Another megalomaniac being appeased by the masses. To try to say or do anything would result in disappearance.

Schmucks.

Krusty no like! Bad medicine!

And a new Communist Emperor, Xi is born.

All hail the Emperor.....or else!

3 ( +4 / -1 )

What could possibly go wrong...

He’s now president for life. President for life. No, he’s great. And look, he was able to do that. I think it’s great. Maybe we’ll have to give that a shot someday.

For a country always lauding its great history, the Chinese sure have a short memory. Another Great Leap (backwards).

What can go wrong?

It's not as if he had much of a choice. If he were to give up the reigns of power, he would likely be put on trial for corruption or other crimes (in the same way he has done to his own political opponents and the supports of other factions within the CCP). This is more about basic survival than the desire for more political power. China seems to be one step closer to another revolution.

A dictatorship, total control, no more no less.

when you know you can not be removed, the LAST thing you do is represent your people

Just when it looked like Russia and China were seriously trying to reform themselves, it's beginning to look like the 1950s are back again.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Long under pressure duty induces closer-term to death, anyway.

This is what happens when you disarm the public, you have a tyrant like this scumbag Xi take control of the country and its citizens ... How many millions have been murdered in communist China, and now with the ban of any criticism of this scumbag how many more will be murdered?

Lets see if the USA tries to out Xi like it is trying to out Bashar Hafez al-Assad in Syria .... ROFLMAO .... We all know this will not happen ... US only tries and pick fights with countries it THINKS it can win against ... That is why they have done NOTHING with North Korea.

China has a long and tumultuous history. It has not been a serene and placid place to live, ever. Only the last forty years have seen relative peace, development, and relative prosperity across the whole of their society. Getting rid of term limits for their President may reassure the rich Central Committee members that things aren't going to go all pear shaped too soon or too fast, but it isn't going to benefit China in the long run.

Chinese Communist totalitarianism has now been modernized, but is still the same basic version created by Chairman Mao. The huge masses of Chinese people might be able to go to Starbuck's and wear western fashions now instead of Maoist pajamas, but Communist party control is alive and well. The top members of the party are billionaires, and China has recently surpassed the US with nearly 600. It's now an economic dictatorship unlike anything ever seen before in the world, an enormous octopus spreading its tentacles around the world.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

The entire point of imposing term limits was due to the disaster of the Cultural Revolution. They're just asking for another one

We see the shape of this one, based on social media scores that give each Chinese a score of how well they conform to the state.

M3, maybe the scale to/for the universally recognized core values and principles underpinning the theory of a recognised democratic mandate is beyond comprehension for any present or future Government of China?....

Chinese Democracy Isn't Inevitable.......Can a political system be democratically legitimate without being democratic?

this i believe is far more worrying than any potential changes to Japans constitution.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Absolute power corrupts absolutely. As we have always known.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Emperor Akihito congratulated Xi, PM Abe congratulated Xi, Akie congratulate Xi too. Wish Xi longevity, Chinese people happiness forever, Japan-Sino relationship will reach new level. In 2018, there will be a lot of Number Ones in Northeast Asia. Japanese people are always Chinese sisters.

I hope he wears a cape

If majority of Chinese peoples accepted their leader and then we outsiders have no business for the China domestic affair. I asked my Chinese friends and they all said they support President Xi. The reason for supporting President Xi was he crack down Government officials and high rank military Generals corruption and bribery and also he is building strong military. They all want to see strong China.

You have to think about China 1.4 billion population and you can not govern China like the American style democratic Government or Australian style democratic Government.

India has 1.32 billion population and it has a western style democratic Government. The corruption and bribery of the Federal Government and local Government officials are in every level and the caste system is still practiced in India. The roads are terrible condition and farmers living standard are very poor. Homeless and beggars are everywhere in India.

The West should not interfere in China domestic affairs. Only Chinese style Government can govern peacefully over 1.4 billion citizens. China will never go back to Mao Zedong era. Today, Chinese peoples freedom and they have enough foods on the table than the Mao Zedong Communist Government. If they happy with their Government and then it's good for them.

Of the minority group of peoples do not happy with their Government and then they should move to Australia or America.

chop chop, there is no if in China. If Xi promises Japan to grow the same speed as China does, majority Japanese will be happy to replace Abe with Xi, if they have real freedom to choose leaders.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

Well, that was about as subtle as a brick to the head. He might as well march out wearing a cape and demanding that everyone kneel before their new God. Leaders serve terms because they're too incompetent to lead indefinitely. Most can't even do a good job with a single term. This is nothing more than a move by Xi to hold onto his power for as long as possible. i.e until he gets assassinated by his own people. That tends to happen with tyrants and dictators: they get assassinated.

majority Japanese will be happy to replace Abe with Xi

Not even close. Abe's popularity might be dropping quite fast because of the recent scandals, but he will never be so unpopular with the Japanese that they would choose Xi over him, especially since Xi is bullying Japan (and China's other neighbours) and trying to force the Asia-Pacific region under his rule. Japan does not want another tyrant at the helm.

if they have real freedom to choose leaders

More freedom than in China. The people of China didn't choose this. They didn't have any choice. Xi or death is not a realistic choice, especially when your family's lives depend on that choice.

Xi is expected to expand his yearslong campaign against corruption within the party

Well Xi, in order to get rid of corruption in your party: you're going to have to send everyone in it to jail. Yourself included. Then you'll have to let the people of China vote fairly and democratically for replacements without blackmail or death threats.

Fox Sora Winters, let us not assume, just do it. Establish a United State of Northeast Asia. Then let have a fair, open election, by Japanese standard, and give Chinese a chance to choose new leaders, and put Xi, Abe, Moon, Kim, Putin, Battulga, all on the list, on one Chinese condition: performance for the past 5 years. Would you bet your head on the winner ?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

United State of Northeast Asia... that is a terrifying prospect..

I hope I get the chance to take my wife and her family far away if anything like that looks like it will happen, besides which I if I didn't leave would probably end up in some camp somewhere if I stayed around as I believe in freedom of speech and expression, even when its directed at dear leaders, dictators and prime ministers.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

NZ2011, don't be too cocky. Your wife might divorce you and choose the United States of Northeast Asia.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Ah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha, ah ha ha ha ha... good one.

She, along with all Im sure the absolute majority of Japan would never live under Chinese control by choice.
