Posted in: Two children, aged 4, 2, die in apartment fire See in context

I love how they announced that the 4 year old boy had recently been interested in lighters in their statement like it was just another case of "boys will be boys".

Putting the issue of the two children being left at home alone aside, he was 4 years old and there is absolutely no reason for him to have ever held a lighter in his hand once, let alone enough times to figure out how to operate it and become "interested" in it. I hope both the parents are charged with criminal negligence resulting in death and that child services takes their other children away.

Ate at Wolfgang's in Hawaii over Christmas with my wife and her family. They are from Kobe so we eat a lot of Kobe beef and it takes a lot to impress when it comes to beef. The dry aged t-bone steak blew us all away. Sure it comes at a steep price, but I would highly recommend this restaurant to all meat lovers.

Posted in: Although Japan's Juvenile Law prohibits media from publishing the names and photos of minors arrested for crimes, people have been using social media to circulate the names, photos, addresses and tele See in context

I agree with cleo - if they have been found guilty of the crime then I see no problem with them showing their photos and names as they do with adult criminals. Murder victims who are underage always have their names and pictures shown all over the news, and they did nothing wrong. Why do those that actually commit the crime get granted the privacy their victims are not awarded?

Posted in: 6-year-old boy goes missing in Toyonaka See in context

I go to a special needs school that covers elementary through high school about once a week for work. There is absolutely no way that they would allow a student to be alone by themselves for 10 minutes. Most of the time we have 1 teacher/guardian per 2 students in the class. Not only should this child not have been left alone for 10 minutes by himself, if there was only one adult supervising and they absolutely needed to leave the classroom to go to the washroom (10 minutes seems a bit much), then they should at least have a way to lock the door from the outside of the classroom. I hope this teacher is held fully responsible for the disappearance and that the child is found soon.

Posted in: Japan’s poster for Academy Award-winning movie 'Birdman' raises eyebrows online See in context

Can't wait for the follow up article filled with complaints from movie goers who decided to see the movie based on the poster and awards recognition alone without bothering to look up the plot synopsis. Hell, I knew what the movie was about before watching it and was still disappointed with it. Guess I'm one of the few out there who wasn't impressed by endless hallway scenes and a drum only soundtrack. I really doubt that this movie will do well in Japan.

They say they are protesting alleged “special privileges” given to ethnic Koreans, and say Japan’s welfare system is abused by Korean residents.

many are descendants of forced laborers shipped to Japan during its 1910-1945 colonial rule of Korea.

Maybe these people should be protesting against those who forced these Koreans' ancestors into slavery instead of the Koreans who have little to no choice of being in Japan.

How could these fools possibly think that they would be able to get away with having that many animals in their suitcases? I'd assume that smuggling 1 capybara would be easily caught on an x-ray, let alone 4.

I really don't understand how any Canadians or Americans would not know July 1st or 4th respectively. While I'm not sure of the amount of Americans who know about Canada Day, I'm pretty sure that at least 90% of Canadians know of Independence Day.

It's not really an edible wearable with all that circuitry in it now is it? Couldn't they just make a small wrist strap that displayed that information and have the banana separate? If this was in the US I'm sure someone would try eating the circuitry and then suing for false advertising.

Posted in: Japan turns to 'I am Kenji' Facebook page on hostage crisis See in context

Can't agree more Strangerland. Talk about piggybacking on an important issue without even having the creativity to create their own slogan.

The attack in France was an attack on freedom of speech in a Western nation. It threatens all of us. How many of us are irresponsibly running off to dangerous war zones leaving our wife and children behind? In the released video he says he wants to see his children - well maybe he should have thought about that earlier. I'm not against journalists going to these areas, it is obviously necessary to get the information out, but I can't understand why someone who is married with children would do it. These children will most likely not get to have their father around growing up. Why? Because he wanted to play with fire to chase fame and adrenaline.

I am NOT Kenji and neither are any of these people posting these photos on social media.

