The things rich people waste their cash on.

Most of us want to wear shoes, but I guess going barefoot is an alternative for some.

Posted in: Woman dies from brain hemorrhage days after receiving coronavirus vaccine, but link uncertain See in context

For people who believe there is a link between the vaccination and the brain hemorrhage and this woman's death, how long does this link last? Three days? A month? A year? Five years?

Even if a link were found, it would be isolated and rare. Many foods we eat cause illness and death, yet most of us continue to enjoy them. Peanuts kill some people, yet we eat them. Vaccines kill far far fewer people, so why panic and avoid them? Vaccines have saved millions of lives. We were all vaccinated as children, and here we are.

Will all deaths be linked to vaccines now? If someone has a heart attack, did the vaccine cause it? If someone gets cancer, did the vaccine cause it? If someone simply dies in their sleep, did the vaccine cause it?

Vaccines do not guarantee immortality. They just prevent infections and disease.

Posted in: Man killed after leaping from platform into oncoming train in Kobe See in context

Some commentators here seem to feel that suicidal people should be more considerate and not jump in front of trains, and should go find a nice tree out in the woods instead.

Suicidal people are in extreme mental distress. They are not thinking normally. They are about to take their own life after all. If this man couldn't think to go to a hospital to seek help, he's certainly not going to be rational about his suicide method.

That day a person in terrible mental anguish couldn't live anymore for some reason that we cannot fathom. Unfortunately, he involved and badly affected others with is method. If he were mentally healthy, he would not have.

In some countries, pharmacists are able to give shots to the public. I wonder if Japan could get around the shortage of nurses and doctors by enlisting pharmacists as part of the vaccination campaign?

Nice social distancing again in that photo.

If there is 1 meter of snow on your neighbours garage, they probably need to clear that, then clear it again when it hits the ground.

People don't need to clear their garages. In the Hokuriku region most newer garages are reinforced for heavy snow. When I bought a shed it was rated for up to 2 metres of snow. Garages are similar. YKK AP, a garage maker, is from Toyama. The garages are snow and wind speed rated.

My neighbourhood has over one metre of snow. Digging out the car took two hours today. I envied my garage owning neighbours. My wife went shopping around 3pm and the supermarket was out of most daily groceries. Fun times in yukiguni.

Posted in: Coronavirus third wave puts many Japanese hospitals on overload See in context

Misleading headlines are unhelpful. The medical system here in Japan isn't overloaded or about to collapse. Hospitals not designated as a COVID facility are fine. My wife works in a large hospital that isn't designated to take COVID patients and everything is running as usual.

Meanwhile, 77 percent of the 4,000 available hospital beds for coronavirus cases in the capital had been filled as of Jan 6

That line tells you what you need to know. 4000 beds are not all of the beds in Tokyo, but the beds set aside for coronavirus patients.

Posted in: Tom Cruise rants at 'Mission: Impossible' crew in London over COVID safety See in context

It's disturbing how many people here think it's fine to yell at, berate and bully employees. Mr Cruise has problems if that's how he deals with people he's unhappy with. He's not worried about people's houses or their health. He's worried about his movie and his ego. In August, Mr Cruise saw Tenet in London at the cinema and the social distancing in the video coverage looked pretty minimal. You can find it on YouTube.

I was lying in bed still awake. The TV was on in the living room and I heard the news announce that John Lennon had been shot. My mother gasped from the kitchen and ran past my room to the living room. She was shocked and upset. I still remember that evening at home clearly.

Biden has lost. He has no path to victory at all. Trump has solid leads in Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Georgia. Trump is leading in North Carolina, too. Biden has simply run of states to cross the 270 line. I want Biden to win, but I see no way for him too.

Posted in: Suicide leading cause of death among young people in Japan, statistics show See in context

Of course suicide is going to be one of the leading causes of death among the young, along with car crashes. Young people don't drop dead from heart attacks or strokes nearly as often as older people, nor do they succumb to cancer, dementia and other diseases at the rate older people do. When you eliminate those causes of death, there are not many other causes of death for young people other than suicide or accidents. What are the young dying from in other developed countries? Accidents and disease? Japan sounds pretty safe for young people then. That said, let's hope we can reduce the number of suicides.

Is this a job in Japan? In America, it's simply a license to sign certain things but it isn't a job. I'm a notary public and so are many lawyers, accountants, secretaries, bankers, accountants, and everyday people.

Yes, it's a job. In some places outside Japan, for example, in Louisiana in the USA and in British Columbia, Canada, notary publics are their own profession with significant responsibilities and legal powers.

The chance that this will have any effect at all is infinitesimally small. If I have to show ID and explain why I'm buying gasoline I'm going to a different gasoline stand.
