Posted in: 'Paris Cannibal' Sagawa reminisces over his grisly crime See in context

I remember this case too well! Not long after this creep was returned to Japan and then released, my Japanese friend and I went to a play in Shinjuku. During the interval and having drinks, my friends eyes suddenly widened and her mouth dropped. She told me not to look around and suggested we leave, immediately. She finally told me who was behind me so naturally, I sort of turned around and glanced as we walked out. Here was a very short, thin man dressed in a bright red suit, drinking champagne and having quite a discussion with what seemed to be, some rather elite foreigners. We were both disgusted that such a man could be allowed free and to fraternize with others, especially at these functions. But, I believe, due to the prominence and wealth of his father, he got off quite easily. I'm not sure but it seems he made his money by selling his paintings and books! Thank God I don't live in Kawasaki anymore! Who knows what lies in apartment!

Posted in: Killjoys demand end to Valentine's Day See in context

On visiting my neighborhood bar, I found 2 large groups of women drinking and exchanging chocolates, another group was made up of men who were simply getting drunk together! Not one couple to be seen! That's what Valentines Day has become in Japan, I don't think the demonstrators have much to worry about! LOL!

Posted in: Survey reveals 55% of women in Japan wouldn’t marry a divorced man See in context

I'll never forget what a Japanese friend said to me years ago when I tried to set her up with a very nice divorced guy. She kept shaking her head and saying 'no way' and when I asked why, she replied very bluntly, ' Japanese women don't trust or like USED men! I'm still laughing at her comment but it rings true in many cases here in Japan!

Posted in: Japanese wives in int'l marriages share what they hate about Christmas overseas See in context

I love Christmas! I have no family in Japan but I roast a stuffed turkey with all the trimmings, every year. The ex's family always looked forward to my Christmas dinners, except for the jealous sister-in-law who proclaimed, 'we don't need you to bring over turkey, we're Japanese, we eat sushi' . She said all this while sinking her teeth into a turkey drumstick, so I proceeded to remove it from her mouth and threw it into the bin. Relatives get sent Christmaa cards, I exchange presents with a couple of very close friends and I usually buy myself a gift that I really want. I like decorating my tree and home and I enjoy going out to meet friends for drinks to celebrate. I never work at Christmas, sometimes people should take time off just to enjoy some R & R, but, whichever way people choose to celebrate, it doesn't have to be a chore! Merry Christmas!!

Posted in: How do you feel when you speak fluent or reasonably good Japanese to a Japanese person and they insist on answering you in English? See in context

After living in Japan most of my life, I've encountered so many silly situations like this, I could write a book. The worst one I think, is, after having an hour's conversation about politics, taxation and hospitalization in Japan, all this done completely in the Japanese language, one of the women I had been talking to, suddenly piped up and exclaimed, 'WOW! You can use chopsticks ...can you understand Japanese language, too? ( this all said in Japanese ). I looked at her in awe and couldn't help but say,'Are you stupid or something?' Believe it or not, this woman was a doctor!!

Years ago, a friend of mine got his friends together on a rooftop and waited for the bikers who usually arrived around 2am. He and the friends had put together crates of tomatoes and when the bikers zoomed through the street, they threw the tomatoes at them which sent the bikers skidding!

Doesn't surprise me at all! If you remember AUM, many of the members were highly educated and from well to-do families. They were bored with their monotonous lives and easily influenced by something other than the ordinary. You'll probably find there are now members from every country in the world, recruitment has been going on for many years!

Posted in: Magazine survey picks Japan’s 10 best places to live in See in context

I've lived in Japan most of my life and though Tokyo was a fun place to live and work years ago, I found it becoming stuffy and way too expensive. Over the years, I finally moved out to the suburbs of Yokohama where there are lush green parks, cleaner air, friendlier people, reasonably-priced shops and less rent to pay. I'm very surprised that Yokohama city was not one of the top three. I certainly have no complaints about my city here!****

Posted in: Yamanote line trains to get new look See in context

Train culture is atrocious here! Kids and young people take up all the priority seats on the train, some even dumping their school bags or shopping bags in the spaces next to them! I was so pissed off once, I decided to sit on top of a man's jacket he had thrown next to him on a crowded train, he ripped it out from under me and glared at me as if I were in the wrong! The problem here is people just let it happen so obviously the ignorant selfish ones get away with it!

