Posted in: Google's Schmidt hits out at mobile patent war See in context

@southsakai It's the other way around. Allowing companies to simply copy each other would kill innovation. It's the protection of intellectual property that spurs companies to invest in new and original development. Look at the Mircosoft Mobile OS; original and innovative (and btw the prices for their products are similar if not cheaper than rival products).

With so many free messaging apps as well as Skype coming to 3G on iPhone soon it won't be long until most phone companies become mobile Internet providers.

Posted in: Woody Allen dislikes own films, but won't retire See in context

His films can be quite hit or miss but for a guy who makes on average one film a year what do you expect? I love Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Match Point and Scoop and I hope he makes another movie with Scarlett.

that ref.... who was paying him?? and to what end?? he can't actually be that inept... exciting game though. I was in the stadium and I can say the Japanese cheer squad was far louder and more unified than the Australians. It was quite impressive.

$15 for an iPad for an 8 hour flight... sounds good to me :)

@doshinshatcho I'm guessing the direct flight from Sydney isn't profitable enough. I've bought tickets from Sydney to Tokyo on Jetstar for $550 return, baggage was an extra $60. The best I've seen from any other airline is low $1000's.

Posted in: Japanese whaling: Why the West is in the wrong See in context

This was an enlightening article. It's interesting to see that there is at least some reasoning behind the research. This has given me some context for those images of Japanese whalers holding signs saying "research" with with a bloody whale carcass next to them. Without this context, it's easy to assume the research is unfounded.

In regard to the taste of whale, I have spoken to some older Japanese people about it. Everyone I've spoken to says it doesn't taste great, but they eat it because it makes them feel "natsukashii" or nostalgic to their youth. It's not something they eat all the time, just every now and then.
