I was refused a seat on an overnight bus because I was male and the only seat left was next to a female!!!! WTF!!! That pretty much soured me on Japanese sexist etiquette....

The article implies that after 1860 everything was fine for the christians in Japan, but many were tortured and killed in the late 19th century after they came out of hiding....

Posted in: Whaling conference sees possible breakthrough deal See in context

whale was a part of a very very small number of Japanese's diet until after WW2. The japanese have sucked the oceans dry of fish and won't stop until there is nothing left. It is greed and arrogance, thats all.

Posted in: Japan, South Korea urge North Korea to avoid provocation See in context

Ossan ... I suggest you read a little history before you characterize the early S, Korean state as democratic. One thing I have never understood about this is that many in Japan say they were forced to go to war against the west because of sanctions against them by the west, but cant see that if N. Korea took the same attitude they would start a war with Japan because of the japanese sanctions.

Posted in: What's wrong with the way English is taught in Japan? See in context

As others have pointed out, if someone want to learn a language, then they will. For those Japanese that want to learn english, the biggest impediment is the belief that katakan equals romaji. With perhaps the exception of mainstream america, most countries realize that other languages require different pronunciation and therefore make an effort to pronounce foreign names in the news for example correctly. The Japanese arrogantly refuse to deal with any other pronunciation other than theirs.

Posted in: Lawmaker demands Aso apologize over his family's use of POW labor See in context

If Aso had not repeatedly denied that there was any evidence that slave labor was used by his families company, then this would not be an issue. Every time the Japanese govt attempts to rewrite history and deny the past then the issue is brought up again. The solution is simple, admit it, apologize, then it will cease to be an issue. The Japanese revisionists are the ones responsible for the past being dredged up again and again.

Posted in: Japan rejects IWC proposal to halt research whaling See in context

What everyone seems to ignore is Japans voracious greed for resources. Japan is sucking the oceans dry of fish and must move on to whales. Japan is the biggest consumer of rainforest timber on the planet. Japan cares not one iota for the planet as long as there is money to be made.

Posted in: Whalers 'on the run' again, say activists See in context

There are some mighty uninformed postings going on. Yes, SS have sunk whaling ships. A friend of mine sank the 2 in Rekyavik harbor. The 3rd whaling ship in the harbor was not touched because a human was on board. According to you guys damaging property is terrorsim? and BTW, my friend stayed in rekyavik to be arrested but the authorities left him alone because they did not want the publicity of a trial because they were engaged in illegal whaling
