Don't know what they will discuss since Mr Abe has already stated there is no room for compromise. China will continue to send ships until either Japan or China shoots first. Looks like China ships were seen again on Friday so they are not backing down

Allowing Japan to rearm and preemptive strike is very dangerous. History always repeat itself. Throughout Korean Japanese and Chinese history, japan has always been the aggressor. The shoguns attacked Korea several times throughout history while Korea never attacked Japan. . During WWIi Japan believed the US was a threat so Japan made a preemptive strike on the US which eventually lead to Japan's defeat and deaths of millions of innocent Japanese. Japanese should never be allowed to rearm.

Is this really news worthy? China and Japan both claim the island. UN, USA and the rest of the world do not recognize japan or China's ownership of the island. Only US recognize Japan's Adminstration of the islands but not the ownership thus China, Taiwan and anyone else can freely come and go as they like. The islands don't belong to Japan so Japan should stop taking a hard position and negotiate with the Chinese. The Chinese already stated their willingness to compromise. It's is only the Japapense government who refuses to negotiate.

If you think that Mr Ishibara did not plan for the central government to purchase the island them you fell for his deception. Of course Mr Noda and Mr Ishihara worked together for Toyko to purchase the island. It's called Good cop bad cop. If you recall the events leading up to the purchase , Chinese fishing boat ramming into Japanese coast guard ship, or Chinese nationals landed on the island and so on Noda and Ishihara felt that Japan needed to officially take control of the island. I read an article where Noda visited Ishihara several times before the purchase.

Fivegogo2003...it's been proven by historian that the imperial Japanese army forced women into the sex salves. I cannot believe any women who would volunteer to perform sexual intercouse with 100plus men per day. You have to be joking if you think these poor women volunteered. Your comment not only shame these women but all women throughout the world.

Japan is a great country and its politicians should stop trying to revise history and move on. Trying to revise history does nothing but create mistrust between Asian counties.

Agree. Give the islands to Taiwan per Japan's WWII terms of surrender. Taiwan is US A and Japan's strategic partner for US pivot towards Asia policy

Anglootau.... Why can't the Japanese politicians accept their country's WWII unconditional terms of surrender and give the islands back to China and Korea. The terms of surrender was to return all land acquired during Japanese imperialist Asain conquest.

ICJ will not even consider a case if both parties do not agree. That is why Japan has not taken their claim against Korea because Korea refuses and China has not taken the case to ICJ because Japan refuses.

All politicians flip flop on important issues. Obama has flip flop so many times I cannot count them all. In my personal view point all politicians are corrupt. Do you think Mr Abe or any other politicians are free of corruptions and etc. Biden Vice President of the USA brother joined a consultant company last year. In less than 3 months his company was awarded multi billion dollar contract to build homes in Iraq for the US military. His brother made millioms in fees snd etc. How convienent. Mr Hatoyama had the courage to face reality even though he would receive critism back home.

Japan does not own the islands. The UN, Europeans and even the US don't recognize Japanese claim. According to Japanese terms of surrender, Japan was required to return the islands back to China. So please stop saying Japan owns the islands and start to negotiate with the Chinese to find a solution before this issue turns into a shooting match which no one will win. Mr Hatoyama is a person who is willing to confront reality and try to find a solution that is a win win for both countries. Rather than trying to rewrite history, Japan should resolve all past issues and move forward and become the leader in Asia. Japanese culture and Japanese innovative spirit is something all Asians can learn from but Japanese right wingers continue to drag the whole country backwards with their radical claims and viewpoints.

Posted in: Abe says territorial disputes have to be resolved legally See in context

Japan unilaterally purchased the islands from a private owner setting off this dispute. Why doesn't Mr Abe follow international law and refer the island to international courts but Abe refuses to do so. Why? What is Mr Abe afraid of if he truly believes that Japan has indisputable evidence. Is it because the UN, Europeans and even the US don't recognize the Japan's claim to the island. US turned the Adminstration of the islands to Japan and not its ownership. After WWII Japan was required to turn over the islands to China/Taiwan according to Japan's terms of surrender. So Mr Abe should follow international laws and give up its claim to the islands per Japan's terms of surrender.

He is a man of integrity. Abe should follow his example and make peace with Asian neighbors rather than stir up hard feelings with South Korea, China. China offered their willingness to negotiate to resolve the island issue and Mr Abe should try to find a solution rather than show force. No one wins if a conflict erupts between Japan and China.

