the police sometimes have their hands tied in situations like this. if the girl doesn't file an official complaint or get a restraining order, then the police can only talk to the boy and are powerless to do anything else.

again, we don't seem to know all the facts here so it's hard to blame the police for inaction, if that is the case.

i agree that couples need more time together, but revising labor laws will do little to change that. corporate culture has to change in j-land, and workers need to stand up more for their rights.

Why is it policy to start offering a reward after 6 months has passed? Rewards are meant to entice anyone with knowledge about a crime to come foward. Wouldn't the police want that info ASAP?

how will decentralizing golden week and bon holidays make japanese workers use more of their paid vacation days? japanese people don't use their holidays because their bosses and co-workers make them feel guilty for using them. overworked and overstressed employees makes for a stronger workforce, so the japanese ideology goes.

Can you name any grand initiative that Obama has realized? Yes, he rejected some of Bush's policies but he has also continued many of Bush's policies. Climate? Health Care? The 2 wars in Iraq and Afghanistan? Guantanamo? Regulating the financial industry? The unaccomplished list is endless.

Getting back to the story, I wonder if the "canny manager" got much of a bonus for the idea? As usual with most Japanese companies, the inventor usually gets squat while the company reaps a fortune. Lump of coal would be my guess.

Hatoyama is delivering as much "change" as Obama is. People expected a lot from both leaders but not much has materialized. What a disappointing way to end the year.
