Posted in: Kishida appoints ex-health minister Goto as next economy minister See in context

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Kishida said he picked Goto based on his "political experience, high presentation skills and passion for economic and social reforms."

Totally makes sense as the list of qualifications needed to plan and execute the economic reforms of the world's third largest economy in a time of unprecedented economic turmoil.

When we see e-scooter users at nighttime in downtown areas, the first thing we suspect is drunken driving,

Well that explains it. Stop the bicycles and you'll find equivalent numbers of drunken riders. How about providing 24h public transit like any proper metropolis of this size?

However, unlike the last two years, revelers are not being asked to stay away as a countermeasure against the coronavirus. Shibuya Mayor Ken Hasebe said he hopes people will celebrate Halloween in an orderly manner..

Well that's the real intention isn't it. God forbid if people have fun as they like one day in a year.

Don't think this is a coincidence after the cyberbullying act has become law. YJ commenters gotta be careful what they say about certain government officials who might easily feel "bullied".

Posted in: Yen falls to 150 level against U.S. dollar See in context

The goal by the government could be to make Japan competitive against China in manufacturing to take a cut from them from countries that are turned of by the rising belligerence of China in recent years. That's what grew Japan during its postwar economic boom and that's the only game they know and they are unwilling to learn new tricks. In the western democracies, a government would face a big backlash (see the UK) after such policies that condemn the middle class to poverty, but in Japan, LDP is guaranteed to stay in power indefinitely so they can continue their "bold" economic plans.

There it is. The remedy to Kishida's low approval ratings. If he pays a visit, he could even go above water. Politics is an easy game in Japan.

"The situation has shattered our dreams and I'm deeply apologetic," she said after attending an event to commemorate the games.

Commemorate what exactly? The olympic record in number of bribery cases?

Takahashi seems to have been picked as a fall guy. There's no way this corruption is not involving LDP at some level. What will it take to get him to spill?

Posted in: BOJ chief stays course on ultralow rate policy despite sharp yen drop See in context

What this means is that BOJ and the government that doesn't sack them think that Japanese workers are still paid too much in real terms. They'll bring that down, which will increase profits from exports and put more money in the pockets of the owner class. That's the entire game here.

Posted in: Gov't plans ¥50,000 handouts for each low-income household to fight inflation See in context

Raising minimum wage will result in price increases but it will also force larger corporations to raise their wages because will now be competing with the minimum wage at the lower end. Increased wages will also force companies to improve productivity if they want to stay competitive. Ideally, there shouldn't be minimum wages in actual free market societies with a healthy job market and good job mobility like some northern European countries but unless otherwise forced by the government, the employers here know that they can keep squeezing their employees without increasing turnout. Years of giving them carrots with loose fiscal policy didn't work, it is time for the stick.
