It is not going to be easy and Putin is honest. Japan unfortunately lost the best time window many years ago to resolve the issue. Russia is going up while Japan is going down, another unfortunate.

NK problem has to be resolved based on mutual respects, and mutual trusts, no other ways. Recommend Abe to reduce rhetoric statements and preconditions for talks and deals.

It would be historical if Abe could cut the deal.

Posted in: Abe aims for constitution change in bid for extended term See in context

Abe needs to prioritize his plans. He promised so many things, that is not a good sign. The No 1 priority is natural disaster prevention. It is imminent and real. It seems that Japan is entering active period of disasters, based on the past a few years experiences. Coupled with Olympics 2020, it is time to spend money on infrastructure, transportation, water, hospitals, and to make sure that in the next 10 years, Japanese people can stand up against any record breaking disasters. Japan must be smart again, no other choices.

cucashopboy, the govt has wrong priorities, wrong threats, wrong budgets, that is why it is blamable. If the govt promoted natural disasters as major threats to Japan and to the people, every days, in the news, on TV, in policy speeches, at UN, and increase the budget each and every year in historical record to deal with the threats, then perhaps, Japanese people would take the disaster warning more seriously. How much does it cost to fix Heimburger's 372 highly dangerous zones ? Probably is less than to fix NK nuclear strikes. Now it turns out that there will never be a strike.

kohakuebisu, you have revealed an important information that couple of years already the weather shows a pattern of record extreme. I predict that next couple of years will likely reach or break records. I also predict that the govt knows it but doesn't want people know it. I am no scientist but a believer of Markov process. In the article, "Heimburger notes there are 372 zones designated as "highly dangerous", where buildings could collapse or burst into flame during a major earthquake". Obviously, the govt decided to do nothing.

Never wrong to ask. However it is a sensitive issue. The better approach is to establish a working team jointly to make sure that they are not only scientifically safe but also human safe.

The good thing is stability. But I want Abe to be humble: even if you get 100% support from LDP, it is still minority of the nation. So, keep your head down and lock your gun and don't shoot.

Posted in: Japan resilient, but climate change making disasters worse: experts See in context

Shame to the expert. All these disasters were predictable based on current technologies. Yet, the expert blame on people, not on the failed system: the Abe govt. If you run a simulation on a model, if you predicted that the death rate will be high, then you, the govt, has to issue order to evacuate, no excuses.

Another missed opportunity by Abe, and every opportunity counts. NK is the last diplomatic battle that Japan has to face and Japan can't afford to fail. Fortunately, Japan isn't alone, and can launch an initiative through trilateral forum of Japan-SK-China. Unfortunately, Japan-SK-China golden triangle isn't going too far since Abe taking control 5 years ago. Time to change and time to say good bye to "threats from neighbors".

The goal is clear: a united states of Northeast Asia. to get there, Japan should start with something easy to do, expected from both sides. Being No3 in the world, Japan still has some privileges. Sooner is better before it is too late when Japan would be No 3 no more.

hattorikun, what is the increase of govt budget for prevention of disasters ? What if there will be another earthquake next year ? Is Japan ready for it ? Is monitoring system in place ? What is the early warning ? What about another heatwave ? Are all schools air conditioned ? What about another virus outbreak ? Are all hospitals equipped with tools they need ? What is next year prediction ? Good year ? Bad year ? Worse year ? How much money needed to keep Japanese people safe and happy in case of any major disasters ? Has it ever occurred to Abe that the major threat Japan faces since the end of war is from heaven, not from neighbors ? If you can't answer the above questions in quantitative ways, then Japan is not ready.

Indeed, the reduced characters of samurais are unfortunate. In fact, samurai is originated from China and deeply linked to Confucianism. Samurais are by no means violent and killing only. I hope Japanese artists and Chinese artists can joint hands to produce more movies based on common history to change the distorted image that between Japan and China there is only feud.

Posted in: Japan's deadly summer: Floods, typhoons, earthquakes, heat See in context

Unfortunately, Japan isn't the best place to live in. Japan must look for a place in mainland as diversity. In 1930s, Japan had a program to move 1 million Japanese to Northeast China. At the end of war, hundreds of thousands Japanese children and women were left in Northeast China too. At one point of history, Japan planned to move capital from Tokyo to Changchun, a city in Northeast China. However, in the past 75 years, Japan fails in securing a place in Northeast China as a diversity place. In contrast, Koreans have more influence and freedom to live and move around in China. It is time to have a long term thinking, it is time to return back to mainland, and it is time to rebuild Northeast China. In trust and in love, one Northeast Asia, one united culture, and one united people.

Japan has no strategic vision, that is the biggest problem. When Japan needs stand up, she kneels down. When Japan needs to be friendly, she is hostile. When Japan needs to cut cost, she waste more. When Japan needs to be generous, she is stingy.

For the past five years, Abe declared that China is a threat and so imminent that he has to pursue collective defense and invoke article 5 to protect Japanese people. Japan has to make a strategic decision soon: to be friendly with China, or not. With or without Japan, China will move forward. Japan isn't Chinese target, and China will not occupy Japan, unless Japan asks China to do so. The world is changing, rapidly. The best way to deal with it is to adapt to it.
