@JeffLee There is more to it than just filling Fujitsu's pockets. National pride plays a huge role and at a time like this, Japan needs anything to make it feel proud. You can go up to almost any Japanese you find and ask them if they've heard of the K supercomputer and they will answer with excitement 'Yes'. The other reason, Fujitsu now is the only left Japanese processor maker that can make chips competitive in performance to those made by American companies. Fujitsu creates engineering jobs in Japan and when it comes to national pride you have to go with chips made by a Japanese firm. It is not the most cost competitive option, but the jobs created by this project in Japan are worth it. Both NEC and Hitachi withdrew from the project citing costs, the Japanese government had to pay to keep Fujitsu involved. It is a big happy feel good project that will also create jobs. It is not sustainable, but for a while everyone is happy.

@JeffLee The supercomputer here @ University of Tsukuba is built by Appro using Intel and nVidia hardware. Much more cost competitive than Fujitsu's and has better dev tools, or so I've heard. I have no access to it, but I do have access to the servers and the majority run on Intel and nVidia hardware.

@ globalwatcher they need to cut the number of political divisions in Japan. Some of them are almost if they were created just to fill up job positions.

Posted in: Japan to double consumption tax to 10%, G20 action plan says See in context

Simple: I will buy less stuff. 10% is not too bad if the yen wasn't too damn high! A high yen is excellent for saving, which is what I'm doing and a higher consumption will encourage more people to save money pushing the yen's price even further up

I don't know about the average desktop, but the iPad 2 is equivalent to the Cray 2 supercomputer from 1985. The typical desktop is many times more powerful than the iPad.

Samsung owns the supply-chain and that's what Sony should do. Samsung is both vertically and horizontally integrated. I don't know why anyone is bringing up Apple? It is like bringing Microsoft to the argument, irrelevant. Sony should focus on competing with Samsung.

Posted in: Sony headed for fourth straight year in the red See in context

Does Apple Inc need to be jammed into every article. If Sony thinks its competitions is Apple they have already lost, just like when Apple thought IBM was its competition. Sony's competition is Samsung, Samsung is the company that is running away with all the money. Samsung and Sony have near identical product lines and Sony should focus on better competing with them. When Apple makes semiconductors, memory, TVs, feature phones, digital cameras, batteries and home appliances then maybe mentioning Apple would be relevant.

Posted in: Renesas mired in red on microchip sales drop See in context

This news isn't good at all. Renesas Electronics formed as a merger of Renesas Technology and NEC Electronics to cut costs and better compete globally, Japan Inc can't get a break. It is a shame really but Samsung is running with all the money.

Trivia: Renesas has a a fab somewhere along the Yamagata Shinkansen. Actually they have two in Yamagata.

@ CrazyJoe I wasn't replying to you. I was commenting on the story and BOJ intervention. I know what you mean by denominate, i.e. rebasing the currency. It doesn't matter or offer much value it will also confuse things. How are you going to pay for things that cost 59 yen when you rebase and it becomes 0.59 yen?
