OJ Simpson was considered for the role of the Terminator.

Cameron, however, turned him down because “he’s not convincing as a cold blooded killer.”

Living in the US for several years and still needing an interpreter... ? That's why I admire Imanaga even more, who chose not to have an interpreter and tried to survive the language barrier on his own.

How long have you lived in Japan, or any foreign country?

Would you feel confident to give press interviews and statements and deal with high stakes contract negotiations with your foreign language ability?

We know he speaks in English with his teammates, the terp is only for the media and management.

I can guarantee that the Department of Homeland Security and the IRS are not interested in covering up a crime for anyone

I agree. The IRS and DHS have put away much richer and influential people in the past for tax and financial crimes.

Sometimes it almost seems like they are intentionally targeting the top bracket to make a show of force and send a warning.

Rich CEOs and Capital investors, people who are experts on how money works, don’t even know the details of their finances, because most of it is managed by other people.

You can’t expect an athlete or celebrity to have the same level of financial literacy.

No freaking way that much dosh went out of Ohtani's account unnoticed.

Sports stars and celebrities rarely know exactly how much money they have. They usually let an accounting firm and asset management agents take care of their banking and investments.

In Ohtani’s case, he literally has no interest in money. When playing in Japan, his mom managed his finances, and when he moved to LA; Mr Mizuhara took the role of his mother.

If you watched the Angel’s YouTube channel, you’d see his teammates often tease him for driving his own “mom van” and cooking his own breakfast. In one video, Trout is saying “Sho, you make more money than all of us. What’s with the dorky car.”

Chinese heavy glide bombs dropped from heavy bombers with no signature for air defense will devastate any small island defenses. Very inexpensive and very accurate and can be done largely from China airspace.

Chinese super weapons are largely overhyped and unproven.

If China was to begin a campaign of pure destruction, global sanctions and embargoes would cause internal unrest to the point of making a dedicated war effort infeasible.

China also lacks the airlift and amphibious expertise and capacity to put boots on the ground.

Xi is over ambitious, but not stupid. He saw what happened in the Gulf War part1, and what’s happening in Ukraine.

He also has a lot of “face” to maintain. If Taiwan declares independence, for example, it would cross one of his line in the sand criteria to invade Taiwan.

There is nothing to be gained defending Taiwan. The United States would throw Taiwan to the wolf, just like it did when it was called Formosa.

Successfully defending Taiwan from Chinese invasion would set off a chain of events that could lead to the total collapse of the CCP, and China splitting into its main ethnic regions.

Eliminating the only global competitor seems like a pretty big gain for the US.

Getting ready for a proxy war with China over Taiwan.

China can be contained with embargoes, trade sanctions and other diplomatic countermeasures.

China is not stupid either, and knows it’s place in the world order. China also has no voting populace to please every 2 years, and can enact policies that form the next 100 years.

If China did indeed invade Taiwan, it wouldn’t be a proxy war, but an all-fronts all-out war involving more countries than the Global War on Terror.

For a more flexible and expeditionary deterrent force, my guess is that the Chief of US Forces Japan will be appointed to the 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force Commander, rather than an Army or Air Force General, as is the current status.

To even the most casual baseball fan, he was known on a first name basis as Ohtani’s terp/manager, “Ippei” and was probably has about half as much screen time as Ohtani himself.

There are some of the reason I think Ohtani as well as others keep using an interpreter. I strongly feel he does not have enough confidence to talk in public officially in Enlgish, and fiven he is a perfectionits, he would like to avoid if possible talking in a broken Enlglish in front of people he does not know or trust fully.

Very true. Public figures always use an interpreter, unless they speak the foreign language in question at a professional level.

Every statement he gives is scrutinized and analyzed. If he doesn’t speak English on a professional level, there are a lot of liabilities involved in speaking in public. Not to mention legal and contractual issues behind closed doors.

I know for certain that the Dodgers have much more media focus than the Angels. So it wasn't a surprise that the L.A. Times broke the story. Playing for the Angels, none of this may have ever come to light.

I had the same thought as well.

The Dodgers would definitely conduct a risk assessment and background check on Otani and Mizuhara before signing them on to such a high stakes contract.