Posted in: 'Be a blank slate' - The way to get hired in Japan? See in context

Japan will very much stay a spoon-fed nation until they employ younger people in government who have been thoroughly educated overseas. Many Japanese complain that they never really 'learned' English rather, they were told to read it and write it and answer questions but were never really taught to think for themselves or ask questions, off the bat. This sadly, typically describes the way people are and are expected to be, when it comes to employment. Prior to the 'bubble era', companies would search for that one 'genius' and invest all and everything into that person, like a queen bee, of sorts. But, unless Japan changes its ways, most of the next generation as well, will continue robotically working their way up the scale and the rest, will simply move overseas where they can use their brains to their full potential!

Posted in: Cheaters beware – 30% of Japanese women have checked boyfriend’s cell phone See in context

That is more like 30% of women HAVEN'T checked their guy's phone(s). Many of the Japanese I know, especially the married ones, check their menfolk's phones on a regular basis and even discuss what they find on there! Many seem to think it's their right to because it's ALL in the family, whereas many couples allow each other to check out each other's phones to show how honest they both are. In my culture, this would be like going to someone's private drawer and opening up their snail-mail or peeking into their diary. I guess trust and respect for people's' privacy is a hard rule to follow here!

Posted in: 10 things Japan does better than anywhere else See in context

Surveys are very difficult to trust unless they are divided into groups - foreigners who have lived in a country for a long time, visitors, locals and age groups. As a foreigner who has lived in Japan for most of her life, I would state the following - Japan is tops in safety/public transportation/convenience/cleanliness/politeness. As far as I'm concerned, that is of the utmost importance. But, if I have to complain about something, it still is a red-tape country where people are still unable to make simple decisions by themselves, a somewhat robotic nation that is not going to change in the near future. That is my only gripe but, compared to other countries, Japan is still one of the best countries to live in and visit!

Posted in: What are your views on tattoos? See in context

I have seen some beautiful tats on women in the public baths, no doubt on places that one wouldn't normally see and some badly done ones on both men and women here. My advice is, if you're going to get one, make sure it's one that you will be happy with all your life and it's in a place that isn't going to sag with age. Make sure that it's done by an artist that is qualified and uses hygienic equipment and the best possible ink as cheap ink fades. Be absolutely sure that if it's written in a language you aren't familiar with, bring a friend along who knows what's being tattooed on you. I remember hearing of a young American who went to HK and got one cheaply done in the back streets. On returning to US he was proudly showing it off until a Chinese friend told him that he didn't have 'peace & love' on his back shoulder, he had 'tiny dick' tattooed, instead!!

It's a daily sight to see, young kids sitting in the silver seats using their cell phones, old people standing as there aren't any vacant seats, people pretending they are asleep so they don't have to give their seats away! Basically, the thinking here is always - SOMEBODY ELSE will do it!!

Trouble with today's youth in Japan is, they are bored, know very little about history ( nor do they care ), lack family values and desperately seek attention, one way or another. The minority perhaps, are as insensitive as this idiotic group displays but, it's sad when a leading nation is home to pathetic creature like the ones in this ghastly video! I'd like to see them try this stunt in another country!

Posted in: 7-year-old Japanese girl mauled by 4 dogs in New Zealand See in context

It should not be the dog that has to be put down, it should be the owner! Animals are part of a family and owners should be required to train with their dogs. There is no need for a dog to viciously attack anyone if they are properly cared for and trained. I was bitten by a bulldog who was let off his chain in a park and the owner did nothing to get him off me, she was just as terrified! If people are not willing to take the time to train with their dogs, they shouldn't be allowed to have pets at all! My heart goes out to the little girl and her family! Japan is one of the safest places in the world to live, sadly, many who go overseas don't realize it isn't as safe elsewhere!

All we know is this is definitely a revengeful act towards the mother and possibly her family. I remember a case years ago in the US where a man got his son away from the mother, took him to a motel and set the boy on fire. The boy lived but was disfigured for life. The father's excuse was that if he couldn't have his son, then neither could the wife! Very desperately sad for children who suffer at the hands of their own parents!
