Posted in: Naomi Osaka to publish picture book 'The Way Champs Play' See in context

Maybe Osaka is writing about Serena Williams? I really don't see any characteristics of "leadership, confidence, teamwork and resilience" from her.

How would you want her to be your nurse when you're in the hospital?

I’m curious to learn more about this. It sounds good on some levels (using renewables, less concrete, etc.) but what about weathering, seismic precautions, etc?

Posted in: Most major nations lag in acting on climate-fighting goals See in context

In general, governments are so disconnected with their constituents, so I would be very surprised if “climate change” is high on their to-do list. And even if it were, I don’t really have a high level of confidence that they are intellectually capable of any meaningful action, other than throwing money (your tax money, BTW), to create an illusion of taking “action “.

Although the passing of someone’s parents are always a very sad occasion, why is this particular one news? Anything so special about the circumstances?

Posted in: What do you think of the quality of education at international schools in Japan? See in context

I went to international school many years ago, and my two kids graduated from international school ten years ago. As some of the posters mentioned, it really varies depending on the school. The quality of teaching varies and also will change over time. I thought it was a great experience to mingle with other students from a variety of different backgrounds (including Japanese, usually returning from overseas) which is hard to find in local schools, and not just in Japan. My class size was usually between 25-30 students but had upwards of 10 or more nationalities.

Posted in: Gov't issues power usage warning for Tokyo area as temperatures soar See in context

Actually, there used to be (might still be there) a real time power demand chart in the lobby of Tepco headquarters in Uchisaiwaicho. You can see l the electricity demand spike at dusk when the neon lights turn on.

Posted in: How much for gas? Around the world, pain is felt at the pump See in context

What is really upsetting is that, in many countries including Japan, a significant % of gasoline and other fuels prices are taxes. At least give the citizens a break on that! That’s 100% controllable and would go a long way to help.

Posted in: Kishida plans reward points system to ease electricity bills See in context

Fujitsu and NEC will be lining their pockets with pork to creat this point system. You can also bet on bugs and delays, which will come with an Olympic-style overrun that'll negate any possible merits of a point system.

I hope they’re not going to take too much time debating whether something is an imminent attack or not.

Posted in: Average condo price in Tokyo area sets new high in fiscal 2021 See in context

I would not buy a condo in a really highly built up place like Tokyo or Osaka due to the high earthquake risk. It’s a matter of “when” as opposed to “if”. It would be a death trap with the police and fire brigades having to deal with literally thousands of other condos to rescue people and put out fires. Also, many of these condos have monthly maintenance fees so it isn’t like you just need to pay the mortgage.

Very curious as to what their passenger demand estimates are for this route. The article did not say how frequent these flights are, but I’m guessing maybe weekly as opposed to daily?

This is a good example of why I don’t trust governments with my money. I bet if the funds were coming out of their own wallet, they would never do this. But hey, it’s other people’s money and no consequences if things hit the fan.