Posted in: Prosecutors seek 7-year jail term for man who slashed two AKB48 singers See in context

I have no problem with them giving this man a 7 year sentence, but do the people who are making these sentences really feel that what he did was worse than these parents who murder their children and get off with a 2 year suspended sentence? If attempted murder can score you 7 years, how is it that actual murder scores you far less? Oh that's right, murdering one's own defenseless children is akin to taking out the trash here and they are nowhere near as important as idols...

Microsoft is so intent on distancing Windows 10 from its predecessors that it skipped directly from Windows 8, which failed to deliver on its promise as a platform for a variety of devices.

Try reading the article next time Mr. Perfect.

These goggles are seeming to fall in between Google Glass and Oculus Rift, which certainly has potential. But those things look ridiculous in their current stage. Here's hoping they can refine that into something better looking.

Posted in: Mystery in Shinjuku as woman plunges to death from restroom See in context

This door was also slightly different in that its bottom edge was a clear 35 cm from the restroom floor and had a “safety bar” installed at around waist height.

I can understand being to drunk to remember stepping down 35cm into a bathroom when you came in, but this does not explain the safety bar. Why is it written in quotes here? Was it some tiny flimsy bar that wasn't secured to both sides of the wall? Also at 4:30am it should have been pretty cold outside. You'd think she would feel the gust of cold air....or perhaps notice that the scenery outside looked absolutely nothing like the inside of an izakaya. Quite a mystery how she fell indeed.

Posted in: Gov't to start interim storage of nuclear waste in March See in context

people already displaced have seen it as unacceptable because it would in effect finalise the abandonment of their communities.

Well, where exactly would they have suggested the waste be stored? In a different area resulting in other people being displaced? It is too bad that they can't return to their communities, but did they really think that it was going to be possible in the near future, nuclear waste or not? I think it is far more noble to surrender their already contaminated land instead of holding on to pipe dreams.

Posted in: U.S. hit film musical 'Into the Woods' begins global push See in context

Watched this with my life last night and while it wasn't flat out bad, it was far from being good either. I've never seen the musical before, but apparently they changed a decent amount of stuff in the second half of the film which took away from character/plot development. The plot is quite simple, but the content is not specifically aimed at children (infidelity, murder, etc.) so it is hard to figure out what target audience they had in mind when they made it. I wouldn't suggest going out of your way to see it in theaters - felt more like a made for tv movie.

Maybe when I stop getting corn in my caesar salad or clam chowder on my pizza I will consider siding with the author of this clickbait. Is washoku the only food in the world being bastardized overseas? Maybe there is a reason why "true" washoku isn't popular overseas: because after all the "Japanese nurtured care", the majority of it is blandly flavoured compared to other Western foods. This article makes it sound like there are plenty of non-Japanese out there trying their hardest to make a bad name for washoku, when all they are trying to do is sell food that their target customers will enjoy.

smithinjapan. I'll admit that you make good points in some of your other comments, but bringing your "Saitama again" argument here is ridiculous. This isn't a case of someone going out and killing their children/parent like the other articles in the crime section. It's not like this guy went out of his way to run down a child in the parking lot of his apartment complex with some vendetta. You even admitted it in your first comment.

Posted in: 4-year-old boy dies after being hit by car; driver arrested See in context

Why isn't the parent being charged with "reckless parenting resulting in death"? I see small children running ahead of their parents in parking lots on almost a daily basis. Of course mom will lightly shout out ダメ~ in a tone of voice that holds no authority whatsoever and continue to walk behind the child at a leisurely pace without making any real effort to stop them.

The driver was turning into the parking lot so he couldn't have been going all that fast. Now he has to live with this child's death and whatever fine/sentence they slap him with just because of an incompetent parent.

Any scientists here care to enlighten me as to why there is traces of cyanide in the plants? Is it naturally occurring in them and she was using them to harvest it? Or had she just dumped some extra cyanide in there to try and dispose of it without a trace? How did the police track down these potted plants? This article leaves a bunch of questions unanswered as always.
