Last time I checked, Japan had more terrorist attacks in the last couple of decades than most of the average European countries. Should Europeans warrant people that rightist Uyoku, big part of Aum or the Red Brigades are still alive and living happily in Japan?

I am glad to see that Japan is trying to be up to the expectations, and be leading superpower in culture, too, not only in economic brute power. I am pretty sure that anyone who ever saw the " Elevest – Japan’s first guide to elevators" "Kimokawa-kun - Photobook of gross-but-cute animals around the world" or "World Map for Laughs: Funniest Place Names That Actually Exist - Collection of place names that sound funny in Japanese" cannot deny the dominant influence Japan on the wolrd culture!

I dont understand your problem, guys. 40 officer dont necessarily mean 40 SWAT guy running after a single person on a street, like in a zombie movie. It can be just an alert to all the police officers around in the neighborhood, that "there is a guy with knife around, try to find him!" without any specific info where the guy went. He was already 400m away from the scene... Do you really expect the police to keep everything silent, and send out 1 or 2 guys with an order that "shoot some guy with a nife in this area if you see any!"?

I am strongly supporting fair (means truth should come out, and crimes should be punished) trials in rape cases, and the Jury system is really self-defeating. It is just a circus for the plebs. Collecting a bunch of morons who think like if the were in JDrama makes nothing good.

Hurray for Muslim word!

Executing someone for his or her religion, backed up by state laws: OK, it is not violation of human rights.

Drawing a cartoon: BUUUUH, you hurt my feelings!

Still not a murder suspect? Maybe if he would found some blood stain on his car, instead of a whole body on his balcony, then would be a suspect?

I think Obama was right, and nice of him to give such a gesture. But I dont understand why the Emperor didn't bowed to him. He also should show his respect to someone who actually a President of a country, not a shallow religious puppet.

timorboder: Read the article. Who said he will not have lawyers? He already has. Who said he will not got on court? No one. The lawyers are bitching that there is too much media attention, that is hurting his client's sensitive human rights, blablabla.

He killed 13 fellow soldier. He is a soldier himself, and his job and profession to protect his fellow citizens (including soldiers). And he cries for "fair trial".

Posted in: Is Miki Ando's skating coach a Japan hater? See in context

It is very impolite in Japan to accuse someone for what he or she said drunk.

If every nasty or offensive statement that some high-profile Japanese makes on a nomikai would be on news... The Japanese should grow up at least their own standards. I should just post what Todai professors or Society heads say on international conferences before they vomit all over everything.

Posted in: Policeman fires two shots during brawl with foreigners in Mie See in context

I dont understand this. Whenever the J-cops looking for someone (strictly only for just chatting, and nothing else) there are 10 going for a single man's apartment. At least that is what is always in the news, when the suspect runs away and a whole bunch of cop is unable to catch him. Then when they have to stop a supposedly mass-fight between 20 people (foreigners, for the Japanese readers), then 2 goes there, they start to run up and down, loosing the their on weapons etc. This story sound very stupid.

Posted in: Prominent Kyoto restaurants say no to Michelin See in context

I think there is a basic misunderstanding here from many who express opinion. Micheline doesn't say bad critiques, ONLY GOOD ones. So any uptight "I don't care if people like my food" actually sounds more like "Don't even dare to like my food, stupid gaijin."

Posted in: Prominent Kyoto restaurants say no to Michelin See in context

By the way why don't I find this piece of news in the Japanese news, instead I always read "Oh, how proud we are that Michelin gave us stars! We are so developed and evolved culture!"

So far, if you don't care what Michelin write about you, you don't need to read it. Whole generation of artist was able to cope with critique from the beginning of time, so self-important craftsmen should be able to do so.

Telling top chefs that if they don't appreciate Michelin and all it's trappings then they're not fit to cook food is insulting.

Too much ego for cooks who supposed to have gods called costumers. If a cook find insulting that he is judged by a costumer, and the costumer does it publicly, then he is stupid and fascist at the same time.

Posted in: Prominent Kyoto restaurants say no to Michelin See in context

Would enlighten me someone why is it arrogant that a food critique declares his or her right to say opinion about food? There is no consumer opinion in Japan: you eat what they advertise you. I see 10 TV programs a day on food and restaurants but all of them advertisments payed by the actual restaurants. For sure, they are outraged by hte "arrogant French" when once for a while someone actually have his or her oppinion on the service and food. Off course, it is always easier to say: "no gaijins!" and make some Nihon e Youkosou! campaign to show how friendly and hospital the Japanese.

Why one go for drinking, if wants to drive at home? It was a hostbar, come on, nobody goes there and order two hamburgers with a fry and Coke.

I mean, if I go to a bar for drink, I leave my car at home, and don't blame the bartender. If she would by alcohol from a vending machine, would the owner of the machine be responsible, too? Where does personal responsibility hide in this country?

it is the final days of the war in which America was the first and only country to nuke innocent civilians from the air. Millions of Japanese were killed to satisfy the bloodletting and to me the mighty mo is a symbol of America's revenge.

Who cares? It was 64 years ago. Get a life. By the way, there were no millions of Japanese victims, check any historical source. Even small Eastern European countries like Poland had much bigger loss in civilians.

My opinion about that manga is very low, in spite or because I live in a international marriage, too. It is pretty shallow, and full of these "look, a gaijin! and he eats spaghetti" kind of informative stories.

From the original book, it doesn't even turn out the Laszlo is an American. He is said to be Italian and Hungarian, then on the next page they discussing that he first heard about soccer in Japan. Yes, he is an Italian according to the story, who haven't heard about soccer till coming to Japan..

There is some sick irony in that the Japanese are reluctant to kill a puppy, if their dog accidentally has a bunch of offspring, and they look down really on anyone, who would do, but they seem happy and motivated when it is about killing their own family.
