@waxman:

How do you explain the contents of this paragraph??.....More or less all the industries are related to global economy my friend!

We are not friends. But, take a moment and read carefully. You are saying the same thing I am. I am just pointing out that this article is about Fujitsu. Thus, I did not talk about Europe or what you refer to as "global economy".

They really need to listen to us more. Why do they ignore our advice? It's insane.

Are you referring to your advice or "westerner's" advice? Because, for example, statistically the U.S. has on average approximately 1,000 heat stroke related deaths annually -according to the CDC website. So, this occurrence is not native to Japan.

If memory serves me right, I think I stopped buying any form of printed magazine/newspaper about 4years ago and went to free online sources -which includes many of the same magazines I used to buy. Now, I am free of the stupid inserts and numerous advertisement pages.

Seems kind of late for Newsweek to admit that a change is required to an antiquated delivery form.

considering how unsanitary Japanese pools are

I think pools in any country are unsanitary, not just Japan, that is why all pools are sanitized with (NOT Chlorine) but Trichloroisocyanuric acid.

China told Obama not to attack North Korea in 2010 after sinking the south Korean frigate and that indicated America is know-towing to Chinese leader commands!

Can you provide the link so I can read this story? Very curious as to where you got this info.

@YuriOtani

Japan has to be prevented from becoming addicted to Russian oil/gas at all costs!

I agree. Less dependance on oil, by any nation, would lead to a cleaner living. I would hope anyway.

@Dog

You, like a lot of the Japanese, have this mindset that Japan is essential for the world.

Don't make blanket statements. Back up your post with some sensible data or proof.

@wipeout

Well I'm starting to feel that the "green tea is a diuretic" camp don't have much to back up their words with.

There are several types of diuretics. The most prominent is called "High ceiling loop diuretic", but there a few other types. As for green tea, it falls in the "Osmotic diuretics" group which (if consumed in large quantities) the caffeine can cause vasoconstriction, thus leading to a diuretic effect from increasing bradycardia. However, the key word is quantity.

Of course, I am not privy to the medical records of any of the hospitalized patients, but I am pretty certain some were not classic heatstroke patients -and rather were struck by heat-exhaustion, which is a different type of medical condition.

These types of social stigmas are not limited to Japan. While not exactly the same, It reminds me of a similar western word "spinster" (aka: old maid). Some more recent ways we still hold such views: Bridget Jones' Diary (film).

Posted in: U.S. faces dilemma in South China Sea response See in context

There are Chinese "records of these small rocks in Chinese navigation documents as far back as the 15th century. Japan's legal claim on the islands dates to 1895 (though some documents say it was earlier), when Taiwan and its surrounding islets were ceded to Japan at the end of the Sino-Japanese War. Tokyo formally incorporated them into Japanese territory shortly afterward. After World War II, however, Japan ceded Taiwan and the Paracels (see below) back to China. And because Diaoyu was traditionally part of Taiwanese territory, the government in Taipei believes it has claim to the islands. Complicating matters further, because Beijing views Taiwan as part of Chinese territory, it also claims the islands. However, in 1970, the United States and Japan signed a treaty reverting occupied Okinawa back to Japanese control which, unlike the treaty signed after World War II, explicitly mentioned Senkaku as Japanese territory. Japan cites this bilateral agreement as legal backing for its claim." -FP

This situation may not have a definite end in sight during my lifetime. But, I feel (and hope) that a military response may/will not happen.

White, natural skin has long been thought beautiful for Asian women, and Japanese men have also become increasingly skin-conscious in recent years.

Maybe Edwin O. Reischauer had it wrong. He once wrote that it was more of a subconscious decision not to have dark skin, which would reflect a lower caste person, whereby light-skin would signify a higher status. But admittedly, the humidity here in Japan, during the summer, is unbearable.

Posted in: How to deal with a student sleeping in class See in context

Our curriculum at a university in Tokyo requires us to have at least 15 minutes of silent reading every class. As such, it should not be surprising that often students will open their books during this 15 minutes, place them on their desks and fall asleep..... I do my best to seduce them to actually stay awake and read, baby, read.

