Posted in: Modern etiquette: Umbrellas, backpacks and selfie sticks See in context
There's a special spot reserved in hell for people wearing backpacks. As someone who is on the shorter side of life, a lot of these ugly things end in my face. The only pleasure I get from backpacks is pulling hard on them when I'm about to leave the underground and watch their owners sink to their knees.
Seriously, if you're not on the way to a mountain expedition, forget about these things or at least remember that you're carrying your household on your back.

I sincerely hope that Visa, Coka Cola, Nike, Adidas, Sony, Emirates, JVC, McDonalds, Fuji Xerox, Fujifilm, Canon, Al;fa Romeo, Hyundai, Seiko, Philips, Toshiba, and all the other sponsors have the balls to pull out of FIFA. If they don't it means that they are part of the corruption.
Sony and Emirates already terminated their contracts at the end of 2014.

Something's fishy here, cuz that baby didn't crawl up there and open the window by himself.
You'd be surprised what a one-year old is capable of. The whole thing sounds absolutely plausible to me. My heart goes out to the parents who lost their little angel.

Thank you, USA and Switzerland, for taking out the trash. It was about time someone investigated in this kind of organized crime. Qatar and Russia would have never been chosen without cash changing hands and I sincerely hope both countries get stripped of the events.

Posted in: Australian mother abandons children to join IS See in context
I just can't understand these women who leave to join IS. Their parents left their home countries to allow their children to grow up in a free society and enjoy certain liberties and education and they throw it all away to get force-married, enslaved, raped and tortured.
The only good thing is that this mother won't be able to teach her kids the hate that IS spreads, the kids are better off without her.

@sandhonour
Various industrial sites in Western Germany (in the so-called Ruhr District) have gained UNESCO status - the cokery and coalmine Zollverein in Essen, for example - as well as Bauhaus style neighbourhoods in Berlin.

Bless the souls of the tokkōtai pilots who sacrificed their lives - betrayed by a government that fuelled its war propaganda machine by shamefully abusing its people's deep-roted sense of honor and loyalty.
These young men were sons, brothers and husbands and deserve to be remembered by their beloved ones. And it's no stranger's business to criticize this. Or is it the good old 'the winner takes it all' mentality that allows some nations to pay respect to their fallen soldiers (no matter how much blood they have on their hands) while others are expected to hang their heads in shame and simply forget the loved ones they lost?

I was more thinking along Queen Victoria but if you want to go the pop culture route... right on!

Not going to shed a single tear for this piece of trash. At least he has got his peace in death now - the peace that survivors and the families of the victims will probably never find in their lives.

surely there must be good Japanese parents instead of these child killers we read about constantly
Yes, there are! The Japanese parents I know love their children madly but those are, unfortunately, not the ones that hit the news.

Posted in: Japan must apologise for WWII until it is forgiven: Novelist Murakami See in context
I fully support Murakami's statement that apologies need to made until 'former victims have heard the apology enough'. As a German I know too well what that means. We apologized over and over again for the atrocities committed 70 years ago until those who suffered finally accepted them - our neighbors in Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium and people of Jewish belief all over the world. They might not forgive us for what we did back then but at least they recognize our will to prevent such things from ever happening again.
And here's the big difference: our victims were willing to forgive. I don't see that with South Korea and China. They keep teaching hate, they seem to desperately cling to the old feuds and use them wherever they seem fit.
It takes two to tango.

I have a tiny sakura blossom tattoo above my ankle and when I want to visit an onsen, I usually patch it up with a Hello Kitty band-aid - never had a problem with that. If a country has certain rules and traditions, you have to obey them. It's called respect and that goes a long way.
