Primary reason is to show a good face to India and Japan, China is very sensitive to being perceived in bad light by foreign media. Second is to build up the ability of their own navy. It's one thing to build ships and submarines, it is another entirely to have the actual know-how of global navy deployments far away from home.

As the article said, this will not in any way change China's policy in territorial disputes with Japan, India, and other Asian nations.

and yes, the US Navy should be doing more to help not only itself but all innocent ships out there

The US Navy already patrols and has patrolled those waters for quite some time. The US Navy already operates with multinational forces, especially European naval task forces, in that region. And yes, the US Navy has aided non-US ships already, seems you've missed those news when it benefits your image of the United States.

it was a "tragedy" for U.S. politics that the country’s foreign relations were being sucked in to the domestic presidential election

But the US President is the chief foreign relations diplomat of the US. The executive office is in charge of foreign relations. It's their place to discuss where they stand on foreign issues.

Also, why do they say "domestic Presidential election" ? Is there any other kind of US Presidential election? Are they implying that the US President only deals with domestic matters?

I think it's a rather cool aircraft, but the Osprey's safety record has been anything but cool.

As dangerous as a half-completed Death Star?

Did you even watch Return of the Jedi? The half-completed Death Star was fully operational!

Don't be so selfish, Japan. These US navy ships being moved are not only there for you. They are also there for the little guys in south east asia who need a counterbalance to China in the region. Have you seen China's claims in the south China sea? They're outrageous.

The FIVB, and the Japan Volleyball Association, are not exactly welcoming to the world press. At a sold-out U.S.-Japan women's match in Tokyo last November, only a Canadian writer and an Italian photographer, both hired by FIVB, were seen working among almost 100 Japanese media.

Though Americans invented volleyball in 1895, U.S. media were denied accreditation.

That's very mean. :(

You seem to be implying that Japan exports absolutely nothing and that all of their industries depend on extreme protectionism to keep them alive. You also seem to be implying that Japanese culture is an endangered species.

These assumptions of yours could not be further from the truth. I will not even bother to give every little example, I am sure everyone on this website is well aware about Japan's exporting prowess, both in manufactured goods and culture.

No taxation without representation...

It is my understanding that the Okinawans are already represented in the Japanese government as required by their constitution.

long after the flight occurred seems miniscule at best

When decoys are involved, you generally want that information to be classified. In this case, it's not minuscule "at best".

Even more reprehensible was the fact that he was able to take pictures in the first place. The operation was compromised last year, not last week; the moment he took the pictures.

If China claims that carriers are purely for defensive purposes, does that not mean that Japan can now build its own aircraft carrier within the limitations of "defense only" for the Japanese Defense Forces by using the Chinese definition?

The Japanese yucked it up when Top Gear was insulting Korean cars, but call it "Japan bashing" when anybody says anything remotely disparaging about something that just so happens to be Japanese.

In Top Gear, everybody gets their turn in the hot seat. American cars get bashed more than any other country in the show, we don't get bent out of shape. In fact, of all the countries, Japan is probably the most praised on Top Gear by far. Japanese viewers must've gotten spoiled by this.
