From an Australian article regarding the location he was held:

But nothing compared to the nightmare of being locked up for a month in the cells at Azabu Police station in Roppongi, a district in Tokyo known for its nightlife entertainment where the fallen NRL star found trouble.

It's not a scam to buy and on-sell (unless doing it domestically, in which case the govt may feel they are being scammed out of consumption tax...

Many international students in Aus buy up on certain products at supermarkets (not duty free tho) and send over to buyers in China. It hits the news occasionally when they keep clearing out the shelves of baby formula.

Posted in: Kishida reelected prime minister in Diet vote See in context

Suga resigned after only a year in office as his popularity plunged over criticism of his handling of the coronavirus pandemic and his insistence on holding the Tokyo Olympics despite concerns of a virus surge.

No no no, he resigned because he was too tired to go through an election whilst battling the pandemic. Right?? ...

Posted in: Heat risks add to challenges for Tokyo's pandemic-hit Olympics See in context

The last time it hosted the Games, in 1964, the event was shifted to October to beat the heat.

This was also discussed but dismissed at the time of last year's postponement. They'd be regretting that now. Must had been some strong leaders back in the 60's.

Thursday's data showed China has 105.7 million men and boys for every 100 women and girls, or about 33 million more males.

Surely the first "million" is an error

Posted in: A sobering strategy for pandemic times - brewers bank on alcohol-free beer boom See in context

I'd like to see more low alcohol options rather than alcohol free. The article shows low alcohol accounts for 20% of sales in Australia, and I'm sure it would take off with the red-face clientele here. Non-alc is getting surprisingly good though, enjoyed one over lunch on the weekend as I was bike touring (wouldn't have hesitated to have a regular in Aus but different rules apply).

Posted in: Ethics scandal involving communications official linked to Suga widens See in context

The heads of many Japanese corporations (including the one I work for) come directly from a government position in the same industry. Naturally they will continue their relationship with the government officials. This benefits the company as they gain influential power and greys the border between government and industry.

Yes, Japan has a new women's soccer league, it will be interesting to see if she supports that also.

All the best in Aus, Naomi.

As Bach said, the IOC is in the business of "organizing the games, not cancelling the games". They are the ones to consult for a serious discussion about whether it should go ahead.

Posted in: Tokyo apartment prices rise to near bubble-era high in 2020 See in context

5 years ago I also pondered land Vs apartment. Apartment values have been steadily increasing for a number of years (prices of the only tower mansion in my area were higher than when it was first built 15 years earlier) but land was steady or dropping. We figured land has more growth potential so went that route.

Buying an older property in my area was difficult as people don't tend to sell until it becomes a pushover job, and we ended up paying the budget and buying new so miss out on being able to create value through renovation but no regrets. Having outdoor space has given me no end of DIY opportunity.

Hokkaidoboy, that's very big of you.

I'm not surprised that a person of his age who thinks he has never met a gay person would not understand them. I also think senior government officials should be replaced by people with values of the modern era.

If there is one positive we can take from this, it's the very big reaction from LGBT and allies alike. It is a changing country.

The driver day the lady then hit the brakes.

In this day and age, I would have thought that sensors at a station would detect someone on the tracks and engage the brakes of all approaching trains.

Too early to start a promotion anyway. Should be done after the initial wave of people who want to travel at any cost. This promotion could result in a deep slump after summer, at a time stimulus will be needed more than ever.
