This is extremely disturbing and I hope the tourist and family recover.

What is going on in Japan??? I thought Japan is one of the safest areas in the whole wide world. If we go back to the 1980s, this kind of thing was unheard of.

Are tourists even safe in Japan anymore??? I may be visiting Okinawa in August.

Something needs to be done so there is an absolute that these random attacks will never occur.

I thought Japan was safe like other neighboring East Asia Countries. I do not understand what is going on??..

There is ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE for this disturbing offense. However, if they have jobs, why do they need to rob anyone?????????

This is disturbing. I hope the victim makes a full recovery. As to random standings, I do not understand why they occur. It makes absolutely no sense. Something sinister is occurring.

For instance, if we go back to 1980 to 1988, this kind of random attack was unheard of in Japan.

Something REALLY has to change so we can go back to the way things were in 1987.

Hopefully the teenage girl is going to be okay. That low-life should have the book thrown at him and never be able to walk free.

This is a shock that this could occur in Japan which is one of the safest countries in the world and even more shocking that this could occur in the safest town in the whole country of Japan.

Posted in: Convenience store in Nara Prefecture robbed by knife-wielding man See in context

It is a shock that this kind of thing could occur in Japan. I thought Japan like Taiwan has one or the lowered violent crime rates globally.

I feel like if we go back to the 1980s, this kind of thing was unheard of in Japan.

Hopefully the victims will recover physically and emotionally. With the way they are taught at a young age, Police Kobans scattered around, video cameras, etc how on earth could this ever occur in Japan which along with Taiwan is one of the safest countries in the world. Further, Japan especially Tokyo is relatively densely populated which means it would be much more difficult to commit a crime with witnesses virtually everywhere.

Also, the firing squad will puke be a good consequence for such psychopath.

This psychopath should have received eighty (“80”) years in prison without the chance for parole.

Posted in: Man arrested for robbery after threatening girl with scissors See in context

I feel extremely sorry for that girl. I hope she recovers. I cannot imagine how traumatic that is. That man should never be able to walk the streets again for eternity.

What on earth is going on???? I thought Japan just like Mainland China and Taiwan is one of the safest countries in the world where someone regardless of size, age or gender can walk the streets alone at any time of the day without being harmed. It is a shock that this could occur in a crowded area like Shinjuku where there are pedestrians everywhere. Almost impossible to commit a crime an extremely densely populated area like Shinjuku where there are pedestrians and Kobans scattered everywhere.

Something has to change. This kind of thing was almost unheard of in Japan in the past especially in the 1970s and 1980s.

“Lara FlintToday  09:12 am JST

I'm telling you guys, it's dangerous nowadays in Japan.

I always look around when I'm out and don't like to be followed, when someone is behind me I usually stop and pretend to check my phone or step aside and pretend to check vending machine etc.

Remember when in Japan, always be aware of surroundings.”

Roy SophveasonToday  08:41 am JST

Do tourists need to be concerned????

Yes, if as a random tourist you find yourself in Nishinomiya you should probably be concerned -- mainly with the question "why am I here?".

The above being stated, is Japan still safe for tourists or should they go somewhere else in the Far East such as China or Taiwan instead???

I thought we are in Japan, one of the safest countries in the world?!?!?! Shouldn’t Japan like China or Taiwan be one of the few countries where regardless of gender we do NOT have to look over our shoulders and carry mace. Japan is a first world country and not a corrupt third world country such as Somalia or Haiti. This is disconcerting and I hope whatever issue that is occurring gets resolved immediately so tourists and residents can go back to the way Japan was in the 1980s.

This is disturbing. How on earth is this occurring in Japan, the land of Shintoism, Buddhism, Godzilla, etc which is a Pacifist nation. I thought Japan like Mainland China and Taiwan is among the safest countries.

This is extremely sad and extremely disturbing. Why on earth did she have to be killed. Even if someone ransacks a house (I do not condone this), why do they have to kill?????

This is an extreme shock because I thought Japan just like neighboring Taiwan was among the safest countries in the world. Something needs to be done in order for these types of incidents to cease for eternity.

"Not a great increase but some serious issues. Japan is still a safe country to live in when compared with other G7 countries."

I am curious how safe Japan is compared to South Korea, Mainland China and Taiwan. Maybe Japan can learn from those other Far East countries especially Taiwan in terms of trying to get rid of crimes such as Gender related Crimes, random assaults, etc.

Thank goodness the 58 year old office worker is okay. I hope no one ever has to go through such traumatic event again.

It is a complete shock that this kind of thing could ever occur in Japan because it is understood that Japan along with Taiwan is one of the safest countries in the world. Further, it is also understood by Japan standards Aomori is one of the safest prefectures. This is an absolute shock because it is not like Japan is a third world country like countries in the Middle East, Africa, the Caribbean, etc. Japan is a vibrant country and this kind of thing is unheard of in Japan let alone Aomori.

Sad to hear about the deaths from this terrible storm. As to Okinawa, there are many good reasons to choose Okinawa as the prefecture of residence. One reason is Definitely the climate due to not having any winter weather and the lowest temperature at around 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Okinawa seems like it is the safest regarding weather hazards.

This is extremely sad and extremely horrifying. Miki Kawano did not deserve this. In addition now her child is without a Mother. That parasite should receive the death penalty.

It makes absolutely no sense why a disagreement over marital issues such as divorce, custody, etc (I am assuming it is something like this as in many cases) has to lead to this kind of sick and disturbing act. Even if a relationship does not work out, why can’t someone just accept it and either move on or be friendly in some kind of fashion. There is no need for this kind of horrible and disturbing act just because a relationship did not work out. There is so much assistance out there (eg Family Therapists) regarding relationships and marital issues and as a result absolute no reason why someone has to resort to this kind of act.

Reading this article absolutely makes Okinawa the best prefecture to live in Japan. No prefecture is perfect however at least Okinawa does not have to deal with Winter Weather as the temperature does not get below 50 and has the longest beach season. Choosing between snow and the beautiful seaside, I think I would take the seaside.

It is a total shock that this kind of street crime could occur in Japan. My understanding is that Japan along with neighboring Taiwan is one of the safest if not the safest countries in the world. Agree with Stephen Chin that the trio should be subject to the full consequence(s) accordingly.

If we go back to 1987, this kind of incident was almost unheard of if not unheard of in 1987. Something needs to change so this does not get worse. Hopefully, something can occur so it we go back to the way it was in 1987,

I do not condone what he did however being a caregiver is extremely difficult and grueling. Anyone who could assist in this situation (eg agencies) try and get every bit of money out of you. Caregivers are often in a difficult situation because in many instances any one who could assist often tries to take advantage.
