Posted in: 3-year-old girl starves to death after mother leaves country See in context

We don't allow 14 year olds to babysit small children for weeks at a time, Cooking for them , cleaning & bathing them there is a vast difference between that and a few hours while we go to dinner . As for irresponsible parenting, there is something very wrong here, Phillipino women living abroad are responsible for a very large % of money being sent to the Phillipines, They sacrifice themselves in different ways in nearly every country in the world. A lot of the money they earn is sent to their families in the Phillipines. Besides the obvious that it is very wrong to leave TWO children alone while she goes overseas , something is very wrong. As for 14 year olds working , they are usually supervised and work for short periods of time.

Not sure what the difference between shelling and bombing is, But Japan was bombed heavily by US forces during WWII , The fire bombings of Tokyo , First ever experimental use of Napalm, killed more people than Nagasaki and Hiroshima put together. There were countless cities that were bombed, Osaka Castle was almost totally destroyed.

Now we are getting somewhere, In the end Japan will finish whaling for the same reason that the USA and Australia did, not to save the whale for economic reasons.

What is it that you actually mean?

You want the budget in a hurry presumably to purchase more jets and you want the jets in the air waiting for the Chinese, but you don't want a war and you don't know what scrambling jets means..

Its my opinion and only my opinion that everyone should have a look at both the Hiroshima and Nagasaki war museums or peace parks as they are referred to, whatever you think you believe now might be brought into question after seeing first hand. I was brought up believing that it was necessary to stop the war and possibly it was , after all it was the last war the Americans ever brought to a succesful conclusion. There is no doubt that besides their motives for stopping the war and saving a lot ( no-one really knows how many ) after all the Japanese were starving and had by all accounts lost ) of American lives, they also used it as a testing ground, there were a few different cities that they had back up plans for, but unfortunately for both Nagasaki and Hiroshima the weather was against them that day.

Scrambling jets does not imply that they do not have many jets at their disposal and that they need more, It implies that they have jets on standy or alert ready to take off as quickly as possible in the case of a threat, Scramble means to get them airborne as quickly as possible. Imagine what would happen to all the US bases around the world if they didn't come to Japan's aid in the event of a hostile move from China. Must be awkward for the US on the edge of a fiscal cliff with two out of the three largest holders of US debt.

Interesting you say these women are rotten to the core because they cheat, and yet you admitted cheating, are you still rotten to the core or are you better? If you are better maybe they too will one day realize the errors of their ways.

See a lot of people hating without knowing too many facts, and I would be happy to put money on it that its fairly widespread in every country. we are after all animals.

One of the main causes of deaths by gun in the USA is by mentally ill according to the NRA and If 1 in 17 Americans are mentally ill then not only should you have psycological profiles done on all present and prospective gun owners, but also people in a position of power who represent the NRA or the Government. Stop persecuting law abiding gun owners is his rant, a far as I am aware all these guns that have been purchased for use in the mass killings are purchased legally, Therefore by definition the rules and the laws must be changed.

You should try living in Australia and then you will be able to really complain about lack of choice,

After 9pm , think I might have a burger or a pizza, your choice is limited to either Macdonalds or Hungry Jacks ( Burger King ) or Pizza Hut , Dominos or one of a few other chain pizza delivery places , you may luck out and get a late KFC for whatever they have left from the day.

I grew up in a time where corporal punishment was not only normal in School life it was accepted and had the backing of the parents, but we were not bullied by the coaches for not playing well, not physically anyway, maybe some light banter or teasing which was actually a good release so that people didn't take it too seriously. We were caned for smoking or other breaches of discipline, which whether you agree with it or not was the form of discipline , in other words you knew if you did something wrong and got caught you were caned. The reason that corporal punishment was banned in Japan to the best of my memory was because too many students were being killed by having gates closed on them for tardy behaviour, it was a semi-regular occurence at one time in Japan.

Actually I think its worse than that, its not respect that he is showing him, it is the Sempai Kohai way, the Sensei Seito way , he is treating him the way he always did and by doing this he attempts to influence the readers to think he was a young misunderstood person, someone who made a mistake and deserves pity if not sympathy.

