"The number of teaching staff who requested leave for mental illnesses stood at a record high of 5,478."
isn't this even more alarming?
and no one cares.

Sorry to see them go because I did take advantage of their dirty cheap flights when I was backpacking in South East Asia. I remember one time I was In Kualar Lumpur, and Just decided to go to Langkawi an Island about 1 hour from KL. Me & GF just walked to AirAsia ticketing asked to purchase to return tickets KL- Langkawi, and it was 6000円 round trips for 2 people :)

It has been raining non-Stop in Tokyo since Thursday morning, and here I thought the typhoon is already with us. So you mean, the real one is still on it's way?

My Japanese friend showed her mother my picture, and the Mom's immediate response was Kowai 怖い。Some might want to try and explain the nuances, and background to this common comment to foreigners, but its frequency is a cause of concern. ( in this picture i was even wearing a nice tuxedo, and with a broad smile)

1.During a job interview in Tokyo I was asked to pretend to be from a certain European country or the US to maintain the companies image for a certain clientele if i were to be offered a Job. If I agreed to that then the Job was mine. I just walked out of that small interview cubicle disgusted.
2.As someone has already mentioned above getting a house in Japan is gruesome process. I searched for at least 20 apartments on the HOMES website, identified the potential houses/ rooms i was interested in, made my trip to the fudosan, i showed them the apartments i was interested in, 11 of them they told me directly they do not accept foreigners, and the remaining 9 they will make phones calls to the owners, and get back to me the next day with the answer, next day they called me all 9 said 外国人だめです。My dream of staying in a nice clean apartment of my choice was gone.
The legendary Empty train seat is still a realityWhat about the Black people image in Japan, do you still struggle to find your dream date here lol?

A modified hello-work covid-19 influenced program? Go line up at the city, and get interviewed about you got impacted by COVID-19? Whilst i thought this is everyone right? I think everyone should be eligible for this program because we all affected. Or allow everyone who is paying unemployment insurance whether they have lost their Job, yet to be lost or didn't lose it also be beneficiaries to this. What good is the insurance if we can't use it these circumstances.

And in Canada:
“No one should have to worry about paying rent, buying groceries, or additional child care because of COVID-19. We will help Canadians financially,” Justin Trudeau said from the steps of his home in Ottawa, Friday.
Bout the paltry 10 000Yen back in 2009. I was a Student in a university in Tokyo that time, and i received it. But am not sure of the criteria they used to choose for the beneficiaries( For foreign residents)

1.I guess each person's career choice, and situation can be different. I have many friends enjoy being ALT's despite whatever we think. I have also friends who have found solace in being ALT because, other career opportunities are not coming by so easy. Remember we have VISAS to be renewed yearly, and without Job, i guess you can kiss Japan goodbye, and i repeat i know of thousands of foreigners on this Instructors VISA. So it will be ruthless to deem being an ALT a crazy option. Not all of us can be Drifters, You tubers, SNS influencers, Google, or Rakuten Workers. On the other side i know of Cities which pay 35man and above salaries, and improved packages on the verge of taking place. ( Summer & Winter bonuses & Transport). Working hours still being 8:15- 4pm Mon-Fri. Compare it to working in a normal Japanese company with long working hours, through weekends, the stress, and overly dependents on alcohol& smoking to survive through the weeks, months, and year. From the article i would like also to add another potential problem posed by Dispatch ALT companies which might be exacerbated by the current COVID-19 plague. Some ALT's working for ES or JHS, are Stopped from going to work, as soon the number of lessons they are supposed to do in a Year are done. That usually happens from Mid February- Mid March. Companies like interact, Borderlink etc do not pay for these no work days. So Most ALT's in this category depend on their savings, and hoping in 3 weeks time the new academic year starts( April) and then will start getting paid again. In this current Situation, if opening of Schools, regular allocation of English Classes is delayed, then that spells doom to the ALT's who fall in this category. The Dispatch companies definitely will not pay them, and the legal obligations on them for these people is blurred.

We just need to respectful to all human beings. So i feel sorry for her too, and her not being from Wuhan, and never been to Wuhan just shows how bizarrely ignorant these comments are too.

Coming from a culture were family and it's values are put first, and are highly valued. This idea of Sotsukon induces a feeling of emptiness and sadness. Seems marriage is a happiness Grinch in Japan.?

I think you need to watch the interview first, and then comment here. What caused the rants from the celebrity community was not the fact that she brought up this issue. Her questioning line kept pushing, and pushing as if she wasn't getting the answer she needed. Watch it if you haven't yet, and see if you wouldn't feel how petty she was being. i guess that's what annoyed the Doggy Dog and Co.

