gelendestrasseMAY. 16, 2013 - 01:49AM JST Talk about really getting upset over what is, most likely, nothing at all. Don't the Koreans have anything better to do? This just makes it seem that the complaints about comfort women, which have some basis in reality, are just more of the same. Anything to get upset about the Japanese? Get over it. Stick to real, current issues.

I agree, Abe gov't needs to stop politicizing their visits to Yasukuni Shrine or imply that that they'll revisit apologies made for Japan's past.

All this Nationalistic chest thumping by the right-wing Japanese politicians are only hurting Japanese firms' profit margins and more importantly Japanese global soft power.

Japanese universities need to actively encourage and recruit bright minds from overseas to enroll in J universities. Go to any top US university graduate school - They are filled with non American students.

The assumptions made in Mr. Sharp's piece is at best weak.

The article would be better served if a case study was presented (ie comparing management styles of Ford vs Toyota) instead making grandiose generalizations about the organisational structures of Westerns companies.

@mikihouse Abe's governent has started the proceedings to allow SDF to become a real army and is allowing a first strike policy in terms of real and present danger. This is no way to peace

I agree, it's time to close the US bases in Japan and bring our American GI's home to their families.

Regarding the comfort women issue - Japan must stop being so defensive about the comfort women issue and try to make amends.

In the US - Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese American lawmakers are spearheading efforts in New York, New Jersey, Texas, and California to set up memorials for comfort women. Japan is doing a disservice to herself by not acknowledging the gravity and significance of this issue - Japan is just PISSING people off!

@paulinusa worte

What a shame. 75 years later and still all this trouble

The rivalry between North Eastern Asian countries have been on going for at least five centuries.

The histories of Japan, China, and Korea are too entrenched for modern thought to apply.

As long the rivalry doesn't turn violent -- IT'S ALL GOOD!

@Mark Bradley, you're right, the Fed's QE or (printing money) policies to simulate the economy is a bit dubious and dangerous.

But hey at least your 401k, housing prices, and employment in the private sector is going up.

In the US, killing a whale, let alone serving whale meat is grounds for years of prison time.

Thus -

Killing whales is not okay and the act of trying to stop the illegal act isn't ok either - so where's the logic?

It's ironic that Abe is claiming that China is instigating problems with it's neighbors when infact :

Japan has Isle disputes South Korea, Russia, China, and Taiwan - Or basically every country in close proximity to Japan.

Abe's tuff man talk and his plan to increase defense spending and monetary easing is very similar to George Bush's policies. Just sayin'.

Reasons why the US will not get involved militarily in any Isle JAPANESE disputes especially with China -

1) Any resolution against China and Russia brought before to the UN Security Council will be vetoed by Russia and China, who have permanent member status.

2) South Korea, a strategic military US ally, would vehemently campaign against any US military involvement in the region due the Dokdo/Takeshima Isle dispute.

3) US, Asian (Japanese & Korean), and European businesses would loses billions from investments and the lack of economic activities in China and Japan.

4) China is largest foreign holder of US Debt and the 2nd largest trading partner.

5) After a decade of War in Afganistan and Iraq, the US public has no appetite for another war.

6) Asian Americans of all ethnic backgrounds, will oppose any US military involvement in any hypothetical war between JAPAN and CHINA. Asian Americans have more influence and sway with US lawmakers than right wing warmogers in Japan. This should come as no surprise but Asians (Japanese, Filipinos, Chinese, Koreans, Vietnamese, etc) in America really get along.

America will continue to advocate for a peaceful resolution in Japanese Isle disputes. Japan should heed America's position because Russia or China might call Japan's bluff - and no reasonable person wants that.

Posted in: China, Japan trade barbs over radar-lock near disputed isles See in context

So let me get this straight,

Japan has Isle disputes with China, Taiwan, Russia, and South Korea?

And now Abe and right wingers want the US muscle to settle all of the disputes with their neighbors?

Why can't the Japanese resolve they own Isle disputes instead of constantly dragging in the US?

Posted in: China must stop making threats in maritime disputes: Panetta See in context

This Article left an important point - Panetta will be leaving his post as the SECDEF . Moreover the SECDEF doesn't not make foreign policy decisions - He only advises the President.

When asked about China during the presidential campaign, Obama said that China is America's RIVAL as well as PARTNER.

Abe and his right wing cronies need stop the drum beat of war and get back to the negotiation table with China to seek a peaceful resolution.

Posted in: China must stop making threats in maritime disputes: Panetta See in context

Let me blunt, Abe is out of his mind if he thinks that the American public will support a war against China over the Senkaku islands.

A war with China will surely lead to-

The loss of thousands, if not tens of thousands, of American servicemens' lives The loss of billions of dollars from American investments and business activity in China Economic disruption that will lead to an US recession Disruption of social services as result of the inability to borrow money Devaluation of the dollar

America will advocate for a peaceful solution between Japan and China - a military option is off the table. The only way that the US will get involved militarily is the Chinese physically attack the US mainland.

Posted in: China must stop making threats in maritime disputes: Panetta See in context

When Allan Simpson (former Senator and half of the influential SIMPSON BOWLES debt reduction commission) was asked about the potential confrontation between US and China he jokingly said that Realistically the US would need to ask money from China to fund the war before going to war.

Abe and the Japanese need to understand the realities of the current state of politics, industry relationships with China, demographics, and debt & economic situation in the US before assuming that Obama will send in the Marines against the Chinese Mainland over the Senkanu Islands.

Posted in: China 'highly vigilant' over Japanese fighters flying over disputed islands See in context

The US will not go to bat for Japan and send in US soldiers to fight the Chinese if violence breaks out between China and Japan over the Senkaku Islands for the following reasons :

1) The Chinese owns to much of US debt. If the Chinese gov't dump US bonds, it will detrimental effects on the dollar and US economy.

2) US public has no appetite for a new war.

3) The US businesses that has relationships with China will not allow a war with China over the Senkaku issue.

4) South Korea - as much as the Korean distrust the Chinese they dislike the Japanese Govt more.

The US will only offer diplomatic support to Japan regarding China on the Senkaku issues.
