Posted in: How do you feel about being a ‘gaijin’ in Japan? See in context

Most of these comments are too long to read, being in Japan for most of my life, I've come to not really think about the difference! I don't feel different and if people feel I am different, it certainly doesn't affect me. The first 7 years were hell, after that, I just seemed to fit in. I think if one perceives oneself as being different, then obviously one will feel that way. If I am going to be bothered about how I am treated because of my appearance, then I am not going to get very far in life, I am very positive and I am rightfully treated, like-wise. In the old days, Japan did not like having foreigners here but we have come a long way, on both sides! I try to bury the nasty treatment received by immigration officials and the like, years ago, because I knew things would change. It is must easier now for foreigners to enjoy Japan because of true globalization! Still, I miss so much of the old Japan! If you are positive, just go with the flow!

I go to Hokkaido to enjoy the snowy Winters, I go to Okinawa to enjoy the lovely beaches, I am lucky I have a choice I guess! Radiation is everywhere in our world, whether you like it or not! Paranoia is what kills people!

Let the poor old man rest! The devastation from the 2011 quake really took a toll on him and I understand how he feels he has to show his respect by visiting the sites and the people, but, he has done his duty and both sons need to take over, as they said. I do respect the Emperor for all he has done, time to lie back and take a breather!

Posted in: Activists hurl stink bombs at Japanese whaling ship See in context

I fail to understand why a Japanese whaling vessel needs to collect 900 whales for research! I wish the government would put this into writing instead of just keeping quiet on an issue that bothers the world, including the Japanese people. When hundreds of whales beach themselves, all I see is humane Japanese going out there and trying to keep the whales alive and get them back into the water, just like they do in other countries. Unfortunately, like in my own country of Australia, I get asked by family and friends, 'Why do the Japanese have to eat whale?' I keep saying, the issue at hand has totally nothing to do with people eating whale, but I can't, for the life of me, come up with a sensible answer as to why these whale research vessels need to collect such an enormous amount of whales. Where on earth are you going to put 900 whales to do your research on?

Posted in: What do you think about the government's plan to raise the tobacco tax? See in context

They should raise the consumption tax to 10%, it is rather stupid to raise prices on just one product! The government would make more money that way! A lot of smokers are definitely going to quit if the price is raised to 1000 yen, which is a good thing, health-wise, but it hardly beats the government's purpose of financial gain! Ridiculous!

Posted in: Meet the 'dirty girls' of Ayaman Japan See in context

I like comedy and fun stuff in Japan, but..please, spare me the disgusting! Especially the one with the looooooooong tongue that sticks it out all the time then tries to sit on a man's leg and "rape' him, so to speak! We can laugh as adults but these women perform at childrens' parties etc...please just stop the stupid unwanted acts of indecency! Let them get paid to do it privately!

Posted in: After a half-century in Hiroo, National Azabu to close Oct 31 See in context

This is very sad indeed! I used to shop there many a moon ago! If the excuse is that the building 'has to come down' because it is too old, then simply re-build! National Azabu is one of the richest supermarkets in Japan and a true landmark!

Posted in: Jun Komori, Ryo Imai hold wedding ceremony See in context

The dress and jewelry were obviousely rented, the wedding would pay for itself since guests pay out enormous amounts of money-gifts at Japanese weddings and I am sure the couple would have lots left over to put into their savings account. Very smart couple indeed, waiting a few years before they have kids! Unlike these stupid girls who get pregnant first then get married! I hope Jun and her new husband set an example for other couples! Congratulations to them both and I wish them every happiness!

Posted in: Naha air traffic controller falls asleep on job See in context

This has happened way too many times both here in Japan and other parts of the world. Train drivers, air traffic controllers, bus-tour drivers. security guards etc. Our lives depend on these people and we put our faith in them, automatically. It should be mandatory that there be at least two people working at all times. Most of these workers are working round the clock and unwatched and we have no way of knowing their physical status, let alone their ability to do their jobs.

What person thinks of digging such a gigantic hole as a joke and walks back to it with her husband, just to fall in at night, without anyone around as witnesses? Smells terribly fishy to me!

Posted in: 7-year-old boy dies after being flung out of van in highway accident See in context

Police here do check for people not using seat-belts and using cell phones, there is a 5000 yen fine, but this is only on ordinary roads. Though there are speed traps and cameras on the highways, the cops only seem to go after people doing just that, speeding! This is a very sad and unfortunate incident, I hope other people will wake up and learn from this!

Posted in: Japanese TV show invokes Hitler as motivator See in context

The Japanese young have no idea or understand history in other parts of the world, let alone, their own! They know the history of Nagasaki and Hiroshima but it doesn't sink in because they believe it is something of the past, nothing to do with them, this is Japanese culture, to move on and not worry about the past. Also, there are no problems to do with religion in the country, thus, the acceptance of anyone who comes here because they do not push their culture or beliefs on anyone. For most of the world, especially the European countries, we have been told over and over, the atrocities carried out by evil leaders, like Hitler and his followers but this has not been taught to kids in Japan in their history classes. Japan is a country that loves uniforms, there is a uniform for everyone, from the nearest kiosk to the nearest gas station, so uniforms mean, unity! It is hard to teach a society of young people about the pain and agony that one man delivered onto many nations, especially since the info has never been placed into their history text-books. I have seen so many stupid comedies here hailing Hitler and others like him simply because it is something funny to them, like he were a comedian of sorts, to them. We need to teach the media to be extremely careful of what they portray on TV, but we also need to explain why, to the somewhat dumb and hopefully, wiser, older media generation of Japan!

Posted in: Norwegian gunman wants to see Japanese psychiatrist See in context

I don't understand why people are giving this creep the time of day. He knows very little about true Japanese beliefs and culture, he wouldn't last long here. Great if he gets his request for a Japanese psychiatrist because the guy will just sit there with a smile and say, 'hai..hai...hai', leave, and tell them to throw away the key! Honestly, leave him in solitary and THROW AWAY THE KEY!

About time! I can't count the number of times I have almost hit a cyclist who has crossed a red light while talking on his/her cell phone! They should also ban mothers who have small children on their bikes, one in front and one at the back and who also juggle cell phones! It is ridiculous!

Posted in: Ichihashi admits to raping, strangling Hawker, but denies intent to kill See in context

For one thing, why did she let him into her room? It is believed she knew him and we need to know why he suddenly decided to rape her. He needs to explain himself and the circumstances that aroused him to commit such an act. This will help in understanding other such acts committed by people like him. Just passing the guilty verdict does not educate people on the situations that might cause provocation and perhaps in his case, his ego might have been hurt and he lashed out without thinking! We have to look at this very carefully and only he can provide the reason for his brutal actions. As we know, it was not premeditated murder, nevertheless, before we place a death penalty on someone, we need to know the causes, in depth!

Most Aussies just buy the tobacco and paper and roll their own. It is way cheaper and there aren't any boxes to look at! I for one, am not spending my money on buying brand ciggies in Oz! Just rolling like my grandad did, who happened to have started smoking at age 12 and died at 85 of old age!

Of course! Quake predictions are far more predictable than they were years ago, we certainly do NOT want another Fukushima near Yokohama or Tokyo, that would be devastation 10 times more than up in the East!
