives a summary of NOAA's current view:

https://www.gfdl.noaa.gov/global-warming-and-hurricanes/

(Warning: it's a US government site, so may contain traces of Russian influence. :-) )

The discussion of the effects of global warming might have been more relevant to the recent flooding in Bangladesh and parts of India. But somehow, those events haven't received as much airtime. Why is that?

Burning Bush: "All news seems like hype these days."

Says a guy who would have run with fellow denier Limbaugh.

Maher said it well, and very poignantly, in his monologue the other day when he pointed out, "It's an inconvenient truth for the climate change deniers that their mansions are on the coast and being destroyed."

katsu78: "Would you have preferred more people die?"

Then it would become the Liberal's fault somehow, and we should focus on emails again.

Wasn't West Palm Beach under a mandatory evacuation ? Florida is a very difficult state to get out of with only two main roads North and South, particularly with the high percentage of elderly I wouldn't be surprised if more people died in traffic accidents making the attempt than from the effects of the storm itself.
