There's a few things lost in translation here. Japanese articles reported that the mother had left the house for work after they had dinner together and didn't return home until dawn. She went directly to sleep in the room with the children and was the one who noticed something was amiss around 7:30 AM when Kenshi seemed to be deep asleep and couldn't be roused and told her husband; only then did he call the police but all he said was "My son is dead in his room, please come". He also admitted he was planning to kill all the children before killing himself.

Sad. Why do they even bother. Either be true to the original work and its nuances or just leave it…