A friend of mine's daughter got slapped by her teacher, so he took his daughter to the teacher's house that night and made him apologize to her and promise never to do it again. Yes he intimidated ( bullied ) the teacher into doing it and yes it worked , his daughter never had to put up with either physical or psycological bullying from that teacher or any other in that school ever again. Also she now has come to the aid of many a bullied student. I was shocked at the time, but it has worked out for so many others because of his actions.

But it has got plenty of media attention hasn't it ?

I am a law abiding citizen, I pay taxes , don't speed , don't drink drive, Don't hurt people , Ask that my Children do the same and expect the same from my friends, I believe that the law is there for a reason and I for the most part respect and believe in it. I am not a gun carrying cowboy, do not believe in the rights to bear arms to protect myself , at least not in the society in which I live , which I also consider to be civilized. I understand the need not to sink to the levels of a murderer who has been caught , tried and put onto death row and I appreciate both arguments for and against showing them any kind of mercy whatsoever. I understand the reason why we don't allow the victims family to decide the prisoners fate as well, because my chosen punishment would be far worse than not allowing them to know the time of their demise.

Living in Australia now is the opposite to what Japan was in the late 80s, you could make good money there but it was expensive, The difference is although you get paid well now in Australia you taxed heavily.

Unemployment rates are almost the same now in both countries, Japan doing well considering they have had over two decades of negative growth. Australia also not bad considering the amount of handouts easily given.

Posted in: Why are Japanese so bad at English? See in context

I have met plenty of Japanese people in Australia and America and they all spoke English quite well, although strangely enough some of the new arrivals didn't speak that well?? I also have some friends that speak English very well who live back in Japan now, but spent a couple of years overseas when they were younger. I even have a couple of friends who speak extremely well considering they have only ever lived in Japan and studied at School there with a couple of years at an English School. I have some foreign friends who have lived in Japan for 10 or more years and can understand Japanese very well, but can't put a sentence together other than to order a beer. As far as I know my whole French class from School has not produced one French speaker, but a couple that speak Japanese after living there for years and one that speaks Chinese after living there for years.

Its easier to learn a different language living in that country, but its not impossible, Not everyone is the same either.

And yet there is that proud feudal Japanese tradition of disemboweling oneself in protest to preserve one's "honor." It's only honorable if a Japanese does it? Savages.

Do you really need the difference between what the Samurai used to do and what this protestor did explained in detail?

Hundreds of years of tradition , committed in the name of honour knowing death was not only inescapable it was the intended destination Vs an attempt at attention getting.

I'm irritated by "less" being used instead of "fewer", as in "this checkout for 8 items or less". You can't have half an item, so it should be "fewer".

You actually can have half an item if you halve it....

letsberealistic

I simply asked a question, I speak only for myself ,unlike quite a few posters here who seem to have inside knowledge, would rather not know my confirmed date of execution if I was on death row.

I don't claim to know what the prisoners on death row are thinking other than being guided by the article itself, and I am cynical enough to argue that not all would actually want to know.

We are supposed to believe that all should be forgiven once they have been caught arrested and sentenced and that we should make their passing as humane as possible because we are civilized.

It appears to me that you have more sympathy for convicted murderers than for posters here who disagree with your opinion.

I would have thought that it more cruel to give them and their loved ones a date , for them to know a week , a month or even longer in advance and count down the days, after all they are imprisoned , they can't go and take a last walk along the beach with their pet dog, or go for a coffee and cake with their wife or girlfriend, throw a ball in the park with their children. All they can do is sit in their jail cell and contemplate what they have done and what will happen to them. They could hope that the teachings of Buddha are correct and they will be reincarnated at least giving them a chance to redeem themselves and their previous actions, however if karma is also correct they may still have some punishment awaiting them in their next lives.

They are bullying him because he is different and thats all, good for him to stand up to them, but you could help, when we lived in Japan one of the kids at my son's school was picking on him, I let all the kids know that I wanted to know where the boy was, the school even rang me to find out why I wanted to see him, I told them if he stops bullying my son I have no reason to see him. He stopped and that was that. I would never have hurt him because he was still a child, but he didn't know that and the other kids never knew that either. These poor kids all over the world who take their own lives miss out on the rest of their lives, it is one of the worst crimes of society.

Guns may not be the whole problem here, but take them away and at least reduce the problem, Isn't saving a few 6 year olds every year worth it? or are your priorities that different ? How about staring with making an amendment to the constitution. Then you law abiding gun owners will have no choice.
