He raped a woman that he was dating in her house?

I'll give you the benefit of doubt, BUT I do hope you aren't implying because he was dating her and it was at her own property then he's entitled to have sex with her. Just cause someone is dating someone, doesn't mean they must be having sex, it still needs to be consensual, the same as non consensual sex in marriage can be classed as rape (Spousal rape)

"...And we're not backsliding because we don't have the tools to prevent this. We do have the tools to prevent measles. We're backsliding because of the failure to vaccinate."

The polite way to say anti-vaxxers are stupid and not only endangering their own children, but creating a global issue. Most of the vaccines also work on an immunized herd method..

Posted in: Face tattoos: A trend that is here to stay? See in context

There is quite a difference on what type of face tattoo as well, coming from New Zealand the Moko or Ta Moko (Traditional Maori face tattoo) are not uncommon and come with cultural and historic background I feel these fall into a totally different catagory than having a cartoon character or some words randomly tattooed on the face. I guess both tell a tale of who you are..

@Akie

So you are saying you would be more than happy to be held in detention for something you didn't do, if someone brought false charges against you.. As that is the law, you are guilty until you can prove you are innocent.

For example if I was to report to the police you threatened my life with a gun and said you were going to kill me, then you got arrested you are more than happy to have to prove yourself innocent against my charges, and the police don't need to prove your guilt, as you are by default guilty.

Posted in: 'Short skirts cause sexual assaults,' according to Japanese school uniform poster See in context

Saying that wearing a short skirt is inviting someone to touch them, is the same thing as a man wearing an expensive watch and saying he is inviting people to rob him.

The wrong act is totally the actions of the person doing it, and not the fault of the victim.

I work at a large luxury retailer, and I always cringe when I see the grooming standards guide. To think how much a work place can dictate that for just 40 hours out of a 168 hour long week, how you must look, this isn't just basic grooming, which yes in luxury retail you should be well groomed, but dictating hair length, colour, facial hair goes above that.

For a job like train driver it makes even less sense as they aren't interacting with customers, their role is to drive the train, not woo the passengers.

Posted in: Court grants bail for former Nissan executive Kelly See in context

So he has officially been charged for something now? Or still held on suspicions?

I thought bail was for people charged on an offense, but seeking  temporary release before any court ruling occurs?

I'm not saying its a bad think he is released at all, it just seems weird to have to post bail against detention when no official charges have been made..

But then this whole 10 day cycle of "new charges" is weird to say the least.

Posted in: Dual nationals feel cast adrift in Japan See in context

@M3M3M3

Interesting link thank you, to be honest I had assumed the perpertual right, but then I hope by the time they "might" need to select one due to Japan's law, things would have changed, with the oldest at 7, that leaves 15 years (Hmm on 2nd thoughts thats not much time for Japanese law reform)..

We will leave that choice to the kids when and if the time comes, once they hit 22. I think both passports have their own power, and it really depends what they want to do..

But then I am hoping they can keep both for as long as possible and think it's silly to need to renounce one countries passport just to please another..

Posted in: Dual nationals feel cast adrift in Japan See in context

Hopefully this silly old law changes before my 2 kids need to decide their nationality, luckily even if they gave up the NZ citizenship to please Japanese officials to retain a J passport, as they were actually born in NZ. They could simple just request new passports, they could never give up the fact they were born in NZ, so always have rights to own a NZ passport when they want.

Posted in: Japanese school explains why it won't let cold schoolgirl wear tights under her skirt See in context

Apt timing, we were just disucssing how silly the rule for my son's school was that they have to wear shorts only, just this morning. As the weather had turned quite chilly so wanted to avoid the cold (as any sane person would) so both me and my wife suggested he wears his soccer socks, pulled up very high.

Stupid rule by passed I say.

I'd like to see if they want to cover the medical costs if they ban the long socks, as son eaisly gets ear infections and fevers due to those, due to a much narrower nasal passage so a simple runny nose for a normal nose, can easily block and trigger an ear infection for my son. So we aren't just trying to avoid a stupid rule, we obviously don't want the colds to come.

Posted in: Japan driver's license to start showing expiration with Western date See in context

I was just wondering if they will get rid of the era system on things that are going to expire in the near future, outside the current Heisei era. I had the fun task of renewing my drivers license in July, and it will expire again in Heisei 33, but of course that year will not occur with the change due next year. So does anyone with a license due to expire outside of Heisei 31 need to get it reissued, or do we count to a era year that won't come?

It's a very pre-meditated action on her behalf to, planning the poisionings so the deaths would occur outside of her shifts.

That alone should make her stand trial for 20 cases of murder opposed to man slaughter. And hopefully each as a seperate case, opposed to a mass murder case. Basically, she should get enogh jail time to never see the outside of a jail cell.. Need to push a strong message, as this isn't a unique story and there have been similar cases of murder by care takers.

As someone who rides a scooter to work, almost every traffic light I stop at someone (or sometimes many) will run the red the opposite phase, when I myself have a green.

I do really hope this poor girl wakes up, and has no lasting brain damage,

I do feel personal safety or safety for those under a parents care seems to be infuriatingly lax in Okinawa. I think I could count on one finger the number of people riding a bicycle with a helmet over any given week. And then there is motorbike riders who don't both with the chin strap, and the one which still really angers me as a parent is the amount of children I see with no seatbelts, clambering all over the seats. Or infants on the laps of drivers or passengers.

Posted in: New Zealand to tax tourists to fund infrastructure See in context

New Zealanders already pay 25% sales tax on everything. It’s an expensive country to live.

Unless its had a massive increase since I left GST (Good and services tax) is at 15%.. Which is still high, but given the small population and large(ish) land mass it needs quite a bit of revenue to support the infrastructure..

Like Yabaru started the comments off with, the only time the older people I know who have eaten it, was when they were in post war recovering time in Okinawa, where food of most sources was in short supply.

I wonder how stupid these researchers actually are if, year after year they still need to keep "researching" the whales in such a manner.

Also appears this thread has struck a nerve with some group, it appears almost every anti-whaling comment, or how the whole "research" is stupid is getting a large number of down votes.. Considering the normal daily votes on comments it more than a bit suspicious some group is actively attacking the votes.
