He may get about 25years but if public opinion sway the sentencing asit is likely to then life without parole. In Japan you only get the death penalty if you kill multiple people. The guy wants to live that's why he decided against using a bomb that would have resulted in multiple casualties.

It was a crude gun. How he managed to fire it "safely" without having his hands shredded into pieces remain a mystery. But it also tells you that the guy have knowledge about weapons after serving in the Maritime Self Defense Force. The sound of the gun when he fired it sounded more like an explosive device (explosion) rather than a conventional gushot sound.

This crime has shocked the nation but the police need to be on the High Alert because copycat crimes are very common in Japan.

A bomb surely would have killed more people but he would probably have been discovered and arrested. For him to have been successful with a bomb, he would have had to set it up at the venue before the event. I am sure security checks at the venue before the event would have discovered it.

"The weapon he fired could have taken his hand off."

Was it the reason why it was covered in heavy duct tape? I thought he covered it in duct tape to conceal it. But surely the weapon look crude.

6 hours to announce he died, after being dead 30 secs after he got shot.

I know it's the Japanese way to wait for a doctor to confirm, but 6 hoursAs courtesy and custom demands, they wanted the 1st of kids Mrs Akie Abe, the wife to be present and inform her first before going public with the news. There's nothing wrong with that.

His security team obviously weren't up to the job.

Any of the videos I've seen appear to show his security team members either looking at Shinzo or the crowd gathered in front. Literally, no one had his back......Fail

The suspect according to news report used what appeared to be a homemade double barrel gun. Such a weapon is difficult to conceal. So his security couldn't pick this? As the writer above rightly said they were all focused on the crowd and the man .......nobody had his back. The assassin picked his position carefully being a former military man. It's so sad.

Shocking in a country not known for gun violence. However, political assassinations have occurred many times in the past, may be not as high profile as this attempt but they do happen here. The article states that " he is not breathing and his heart has stopped". This doesn't sound good at all. It will take a miracle to bring him back. Sad day for Japanese politics.

Posted in: How to make performance reviews less terrible – especially given challenges of supervising remote workers See in context

The main objective of performance reviews shouldn't be about who to promote or give a pay rise or sack. It should be about improving competence, quality of work, certain behavioural traits and productivity. It should not be subjective but based on objective criteria. If these are the objectives and the mode of assessment it takes a lot of the stress off employees. This can be done at the mid year point and the end of the year. Since the objective is to improve performance but not necessarily looking for slackers to sack, mid year reviews enable you to identify those who are struggling so early interventions can be planned to help them improve rather than wait till the end of the year.

Posted in: Madrid rallies past Man City to reach Champions League final See in context

night was a stunning collapse of unimaginable proportions by Man. City. Leading by two goals at the 90th minute and end up being overwhelmed like that. Unpardonable. Pep Guardiola is a good coach but not a great tactician. If you can't defend a two goal lead at the 90th minute then there's something seriously wrong. Pep is weak in reading the game in building a defense. All his teams games for their sweet flowing football are weak defensively. My fear is that theyay lose the EPL championship to Liverpool at the tail end. Back to last night's game, what Pep should have done was to switch to 5 back, crowd the midfield with 4 midfielders and leave a lone man upfront after conceding the first goal and as Real swarmed forward. But nights like this is why we love football. RM has been fantastic from the PSG game through Chelsea and then this. I am still putting my money on Liverpool to win this. Watch out for Casemiro, he would try to Sergio Ramos Mo Salah. Casemiro was lucky to have escaped being red carded last night. He was very rough in his tackles.

" I know of many who join groups of volunteers, Japanese and foreigners, who do this and continue to do this up until this day in places like Kesunuma that are nowhere near full recovery.."

Oh yeah, Rescue Japan, an NGO based in Tokyo and consists of volunteers from all over the world did and continue to do a marvelous job in Kesenuma, Soma city and other areas badly affected by the March 11 earthquake. They have never been mentioned in passing and have received no recognition whatsoever. At any rate, we are not working for any such recognition by the J government. We derive pride and satisfaction from helping human beings and not looking for any such recognition.

BTW, just asking. Has any African been awarded or recognized in these Spring award events? Just curious.

Posted in: Ukraine apologizes for juxtaposing photo of late emperor to Hitler in video See in context

No need for the apology. Indeed, Fascism and Nazism were defeated in 1945 The people shown in the video, Hitler, Mussolini and emperor Hirohito were the faces of Fasci and Nazism. They were the Axis powers who promoted and defended Nazism and Fascism. They were defeated in 1945. Even iftoday Japan is not a Fascist country, history can t be rewritten. It once was led by Fadcist leader called emperor Hirohito who led the world into a brutal war called WW2. So it is with both Germany and Italy, no longer a Nazist and Fascist country respectively. The past can't be wiped off. You have to acknowledge your past however unleasant andove on. All 3 countries are no longer Nazist and Fascist countries. So why Ukraine didn't apologize t Germany and Italy as well? Japan has tried so hard to rehabilitate emperor Hirohito's public image, but history cannot be rewritten.