Darn right. I would fall asleep from boredom and not from karaoke, commute length, part-time work, or any other reason as this writer mentioned. The ludicrous mandate of a syllabus should never restraint a true professional from having a successful classroom environment.

Normally I just let them enjoy their naps and make a note of who sleeps.... Then I ended the boring reading session by telling everyone to put their books away and wake up.

This is where you have laid the groundwork for your own boring nature. Honestly, you failed as a teacher to take the one opportunity during the commencement of your term to set the ground rules and make your presence be heard. By submitting to your own inability you created the atmosphere in which you now agonize in.

So while he was sleeping, I took his watch from him and I put it on my wrist.

Show humility in your actions, by resorting to childish acts of thievery you further tarnish your reputation. You may think it funny as some students laugh, but you do not hear what students really think of you. Do you?

I sat through long lectures at my undergraduate course, and disliked most styles of teaching. It wasn't until I entered graduate school that I discovered that there wer alternatives to "lecturing" to or at students. And, the time of the courses were never important, as they were 8hrs in length on weekends. Never, did a student fall asleep. You must admit that you need some soul-searching as to your shortcomings.

Posted in: Fujitsu's 1st-quarter loss widens See in context

Fujitsu, like many Japanese exporters, blamed much of its loss on a surging yen, which makes products more expensive overseas while shrinking the relative value of foreign-earned income.

Fujitsu, among other domestic electronic giants in Japan must stop feeling ** saudade

Why are General Motors and Volkswagen more successful in China than Honda and Toyota? Why are LG and Samsung bigger in India than Panasonic and Sony? Why is IBM larger in Japan than Fujitsu is in the United States?

These should be the reasons and questions that Japan, Inc. should ask itself. Survival for many Japanese companies may depend on their ability to greatly increase overseas revenues and profits, given demographic and economic trends that suggest slower or stagnant growth in the home market.

Building a true globalized company will require many Japanese executives to think in new and unfamiliar ways about organization, marketing, and strategy. The approaches that proved successful in the past have outlived their usefulness.

While many firms exclaim they are global they are missing the true meaning. Complacency has deep roots and without change we are bound to read more stories like this. But there seems to be a lack of urgency.

Yuri only looks at white-washed textbooks, not real history, hence some of her confusion. You could also point out her hatred of the US presence and constant appeals for their defense in the same thread

@smithinjapan: If you any sense of fairness. Allow YuriOtani to have his/her opinion. I do not think your statement adds much more than an attempt at insulting an opinion.

Yuri DAILY demands the US forces leave Okinawa, and then when it comes to issues with China demands their defense. If there is any statement more true of a typical Japanese politician and their hypocrisy and outright foolishness I say it's this.

What is hypocritical or foolish as to warrant the wish to be free of a foreign power inside one's own homeland? Can you justify an apposing view? I'd like to hear it.

TEPCO said journalists will be permitted to take notes, but audio and video recordings will be strictly forbidden. The utility has so far ignored calls from journalists for it to make the footage available on DVD so that it can be viewed at any time.

Tragic & shamefully. Very unfortunate that TEPCO has decided to take this position. Here is a chance for TEPCO to renew lost confidence and they choose to smear it with disgrace.

@Yubaru:

Chase does mean; to pursue in order to seize, overtake, thus the implication is that he was attempting to flee, otherwise it would be worded differently.

You specifically chose the VERB form of the word "chase", the NOUN form is "An act of pursuing someone or something." Hence, it DOES NOT indicate he was attempting to flee. That is your interpretation.

Really?!! I think you are misinformed. Do you have any clue as to which country has truly transformed "TQL and stuff"? TQL by the way... is a military term, I think you meant TQM or rather Quality Assurance.

The only issue is whether management can swallow its pride and treat young employees as equals

While the "western" view of 'How we do it is better' might be Japan's answer, I would not expect it to come in a form we think it should be. I am leaning more towards a hybrid form of management applications whereby recruits are utilized more wisely. But, in my opinion it has to begin with the festering education received in Japanese universities, where from my experience, diplomas are nothing more than a ticket-stub reflecting 2~4 years of summer break before entering the corporate world. Entering a company means being re-educated to fit the mold and ignoring most if not all of the lectures received at university. This is a necessary step, going to the root-cause, to make true change.