I hope Abe will listen but Park should listen too because if North attacks South Korea, Park will need Japan's support. Japan and Korea have a love hate relationship like the French and the English but the French and the English learned to work with each other. Japan and Korea must learn to work with each other since they are both on the same side. If North attacks the South China will not help the South. Only Americans will with the support of Japanese land and naval bases. So wake up Japan and Korea. Stop acting like children and grow up. Like it or not but the Koreans and Japanese are brothers. So start acting like family.

This whole issue is getting out of control. I just heard that the Chinese media is warming the Chinese to prepare and brace for war. Since the news media Is China's governement mouth piece, the government it is basically telling their citizens to prepare for war. I hope Mr Abe and the right wingers understand what they have started. Nixon once stated that China is a sleeping dragon and should not try to awake it. Unfortunately the sleeping dragons has nukes and 1 million standing army with another 1 million of reserves.

Hope Mr Abe finds a way to get out of this mess and clams things down but doesn't look like its going to happen with the things he's been saying and doing.

OssanAmerica. Washington is definitely worried about Mr Abe and the right wingers. That is why a high level delegation from US is visiting Japan. They are not coming to drink tea and eat cake. They are going to tell Abe to cool things down and don't revise the 1993 apology etc. Mr OBAMA is a left winger and Mr ABE is a right winger and guarantee OBAMA does not share Mr Abe View points. Obama had time to meet with President Kazai from Afghanistan and take a vacation but too busy to meet with Abe with no commitment to meet Abe in February. This in politics is called a Snub. Mr Abe should look at Israeli PM relationship with Obama. Israeli PM is a right winger and his relationship with Obama is very shaky. New sec of state Kerry is also a big left winger and is pro China so Mr Abe will have a allot of pressure to tone down his right wing views.

Both sides need to stop and take a breath. The situation is heading out of control. The Chinese stated that they are willing to meet Abe half way but Abe refuses. Return the island to the private owner which may give the Chinese and Japanese a way out and face face Return to the status quo before Japanese government purchased the island. Abe can claim the island still belongs to Japan and China can claim that both sides are returning to status quo.

Once Washington get the right wingers of Japan under control there will be peace but if Washington fails then history will repeat itself and the right wingers will take Japan to war and the Japanese people will suffer. Wake up Japanese! Japan could be the leaders in Asia like Germany in Europe if they stop trying to change history and move forward. Yes Japan of old was vert bad Admit to it and move on. Stop trying to deny it. Forget about the islands because Korea will never give them up. China is freely going in and out around the islands. What is Japan going to do. Shoot down Chinese plane which will start WWIII. If Japan starts the war the US can opt out of the treaty since the treaty is only valid to protect Japan IF attacked and not if Japan attacks first.

WilliB..please see below

Deutschlandfunk, DLF, a German media channel, said in its broadcast on September 21 that the root cause of the conflicts over Diaoyu Islands is Japan's reluctance to comply with the international agreements that were signed for Japan's surrender at the end of World War II.

Japan violates such agreements (Cairo Declaration and Potsdam Declaration).

By such agreements, Japan needed to give up all occupied territories, and Japan's legitimate territories should be limited to the 4 main islands of Japan. Other territories such as Ryukyu Islands (Okinawa), and Taiwan and its nearby islands should be returned to the owners (China - either Republic of China at the end of WW2, or after the 1970's the PRC).Suddeutsche Zeitung, another German newspaper, said Japan does not fully realize that it committed crimes against China before World War II.

First of all, it's not Japan's island...U.N does not recognize it as part of Japan..Last month, England, France, and German all rejected Japan's Foreign Minister claim to the island and the US has no position. So its NOT Japan's island...Second..China was willing to leave the status quo as is and allow Japan to continue to administer it until Noda and the radical right wingers purchased the island..Before the purchase Chinese Patrol ships were not sailing around the island..third..Japan already lost control of the island since Chinese ships patrol around the island with no limitation and hinderance from Japan. Japan is not wiling to use force to kick them out and the US is not willing to get involved so China won..

Bad move Japan..You should have just kept the island in private hands..

i agree that Obama and US will not support Japan over these islands..The US cannot afford another war..Americans are sick of war and the cost associated with it..Back home, most of my friends and family are either not aware of the issue or don't care..The US media pays very little attention to this issue..When I ask my friends about their thoughts over the island, they respond "what issue"..most cannot even find Japan on the map..
