Posted in: Japanese firms hang loose on cash for investors, tight on wages See in context

Even Greenspan admitted afterward that he had been wrong to assume that banks acting in their own "self-interest" was >good for the economy.

You are barking up the wrong tree. I never said all entities acting in their own interest is good for the economy. I said it is best for AN entity if it acts in its own best interest, WHILE other entities do something else to lift the economy for everyone. Two different concepts here. Let others do the dirty work while I reap the full benefits.

"This may be a rational behavior for individual companies..."

Actually, it's not. Workers are consumers. Duh. If you don't pay them, they won't buy your products and services. >Remember, kids, insufficient private demand is at the core of Japan's low growth.

Actually, it is. In a capitalist system, each entity acts in its own best, self interest. When you say "If you don't pay them, they won't buy your products and services.", you are considering more than one entity(company).

I distinctly remember after the financial crisis in 2008, Obama was encouraging Americans to go out and spend money. If most or all Americans heed his advice, it would be good for the US economy. But as an individual, it was in my personal best interest to hold on to as much of my cash as possible, while hoping that everyone else heed Obama's advice and go out and stimulate the economy.

Same deal here, individual Japanese companies are acting in their own best interest, while hoping others will do what it takes to lift the economy.

“Our resource-poor country cannot do without nuclear >power to secure the stability of energy supply while >considering what makes economic sense and the issue of >climate change,” Abe told a press conference.

Makes total sense, Abe-san.

If one doesn't live anywhere near a nuclear power plant, that is.

most human in a similar case will act similar just something build into us and it don:t come from creed, culture, upbringing, what ever

Not when it comes to ending one's life. For people with Abrahamic faiths or atheists, they believe there is only one life to live, whereas people of faiths that believe in incarnation think they will be reborn and get a fresh start in life again. This difference can have a profound impact on whether someone chooses suicide as a way of dealing with issues in life.

Is this acceptable to the Japanese public?

Probably not. But then indifference seems to be the prevailing attitude of Japanese society. Sure, there is a vocal, minority protesting many issues plaguing the country, but the vast majority seems content to just mind their own business.

Taiwan, for one. Read up on food safety issues in Taiwan before you shoot your mouth off again, Texas Daddy.

Shame and very regrettable as Japanese bankers are not >willing take risk to keep Sharp in the camp...

Why? It should be a business decision based on numbers, not nationalistic emotions.

Besides, Japanese companies own plenty of foreign firms too, and that is somehow okay?

steep losses in their television units owing to stiff >competition from lower-cost rivals

Samsung and LG televisions have highly innovative features, sleek looks, and aren't any cheaper than Japanese sets.

I used to buy Sonys and Panasonics but when my last TV broke, I got a Samsung. Not for lower prices, but its features and its slick, one inch thick panel.

Stores these days are mostly stocked with cool looking Samsungs and LGs front and center, with a few sorry looking Sonys and Sharps and lower rung brands tucked to the corners. A big contrast to the old days when Sonys, Sharps and Hitachis were the premium brands.

Military bases are prime targets in bombing campaigns in an all out war. Better those not-really-Japanese Okinawans than me and my buddies in Tokyo.

Still think you can save $10,000 in the two years since graduating high school?

You are making assumptions here. Where in the article does it that the money was accumulated over two years?

The further incidents on which the subsequent four arrests have been based all occurred before the first >arrest. The couple have remained in custody from the >time of the first arrest.

Well then, shouldn't it be 1 ARREST and 5 CHARGES? The use of the word 'arrest' implies they were detained and released multiple times.

Poor choice of word on the part of the writer of this article.

Lots of argument here about how much help is available and how accessible that help is, etc. Also some, like Smith questioning the mother taking her child with her to death, with others saying she doesn't have the mental capacity to decide otherwise.

I just want to add to a comment about Japan being a rather uncompassinate society. Help may be scant, and even if offered and taken up, it is seen as a shame and the recipient labeled as 'weak'. This is not unique to Japan. Many Asian countries are similar in this regard. It is cultural more than anything else.

In my younger days, I tried to start a business and failed. Instead of encouragement and consolation, friends and family scorned, shamed and insulted me to various degrees, some done in passive-aggressive or backhanded compliment fashion. it scarred me for years to come and I feel like I never recovered from it.

Lots of cynical speculations on the husband's whereabout, but he could very well be on a business trip.

Being a sandwich generation is tough. Raising kids, taking care of elderly, the financial burden that comes with those, plus potential emerging health issues and mid life crisis, all hitting you at the same time. No wonder some people can't take it, and want out.