There are mixed situations here.
Voluntary casesPensioners who have blown their money through gambling and abuse of alcohol, or are not interested in paying taxes to the government. they sale their houses or any other property they have, and go live on the street.
For voluntary cases i was reading an article which explored the different reasons for homelessness in Japan, and it showed some people in the streets, choose to be there to experience poverty ( deliberate decision). Some want to know what poverty feels like, so that's why unsurprisingly you have homeless people, holding high brand smartphones, eating Burger King, and donning not so shabby clothes.( tell that to the homeless in Kibera Kenya).
Fact: Homelessness is not yet a problem in Japan as it is in the US or other parts of the world.
During the Rugby world cup 2019, i don't think they removed the homeless from their usual hotpots, because i continually saw them on the streets throughout the duration of the tournament. It is also the same time a homeless person in Taito Ward of Tokyo was denied shelter at an evacuation center after heavy rains brought by a typhoon.

Of course this a Tourist Burger. Their plan is to tap on tourists who are easily obsessed on this is so Japanese, that is so Japanese, this is Japanese culture (Olympics). Oh! Obama likes these Hamburgers. 4300Yen for a set lol. Then apply and be on a waiting list to eat a Hamburger with sea weed. lol.
But i am also curious about naming of the Hamburger which is derived from a suicide incident of the Daimyo Oba Nobunaga. Are they trying to celebrate suicide by recreating it in a Hamburger? With Suicides at rife in Japan each day, now is it a non sensitive issue as long it is bringing profits? What am i missing here?

It wasn’t until the late hours of June 30 that they managed to catch Satoki and 26-year-old Yuki while they were attempting to steal 88 items – including fishing gear, video games, and cash, and valued at about 62,400 yen – from a coffee shop in Honjo City.
Fishing gear & video games can now be bought from a Coffee Shop??
Honjo city coffee shops are the real deal lol!!!!

This male/female/Transgender and using of ablution facilities or public spaces is really a hypocrite of a scenario in Japan. Just as one person pointed out already, the cleaning ladies standing directly behind me in the public toilets waiting to clean or the ladies working at onsens who frequently enter the man's bathing space to change soap/ shampoo/ checking water temperature. Some ladies in the onsens do have lengthy conversations with customers who are stark naked in front of them, and life still continues, and no one really cares about it. Does it make it right/ wrong/ politically acceptable?

What about the long standing time during graduation ceremonies in public schools( My experience is with JHS public schools) Each year i witness students falling down, feeling sick, throwing up due to standing for a long time. I feel the whole graduation rituals need some serious revision, because there is some level of torture in that too.

@Yubaru: Oh I BET they will make MORE money during the Olympics, particularly with all the tourists who want to take their rides!
Definitely i agree with you on this one. They are going to be really overwhelmed with the number of tourists, and instead of being pessimistic they should be preparing for more customers, and also up their game on marketing their tours, and making more entertaining tours. During the Rugby world Cup i saw Bars & Restaurants being overwhelmed by the high number of customers, and they did not know what to do.( lack of preparation). Even less popular bars were packed to the bream. The British pub HUB started serving alcohol in paper cups because glasses ran out quickly which was really annoying, because i want to drink my 800yen ALE in a nice cold glass. They just need to get their heads out of their a***, and get ready to make some Big cash.

The Tokyo District Court on Tuesday approved prosecutors’ request to keep actress Erika Sawajiri detained for another 10 days. Sawajiri, 33, who was arrested on Nov 16 for allegedly possessing 0.09 of a gram of powder containing MDMA, will remain in detention until Dec 6.Police said Sawajiri has also admitted to using illegal drugs, such as marijuana, LSD and cocaine, for more than 10 years.Prosecutors said police are trying to identify the means through which she has been obtaining the drugs.
Seems to me the System was built to just do that, and doesn't discriminate at all.

It would have been interesting to get an opinion from these Celebrities after eating at Jiro Ono and a regular kaiten Zushi. It would be interesting to hear them make these comparisons. Most of us here haven't ate at Jiro Ono's, but definitely at a KaitenZ. That salmon Avocado/ spicy onion one from the kaiten Zushi places like Uobei etc are freakn delicious. So i might agree with people who talked about opinion and hype. A bottle of Jose Cuervo Tequilla costs 1800yen in a Supermarket, but the same bottle is 15000yen in a bar, just as a corona beer bottle is 200yen in store and 700yen at a bar. live within your means, do not be mislead. Eat the sushi which makes you happy :)! 100yen/40000!
