better than not going at all. Agreed. It is what it is, nothing to make a big deal out of. Everyone's trying to help.

Posted in: TEPCO to scrap 4 reactors at crippled nuclear plant; president hospitalized See in context

It took them three weeks to figure this out? Captain Obvious must have been on vacation.

The reactors have already done way more than 1 trillion in damages to Japan as it is. Most of the cost has little to do with decomissioning - it's a cost you pay either way. The cost of not decommissioning is actually greater.

Posted in: Should rumor spreading be a prosecutable offense? See in context

Wouldn't this mean the entire staff of Spa should also be thrown in jail? Quite ironic. Their entire business model is spreading rumors.

Furthermore, the examples cited in the article are pretty silly to try to prosecute. You'd have to prosecute every person who hit 'like' on facebook to something that's a rumor even if it were 100% true. The author really hasn't put much thought into this.

Kaptain you're projecting too much into other people's comments. You think people are saying things they haven't said, and you don't realize what you yourself have said. When they point out you're wrong, you just put more words into their mouths. Please stop while you're ahead.

Yeah, calling BS too on hindsight. It's plain obvious that a 9.0 earthquake would hit Asia, because it always has. This isn't even the biggest earthquake in recorded history, let alone even close to the biggest one that's hit Japan. Use some damn common sense please.

Posted in: What would you say are the main differences between the way the Japanese and foreign media are covering the aftermath of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami and the ongoing nuclear crisis? See in context

My wife yesterday commented how some information is actually censored in Japan because it's too embarrassing to the utility and government response. They also don't show dead bodies on Japanese news. Which they normally do when they cover other countries.

Using warehouses to store supplies meant to be distributed is extremely organized. But I guess some people don't understand how actual distribution processes work. I bet they think Amazon ships to 100 million people from 1 million sources. Nope.

Posted in: Radiation discovery fans food fears in Japan See in context

Most radiation doesn't penetrate more than a few millimeters - it's ingesting it (where it radiates you from the inside out) which is most deadly. Skin radiation is more serious when directly exposed to radiation blasts.

The reason iodine tablets are critical is because the thyroid is the first to go. I.e. protecting the rest of the body is meaningless if you ingest radioactive iodine.

There is nothing that actually detoxes the body but the body's own process itself. Medicines like iodine simply crowed the thyroid leaving no room for radioactive iodine to deposit but simply get excreted by the kidneys. The kidneys do not differentiate in the slightest between regular iodine and radioactive iodine, but with first dose of iodine already deposited the radioactive iodine will tend to get excreted.

I wouldn't trust any source that so loosely talks about the science of radiation treatment.

Yeah, it was bound to happen. Glad he actually got punished, as opposed to the mob of disaster looters in the US and (apparently) Australia as well.

Posted in: Divorce means liberation for some, virtual servitude for others See in context

Wrong Nessie. A lot of people work 13.5 hours a day part time. It's legal, and it's a huge difference from being a full employee in both benefits and the fact that you can be terminated or have hours cut on a moment's notice. I know this might be a surprise to an American, but Japan is different.

Posted in: Divorce means liberation for some, virtual servitude for others See in context

Yeah, sadly divorce is simply not a financially viable option for most especially in Japan. Chinese have long noted that the primary purpose of marriage is financial stability and children. Which is why we blindfold our children at their own marriage ceremonies. You get to see your wife after, not before!

Posted in: Ginza hostesses battle back against predatory work rules See in context

These rules sound arbitrary and in fact against employment laws. It's one thing to take a pay cut, it's another to hold an employee responsible for money another employee is supposed to be collecting. It's the business that hands out credit, not the hostess. And you can't just fine an employee for lack of business. Maybe pay them nothing, but making them pay you beyond that is the issue.

"Royalty deserves what they get from the tabloids. They are living extremely wealthy off the backs of real workers." Well said.

I do feel a little sorry for them, but if they don't like it they should simply abdicate. It's their life, and if they haven't realized it yet too bad.

Posted in: Ichihashi's book goes on sale; says he hopes to give royalties to Hawker family See in context

Ichihashi ran, he's guilty of evading arrest. He admitted to killing Hawker, whether it was murder, homicide, or an impossible accident is up to a court to decide.

Stop playing word games here. Of course nobody is legally guilty until a conviction, but guilt has more than just legal definition. I wish they'd stop brainwashing kids with the notion that guilt is somehow completely decided by the law when that is simply a legal concept.

Wow. At least we know he suffered every day on the run. And fortunately this being Japan, he will suffer every day in prison as well, unlike some other countries where prisoners are afforded humane treatment.

The grass is always greener on the other side.

Let's not get carried away here about population declines. White people are in decline as well. Many European countries and especially the USA are in constantly decline in white population - it's the immigrants who are having the babies. So let's not be so quick to gloat over the Japanese thinking our own population increase means we're good.

Posted in: Japan struggles to deal with child suicides See in context

The school does share at least part of the blame, but yeah the media does like to oversimplify. That said, the most important thing they can do is expel students who have a pattern of bullying. It eliminates the source of the problem and a lot of would be copycats, so everyone can focus on school. It's not just going to help the kids who commit suicides.

The other thing which is not proven but common sense is to teach children about bullying and get them to work together on it. It's counter-intuitive to human nature, but some schools have programs like this and claim they work. Why not try it out, if there's a real possibility they could work. Again, not proven but better than doing nothing.

mike is correct, the sick people are the ones smuggling them and the parents who brought them. It would be another thing if they weren't sailing across the ocean and just trying to cross the border. But they got greedy, and wanted to invade Australia. That's just dumb.

I get people trying to immigrate illegally. Just don't do something dumb like this.

If they know the businesses, they should simply pass a law saying every Yakuza owned or run business has to have a sticker on their front window labeling them as such. And taking down that sticker is life in prison. Problem solved.

“Elderly shoplifting cases have become a major social problem..We must seek how to rebuild our social ties.”

Okay..really?

“Some of the seniors here were convicted of shoplifting after having trouble making ends meet..In a way, they are victims of the bad economy, but that shouldn’t be an excuse.”

Yeah, they should just die.

No wonder it just gets worse so quickly, with logic like this.

The Bible had it figured out. Normally you punish someone sevenfold for stealing, but if they only stole food they just have to repay the cost. No mention of prison, because it doesn't work and costs you way more than what gets stolen. It's a vicious cycle and the cure is worse than the disease.