Mizuhara was probably sweating bullets at the thought, and praying that Otani stays with the Angels.

China has their gestapo in universities all around the world.

They gather information and report on Chinese students and faculty who have “dissident views.”

In extreme cases, sometimes the authorities don’t even wait for them to return to China before detaining them. They just straight up abduct them.

More desperately needed food and medicine denied the people of North Korea so that Kim can wave his stick around and imagine everyone actually cares.

Unpopular fact, but those missile launches are probably what’s bringing in whatever measly foreign investment that NK receives.

Buyers from Syria, Yemen, Lebanon, and recently Russia, are buying cheap NK knock off Scuds and Mid-Range ballistic missiles to support their wars.

When all the other costs involving a Mt Fuji climb are considered, ¥2,000 is but a drop in the bucket.

If the money is spent on trail maintenance and improving safety and emergency response, I’m all for it.

However, given the historic rivalry of Shizuoka and Yamanashi over the “ownership” of Fuji, I see Shizuoka advertising that their trails are free, and thumbing Yamanashi.

Neither imprisonment or the death penalty do anything to help the victims.

I say forced labor with the proceeds going to the victim is better. The victims get some compensation and society gets free labor.

Victimless crimes should be treated with rehabilitation.

Diego3:

Believe me, the thought did cross my mind, and my young imaginative mind was making up multiple scenarios of what to do if she was still there when I got back.

I had to leave at like 5am, because I was still in the military back then, but I left her a note that said something to the effect of; “I’m sure you’ve noticed by now, but this is not your apartment. Don’t freak out, you are at (my street address), and I found you here at 3am today. You look like you had a fun night so I didn’t wake you. Help yourself to anything in the fridge, and feel free to use the bathroom and shower. Feel free to stay as long as you need to.”

I didn’t have anything valuable in the my apartment, so having stuff stolen wasn’t a concern. And it was the mid 90’s and people were a lot more trusting.

This happens quite often in big cities with identical looking apartment blocks and lots of late night drunks.

I once woke up to a 30 something year old looking woman sleeping on my sofa and half empty carton of milk on the floor.

I had to leave for work, so I left her sleeping. When I came home that evening, there was a new carton of milk in the fridge, a 6-pack of beer, and 20 bucks on the table.

The seats on the Hong Kong, Singapore and Bangkok systems are scoop shaped, making it nearly impossible for someone to encroach on your space. London's tube has horizontal armrests that serve the same function.

If Japan's trains had these, instead of just long benches, most of the problems above would disappear. Although, a few cars on the Hibiya Line have such individual-type seats. Let's hope that turns into a widespread trend.

Designing the seats so only allows certain number of people to sit on the bench.

Japanese style allows either 8 sumos or 14 models to sit on the same bench.

Sardines, being the main food item for predatory fish, cetaceans and sea fowl, have incredible reproductive capability at the evolutionary trade-off of physical strength and intelligence.

The Japanese kanji for Sardine 鰯 literally means “weak fish.”

Even holding a sardine in your hands will cause it’s scales to peel off. Which is used as a defense mechanism to escape from predators. Sardines will literally shed their scales as they swim at high speeds to escape predators and leave a shiny decoy.

Evolution has made sardines both necessary and expendable.

Watch the documentary “The Great Sardine Run” that depicts the migration and predation of sardines, for the south of Africa to the northern pacific.

The fact that a shoal the size of this one survived so far north is testament to the resiliency of sardine stocks.

This is a fairly natural worldwide phenomena, the reasons for stated in the article.

The fish most likely ran into a cold water current that they couldn’t adjust to quick enough and we’re immobilized, or they were chased ashore by predators such as tuna or dolphins, or succumbed to oxygen deficiency from overcrowding.

Sci-fi will be retrospective comedy (my hoverboard is 12 years late, Back to the Future) as the predictions will be wildly off. At least BTTF was a comedy to begin with, and had a good script.

Historical films and dramas will still be relevant, because they show the era as it was.

Comedy will be a 50/50. The current generation finds American Pie and Friends offensive, and Amy Schumer funny. But who knows what the perception will be in 20 years when the wokes are telling their kids to “stop watching that ridiculous crap.”

Anything relying heavily on CGI will look cheap and cheesy.
