OssanAmericaJUL. 30, 2013 - 07:12AM JST It's really amazing that China conceivably had a chance at becoming the "Asian leader" but blew it completely. Nobody in Asia trusts China anymore.

I wouldn't constitute Vietnam and the Philippines as the whole of Asia.

toshiko - Right now, China has only one ally, N, Korea which can not help China at all. S. Korea? It hates Japan but it ford not love China... Abe visited these countries to demonstrate these countries want to tie with Japan, not China. Poor China. It has to stand alone...Other Asian nations are too tied up with Japan

I'm sorry but I couldn't help but to laugh! South Korea and China are experiencing in what a many analysts are calling a "honeymoon" period. Economic and cultural ties are between the two countries are dramatically increasing. South Korea's domestic economy is slumping yet SK's GDP is growing largely to due increase in exports and oversea sales, particularly in China. In turn, Korean companies are investing in China.

Moreover a free trade agreement talks between Japan, China, and SK has been shelved, instead China and SK are aggressively perusing FTA without Japan. It's Japan that is in risk of being the odd man out of the regional and global politics.

In terms of China's relationship with other "Asian nations," China is trying to make amends with Vietnam and settle the their respective territorial disputes by diplomatic means.

Posted in: Abe calls for summit with South Korean leader See in context

Actions speak louder than words.

Abe needs to make concrete steps to show his willingness to meet with Park as South Korea has less incentive to make amends with Japan.

The South Korea's economy is becoming less reliant on Japan and instead focusing on China, SE Asia, and increasing it's market share in the US and EU.

When China and Japan become very friendly, both countries can demand USA to pay off bonds these countries hold to expedite USA bankruptcy.

A vast majority of US debt is owed to Americans not to foreign entities.

Moreover, Japan is far closer to "bankruptcy" then the US when examining the GDP to debt ratio.

The US public debt is currently at 113% of GDP while Japan's public debt is expected to hit 230% of GDP by 2014.

Posted in: Alarmed by anti-Korean demonstrations in Tokyo, anti-discrimination groups in Japan are calling for a law to make hate speech illegal. Would you support such a law? See in context

The Anti Korean Hate demonstrations should not be permitted in Koreatown to harass and threaten the safety of the residents, visitors, and businesses.

Any Anti Korean demonstrations should held away from Koreatown in a controlled confined space such as a park or a public space.

I've lived in Koreatown in Los Angeles - I am 100% the Los Angeles City government would not allow any Hate demonstrations to parade down Wilshire or Olympic Blvd on a weekly basis for public safety and business concerns. Any demonstrations would relegated to MacArthur Park.

I respectfully disagree with most of the comments on this board. I think that the meeting between Korean and Japanese FM is extremely important. Optics and public perception is one of the most important aspects in diplomacy. In the long run, Japan is far better off with China and Korea as partners as opposed as to adversaries.

BertieWooster is correct.

Apple's keys to success are innovation and marketing.

Apple did not invent the mp3 player, the tablet, or the smartphone -- they innovated on existing products.

BTW I'm not bashing Apple in anyway -- I LOVE APPLE products. In any business innovation and marketing is key to survival.

@smithinjapan - because iPod and iPhone started where, exactly? iPhone took five years to put out on the market and was the first 'smartphone', which everyone else then proceeded to copy, especially Samsung.

Actually the first smart phone design with a touch screen was created by LG and it was called LG Prada.

At the end of the day, Apple copied LG

Abe and the conservative party is seems to be taking a page out of the George W Bush and the Republicans' policies - Monetary easing and increased spending on defense/security.

Abe needs to tread carefully -- The Bush administration left the US economy in the gutter and an out of control deficit after 8 years of his policies.

As an American, I hope Japan repeals Article 9 so that we can bring our US GI's home and stop spending money on foreign lands.

Nor was Japan held accountable for the institutionalized rape of 200,000 women by the Japanese Imperial Army.
