I don't deny any reality..properly trained or not these guides can never be sure they are not in the same locality(bullet range) as drunks out shooting, whether for fun of food..whether for deer or bear (so these two species occupy separate ranges?.. that's probably news to rocket scientists)..it is self evident that you have a better chance of surviving an encounter with a bear if you have the means to shoot it dead..however that same means can also shoot you or another human dead..whether by accidental discharge or incompetence, once discharged the bullet doesn't care..guns do not assure human safety whether out of bear country or in it(which was your original statement with which i disagreed),some humans think they do..but graveyards contain many people who arrived there unexpectedly after finding out the hard way that what they thought assured their safety actually caused their demise. Apparently it does take a rocket scientist to understand that guns have killed far more people (in bear country)than bears ever will.My mistrust of people with guns is just a survival instinct.

Smith, so will you be kind enough to let us know how the problem should be dealt with? "It's not that they don't have these incidents in other countries, because we all know they do, it's that they do nothing about it here aside from blaming the women, or trying to ignore the issue, etc." Well i agree that this sort of thing must occur in other countries also..but other countries do even less about it than what you intimate Japan does, including not bothering to report it in the press. This is a none news story..in England if an Officer raped a woman it might make the national news..if one beat his girlfriend to a pulp it might make the local news..

nanda,"Bento, my implication was that whoever killed the mother and brother also killed the cat" why the need to imply this when all three are lying dead is a cold fact and the likely killer is obvious. no your implication was the perp of that crime might be the same person as has recently started maiming cats in the area.If it was merely as you claim then there would have been no need to go to the extra trouble of typing "unsolved murder" and highlighting the area in which it occurred.A simple statement about it would have fulfilled your desire for "good example of a crossover..." You included "unsolved" not because it is/was unsolved but because you wanted to imply a connection with this particular cat killer.

Moderator: Readers, please focus your comments on the Setagaya crimes, not unsolved murder cases.

ossan..you statement was "human safety is assured by being properly armed in bear country"..this is not the case as there is a much greater risk of being shot by a hunter than being killed by a bear(check the stats) in a utopia where all hunters are responsible,as you claim to be, then your statement may be accurate however we are talking about the real world where drunk fools go shooting for fun.Human safety is not assured by the carrying of guns..it is compromised.Without guns people would think twice about putting themselves in situations where they had previously only gone "assured" by their weapon.

"Comments made about being properly armed are meant as examples of how human safety is assured in bear country in the US and the hope that these "bear watchers" don't end up in some awful accident." An accident like, a hunter rustling in the undergrowth being mistaken by another of the shooting party for a bear and being shot?Human safety is not assured by the carrying of guns..

your right normal people are to busy shouting "don't waste any more of my time hang the witch" on other threads. Its poor behaviour as we look at it, but as the perpetrator looks maybe it is enjoyment , meat eaters gain enjoyment from consuming other animal species..what makes the death of one animal to provide food for a fat human any more acceptable than the death of another for fun...Only vegans have the right to preach about animal welfare.I bet some of the animal rights maniacs could even manage to postulate the introduction of capital punishment for animal cruelty as being reasonable.

in the days wbefore animal cruelty issues became fashionable, staged fights were organized between bears and lions, the bears always won.Stay away from bears.

with a continuation of the one-sided reporting of casualty figures the stomach of us/eu populations will dwindle, however with equal emphasis put on the high numbers of taliban fighters being sent to paradise(hehe) then at least some sort of calculation of effectiveness of the operation could be made, at the moment it is just an apparent loss of troops for no gain. The truth is the Taleban are losing the battle on whatever measure you care to choose, don't let the panic propagating press distort the reality.

"This 26 year old scum bag looser needs to be sent off to Saudi Arabia, Iran etc..they know what to do with rapists like this dirty dog, chop his head off in public!" Well maybe not, in iran, pakistan and other places where sharia 'law' is used, its not unheard of for the victim of a rape to be executed and the perpetrator of it to walk free after paying only a fine.Irans' preferred method of execution is suspended hanging, where homosexuals are also deemed fair game.

tkoind2, you expected her to move away when the crowding eased? but she did not..and by the sound of it you didn't move away from her either, which i am am supposing was an available option also, unless she had you pinned into the corner of the carriage..lol Perhaps she did not move because she did not want to draw attention to the 'uncomfortable' closeness by 'declaring' it suddenly unacceptable. An embarrassment becomes a greater embarrassment when it is acknowledged as existing..moving would have acknowledged it.

Posted in: British scientists claim to have created human sperm See in context

these scientists were so certain they had produced artificial sperm that they released a video to prove it, alas they were unable to release a video focused sufficiently well to show the artificial sperm as anything other than a wriggling shapeless mass..given that focusing a camera has been possible for many decades, you really have to wonder why the footage released was so poor. The answer is probably that in focus it looked nothing like sperm..but out of focus at least could be 'interpreted' as possible sperm. Previous to this they had managed to produce similar material in mice and indeed had fertilized eggs implanted them and produced micelets..alas all these offspring died of unspecified 'health problems'.

dammit..if your weren't looking how did you know her legs were drifting apart, and how could you tell she woke up occasionally to give dirty looks round the carriage?..telepathy? ..and waiting for the trains to stop suddenly in Japan sounds like a lost cause. The rule is if you're doing it in public don't be surprised if you draw an audience, either admiring or admonishing or indeed both.
