Store-bought underwear doesn't do it for these guys. It doesn't smell unique enough. (Unique- a major theme in Japan) When my girlfriend's underwear was stolen from my drying rack, she got angry and demanded to know why I put them outside. I told her I had no idea some guys do that. (I've learned so many cultural things about Japan) I told her he was probably wearing it on his head like an Ultraman mask while shaking hands with the unemployed.

Yuri Otani: "sodai gomi as a prize?" Well, a Camaro is a pretty cool car. How many were recalled? I heard TEN MILLION Toyotas were recalled. Enough with the flag waving, please. That's just barely-masked jealousy. This place should do well if they keep the unique service. They'll provide another small but nice cultural bridge and maybe, someday, as different peoples' minds open, we'll hear less right-wing ranting.

You know what they do with the underwear? Probably wear it on their heads like an Ultraman mask whilst shaking hands with the unemployed.

Posted in: Too much katakana contributing to Japan's malaise See in context

Japan's malaise is not from America, it's from several generations of Japanese right-wingers controlling their culture and media. This produces a culture that does not encourage imagination or individuality or analytical thinking. Non-intellectualism is a permanent feature of Japanese culture now. Blaming things on America is just crybaby whining.

Yeah, that 'carry my cross' comment was just weasel words, trying to guess what will please Westerners.

Tokyo Tanuki, Thank you for relating that important fact Re: death rates for Allied POWs vs. Japanese POWs. I can't imagine what 888naf is on about.

Seems like squashing freedom of speech with death threats is the latest "traditional Japanese custom".

Even Noam Chomsky, uber-critic of U.S. policy, has said that blaming the U.S. government for 9/11 is nonsense. Enough said.

I don't see this as a problem. Which country would you rather live in? At least in Japan and the U.S. or Europe you can drink the water in any city or town and not get sick. The air is breathable. China's power lies in it's millions of exploited poor people. Only THEIR buildings (especially schools) fell down in the 2008 earthquake. If that's what it takes to be #1, it's a meaningless achievement.

That's because they are constantly told that violence only happens in the U.S. and are actively encouraged to dismiss bad things that happen in Japan.

LFRAgain: The author INDEED states that "no doubt American policy played a role in this" regarding Japan's refusal to apologize. Read the article again. Carefully. Tkoind: The U.S. has indeed taken responsibility for the atomic bomings. I was told that they did it. Look up 'responsibility' in the dictionary so you can use it correctly. I feel your leftist dogma keeps you from understanding other's writing. Read the article again. Carefully. I myself am a liberal. Your anti-bipartisanship shpeil is simply boilerplate. I heard it over 30 years ago when it was Soviet propaganda.

Lisa Gay, the degree of outrage about Hiroshima rises in direct proportion to how much one knows about Japan's actions in that war. Don't try to blame American policy for Japan's refusal to apologize. You need to stop relying on the leftist tenet of blaming America first. Then you will be able to write articles that display a depth of intellectual awareness, balance and maturity.

Posted in: Why is there so much criticism of the quake relief effort in Haiti, whether it is of the U.S., Japan, China or others? See in context

Who is criticizing the Americans or the relief effort? A few bitter, judgemental cranks whose opinions were formed long before the quake. A bunch of nobodies who hide behind the anonymity of the web.

The U.S.A. doesn't want Haiti. We already have enough crummy crime-infested real estate, we don't want or need any more. We want to help. Too bad those who see things through a leftist frame of reference will predictably assume the worst and claim things they really have no clue about.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki are indeed trying to use the Olympics to help wash the blood off their hands for supporting Japan's war effort until August 1945.
