Only here would someone propose that infants be given the right to vote. What a great community and site

I say because they are citizens. We could change the citizenship law to where one acquires citizenship at the age of majority (whatever the country deems fit), or we could grant all citizens the right to vote. Would you be in favour of all people named Peter not being able to vote in your country?

Weak government-sponsored white-washing

Isn't white washing race based used in acting (casting whites instead of other races)?

Well this narrows it down to about 50 million suspects.

Having been through the Brexit referendum that has split the UK, I would suggest that having a referendum over this was a supremely bad idea. The government in power should have decided whether to do it or not, on the basis of their electoral mandate. Australia will probably get a similar split and be divided for some time to come

Structural or certain procedural changes require a referendum.

Just a thought, but wouldn't it be easier to just install pantographs on cars, and install catenary cables over the roads, like they do with electric trains? No filling up the car needed as its externally powered, just like electric trains.

No one should work more than 5 hours a day, imho. And Keynes even agreed with me, going further: "no one should work more than 16 hours per day, based on increases in productivity"...and that was back in the 50s and 60s.

I'd say the better choice would be to RAISE the age to 25. Voting responsibly is not child's play.

I've never understood why we have a minimum age for CITIZENS to vote, but not a maximum age.

The only reason the current government in NZ wants to lower the voting age is due to students in vast numbers support Labour

Similar thoughts were actually brought up by politicians in regards to giving blacks the right to vote in the mid 19th century and ensuring such in the 1960s. Same with women in the 1920s. People are not just a demographic. They have their own minds. I know kids who have left leanings. I know other kids who have right leanings.

16 is too early but adding in the fact that Gen Z are the least educated 16 year olds ever and easily manipulated by simple trends this is clearly a political play

Anyone of any age is susceptible to political manipulation. Should we ban people from voting who can't pass a poll test?

increasing the parliamentary term from the current three years.

This would decrease voter input as the voter would need to wait longer to express his/her views on Parliament, including the "get out" view. While Parliament can get rid of a govt (executive) through a confidence vote, and the govt can call new elections, the people should get an input much sooner too. I would say decrease the term to 2 years or less.

giving all prisoners the right to vote

Do prisoners lose their citizenship upon entering prison? Of course they should be able to vote. Hopefully, it's not losing the right to vote forever as in some countries.

A party must currently gain at least 5% of the party vote, or win an electorate seat, to gain representation in parliament but the review suggests this threshold should be lowered to 3.5%.

The at-large proportional representation seats are only 40, so the natural threshold percentage for entering would be 2.5% (please correct me on the maths). I say just go with the natural threshold—it makes it less complicated and more transparent.

Right wing leader of the ACT Party David Seymour said in a statement ... he was not supportive of them.

All parties who wish to have voters should always support expanding the franchise. I'm sure the parties who were against women suffrage suffered after women were given the vote.

More democracy, please.

I would lower the age to birth. The reason? New zealanders and most people around the world are given citizenship in their country at birth, not age of adulthood. As such, by denying them the right to vote, they are denying up to a quarter of the population voting rights.

Further, the arguments they say about women voting back in the day are the same argument they use against children voting now (eg they'll just vote the way their husband/parent votes, they don't understand the issues, they need to get back in the kitchen/school and leave the politics to us).

This voice body isn't even in parliament and is advisory. Why didn't they look towards new zealand, their neighbour, if they wanted real change and not just political optics?

New Zealand had reserved seats for Maori within parliament. If Maori (indigenous) ancestry, you can choose between the Maori ballot (electorate) or the general ballot (electorate). In addition to that, both Maori and general also get a second vote with nationwide proportional representation. This allows more parties in parliament which is essential for getting multiple views.

Perhaps the mask will be like what shirts were to humanity years ago. Perhaps they will be required to enter stores, not for health reasons, but for modesty and to keep the shock away from seeing a bare face that only belongs at a beach or in the comfort of one's own home.

Posted in: Japan to consider allowing tattooed youths to join SDF See in context

u_s__reamer

Tattoos should not be taboo. The Maoris and other Polynesians, tattooed from head to foot, were fierce warriors and formidable fighters. Of course, swastikas and SS runes are another matter and every military and police force must always be on the alert to weed out recruits that wear their fascist insignia invisibly in their psychopathic minds

Will there be a tattoo approval board to examine each tattoo? What if the runes originally meant something else? What if the "swastika" is backwards (and a religious symbol) but shows forwards in the mirrors? What if people are offended by a cross as well (crusades killed many people and Jews as well)?

divinda

Today 06:58 am JST

More likely the reason is not to let them "join" but to make them fully eligible if there is a draft.

My understanding is that the SDF cannot have a draft as it is not a military, and the members are merely classified as special civil servants. As such, you cannot draft a registry clerk any more than you can draft an SDF member.

May 31 10:46 am JST

Japan's lower house on Tuesday passed a bill to raise the age of sexual consent from 13 to 16 to protect children from sexual abuse

Sitll WAY TOO LOW! I think it should at least be 18 or 19 because what decision can a 16yo make without a sound mind?

Well, the human mind doesn't fully develop til 25 at least, and some need doctorates, so perhaps make the age of consent 30. Anyone who so much as thinks of touching a 29 year old (doesnt matter if he/she wants as a 29 year old is below the age of consent and cannot legally consent) will be Labelled a you-know-what.

Sangetsu

How much gas was guzzled to produce the hydrogen for the new race car? Currently more than 95% of hydrogen is produced by burning fossil fuels.

Don't know about this lot, but the article does say water electrolysis can be used to get green hydrogen. It's electrically splitting the hydrogen from the oxygen. Solar, wind, or even nuclear (mostly green energy) can be used to generate. And water surrounds us.

A gasoline burn is much worse than a hydrogen burn. Tech has developed for both. Imagine if after the first gasoline car accident that they banned gasoline. Hydrogen is just as safe now

The best thing is not to take nude pics and share them, this is a silly trend these days as part of the moral decay that’s tearing at the heart of society . So many lack a decent moral compass these days

Not even moral compass, just the knowledge that wireless companies (90% of people take pictures with their phones) actually save the data/pictures too. They might pop up as a reminder (google memory from a month ago) without warning or filter. If you must, go old school.

Nothing substantial. The ease of getting off with a slap on the wrist just because of age would likely promote parental vigilante justice.
