Posted in: N. Korea says US sanctions on leader 'a declaration of war' See in context

I'd be more worried about any U.S. citizens that are currently incarcerated in North Korea (and any U.S. citizens foolish enough to visit it in the future) like Otto Warmbier.

Posted in: KUMAMOTO EARTHQUAKE See in context

Thank you Japan Today for this article. Thoughts, prayers, folded paper cranes etc. are nice but will not materially help the people of Kumamoto (paper cranes and messages of support may give them some psychological comfort but are not the priority at the moment).

Can't they airlift in food if needed?

I wonder if he'll kill two birds with one stone and film a Japanese commercial while he's here.

Posted in: JR Yamanote line driver caught using smartphone while operating train See in context

The fear is that this could increase in the future, as more and more people experience separation anxiety from their phones while working.

Posted in: Agency issues warning about heat shock danger from hot baths See in context

If you feel yourself getting dizzy after standing up from a hot bath (happens to me many times) tense up your legs until the feeling subsides. The tensing pushes blood to your head (jet fighter pilots use the same technique when doing high-G maneuvers to avoid passing out).

She didn't shave her hair off? You'd think she would have checked out Kawatani's page on wikipedia and seen that he was married.

Storm in a coffee cup.

Posted in: Threat forces 'bon' festival to be canceled in Tokyo See in context

Will they also cancel the Olympics if a threatening letter is received? This seems like an overreaction.

I had to do a double take. I thought "stick" was a reference to something other than "walking stick".

Posted in: Man arrested for throwing bodily fluid on girl's skirt See in context

This is most unsavoury, from a most unsavoury person. Other people should not have to contend with one's bodily fluids (or solids).

Posted in: Minor tsunami hits Iwate coast after M6.9 quake See in context

The aftershock sequence of 3.11 is expected to be as long as 10 years, so no surprises.

Posted in: Wreck of MSDF copter found; 3 crew confirmed dead See in context

The crew were found with their hearts stopped. The critical thing will be how long they were in that condition, as a lack of oxygen to the brain can cause brain damage. Hopefully they make a complete recovery.

I believe if you are deported it's at your own expense.

Posted in: Japan tries to tap growing Muslim tourist market See in context

According to the wikipedia, halal slaughter requires that:

the animal must be slaughtered with a sharp knife by cutting the throat, windpipe and the blood vessels in the neck, causing the animal’s death without cutting the spinal cord

This is a medieval way of slaughtering an animal which causes a lot of suffering. I don't think non-Muslim countries should stock such meat. Only stock vegetarian halal food.

He looks wrecked. I think he's a meth addict and it's ageing him fast unfortunately. And ruining his teeth. Maybe no future for him in the band.

Posted in: If you found a large sum of money in a secluded spot, would you keep it or hand it in to the police? See in context

Sounds like drug money or a police sting operation. Best to just leave it, keep walking and pretend you saw nothing.

Posted in: Bono apologises for free U2 album on iTunes accounts See in context

Perhaps Westboro Baptist Church members should picket Apple stores, calling them "U2 Enablers".
