become a legal resident if his or her business has created at least five full-time jobs in the U.S., attracted an additional $1 million in investment capital, or achieved $1 million in revenue.
So if the immigrant only creates four full-time jobs, he won't be legal. I understand the motivation to attract smart people but this seems like a huge hurdle.

Good to see recycling. Back in the bubble, second hand yet practically new stuff was left on the curb for the garbage man.

Good for Google for exposing. Now the gov't will have a harder time lying about their censorship. Of course they will lie and say Chinese intrnet users can access anything and they will say Google failed in China. Google had 33% market share. For anybody who understands business, they know that is huge.

Now Chinese internet users will have even less information. In essence by pulling out they just gave the censorship army a win.

Start up costs like renting space is very high. Cost of capital is cheap but hard to get. Lots of opportunities in Japan though.

Posted in: What is the best way to get more men to take paternity leave? See in context
@techall has a good point. "satogaeri-shusan" (home town birth) is common. The wife is gone for a few months. Sure he could go with her but it would be awkward hanging out in the in-laws conservative village. They would want him at work because a)its normal b) when he's around the wife is expected to take care of him too. Now, the concept of telecommuting would solve the work issue. Women in Japan stay in hospital for up to a week after a normal birth (unlike the US where they get sent home in under 24 hrs). Traditionally they do this because the woman should rest and if she is sent home, her house care duties start.
What is needed for paternity leave to take hold is a mind-set adjustment of the man's role in birth, house care and wife support. And the acceptance of telecommuting.

Posted in: Traditional approaches to Japanese language learning are changing See in context
it's rude to sit in a room full of Americans and chatter on in Japanese excluding others from our conversation.
This is why its hard to become bilingual growing up in the US. There is a cultural push to forget the old country, integrate and speak only English.
In Japan its the opposite; "guest" gaijin can't possibly speak Japanese so they are often expected to speak a foreign tongue. Then there is the genereal interest in Japan to learn English.
There are exceptions but the social result is that in Japan speaking another language is encouraged while in the US its practically discouraged.

If there's one thing Japan needs to get over it's this entire idea that presence = productivity.
@Frungy; so true and your logic is spot on. Its so annoying how salarimen/women think that if your not the office, you are not working. I think its jelousy and group mentality; we all must suffer and sacrafice together under the same conditions or its not work.
