I have nothing against gay couples being together and wishing to have their relationship recognised, but suggest that another word be used for this. “Marriage” carries with it a set of male-female vocabulary that doesn't work in a same-sex context. Husband/wife, etc. Wouldn't "civil partnership" work better?

Don't know why the Japanese police can't stop them. All it would take would be to arrest and detain a few who disobeyed traffic regulations and word would spread. They shouldn't be on public roads in the first place. It doesn't matter how lucrative a business it is.

Posted in: Over 50% of car drivers in Japan do not stop for pedestrians at crosswalks, according to a survey by the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF). Why do you think that is? See in context

A good example of how misleading statistics can be. That 50% must differ according to the area. Where we live in Okinawa, people will stop even if it's not a pedestrian crossing. Near the bases, probably not.

The problem could be solved by a bit of planning. Road design in Japan is bad.

Kobe is my favourite city in Kansai. Really easy to navigate with mountains on one side and sea on the other, there is a wide diversity of food and all of it good. Every restaurant I tried was excellent. Great bakeries, great sushi, great Indian and Chinese food.

“In ancient Rome, salt was so central to commerce that soldiers were paid their “salarium,” or salaries, in salt, for instance.”

Salary and salt appear to be connected, but actually not. Roman soldiers were not paid in salt, but with coins. Historical records suggest that Roman soldiers were more likely paid in coins, with even a common foot soldier earning a fraction of a silver denarius daily. Salt, while a prized commodity for food preservation and seasoning, was not the currency of their compensation.

Posted in: Why is anti-Japanese sentiment remaining from the World War II era almost non-existent in Taiwan, Singapore, the Philippines and Indonesia, unlike in China and South Korea? See in context

Why? It doesn't take a lot of digging to find out:

"During its imperial era, the Empire of Japan committed numerous war crimes and crimes against humanity across various Asian-Pacific nations, notably during the Second Sino-Japanese and Pacific Wars. These incidents have been referred to as "the Asian Holocaust". The majority of these crimes occurred during the early part of the Shōwa era, under Hirohito's reign.

The Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) and the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) were responsible for a multitude of war crimes leading to millions of deaths. These crimes ranged from sexual slavery and massacres to human experimentation, starvation, and forced labor, all either directly committed or condoned by the Japanese military and government. Evidence of these crimes, including oral testimonies and written records such as diaries and war journals, has been provided by Japanese veterans.

The Imperial Japanese Army Air Service participated in chemical and biological attacks on civilians during the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II, violating international agreements that Japan had previously signed, including the Hague Conventions, which prohibited the use of "poison or poisoned weapons" in warfare."

Anonymous,

The expert class are humans, too.

That's quite true, but psychs are not experts in any sense of the word. An expert is someone who can do. An expert violinist can play anything on the violin. An expert painter can paint anything. What can a psych do? Ever hear of someone going into a mental hospital with schizophrenia or depression and coming out a week or two later, beaming and smiling, a well and happy human being, completely cured?

A psych who could do that might be called expert.

I've never met one.

The mass produced "dairy" products in konbini are pure garbage. The "yogurt" is a chemical concoction made from whey, emulsifiers, flavouring agents, preservatives and sucrose. The cheese is an insult to cheese. You can buy the same products in supermarkets, with the only advantage that they are cheaper. If you want yogurt, make your own. It's not difficult and there are artisan cheesemakers in Japan who do make some decent cheeses.

No mention of taxes here. Japanese taxes right now are crippling. In the boom years there was no consumption tax and income tax was much less. You got to keep the money you earned. Now you don't. It goes for LDP members' "entertainment expenses" and twice yearly bonuses. No wonder fewer people want to start a family. We can't afford it!
