The United Nations Human Rights Committee in Geneva on Thursday called on Japan to take responsibility for its use of so-called “comfort women” during World War II.

They also need to call on S Korea to take responsibility for its use of their own people during Korean War.

On June 25, sixty-four years after the Korean War broke out, Cho joined 122 surviving comfort women, as they were called, in a lawsuit against their government to reclaim, they say, human dignity and proper compensation. The women claim the South Korean government trained them and worked with pimps to run a sex trade through the 1960s and 1970s for U.S. troops, encouraged women to work as prostitutes and violated their human rights.

According to Osamu Tajima, the government document regarding the state-controlled brothels for the US military was signed by the former SK president and military general Park Chung-hee, the father of Park Geun –hye.

smithinjapanNOV. 19, 2013 - 10:04PM JST

When Japan is the victim it gets chapters.

I have a high school textbook right here.

It talks about Nanking massacre in 13 lines with no pictures.

It also talks about Atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 4 lines with two pictures.

Most of the textbooks I’ve seen are like this.

The textbook you are referring to seems problematic.

Will you please give me the source?

Which publisher is it?

I cant believe that how stupid comments people can write. Some people says it may be revenge of olympics,

I agree. It was kind of big news in Japanese media that right after Tokyo was chosen for 2020 Olympics, Turkish people started to tweet, “Tebrikler Tokyo” (Congratulations Tokyo). Many Japanese are moved by that.

She made a deal with the devil. Adult or not....a deal is a deal. Does anyone know a name of the devil (a promoter)? Please let me know. I truly appreciate it. Thanks. He is the one who is exploiting these women. He is a scum. I am very serious to know this man's name. Please help us. He will be notified a legal action by the International Human Rights Organization in Washington DC.

The scum’s name is Yasushi Akimoto. On December 1, 2012 at NHK-FM radio show he said, “I never said there is a rule that the members cannot have romantic relationship. It’s just an unwritten rule.” However, two members, Yuki Kashiwagi and Rino Sashihara said they signed the contract that said “no romantic relationship”. Several members left AKB or got demoted to lower status because they had romantic relationships.

Especially since that would put her squarely in the airport when calling, since Air France 275 is the last plane out of Narita and that's at 12:45 (JAL plane is 11:05, so probably not that one, though ANA has one at 11:50).

At the press conference, the lawyer said she went to Singapore, not France.

Does anyone know what time she was due at work?

She said she called at 11:00 and the broadcast started at 2:30.

According to her lawyer, NHK claimed that they did not say they approved her leaving.

If she has nothing in writing confirming she had cleared her leave with her supervisor so she will not win.

She called and told NHK she couldn't come in to work. She also said eight other workers in her section fled Japan but all were allowed back to work. An NHK spokesman said other foreign contractors had notified NHK at least a day in advance, while Bodin waited until 3 and a half hours before her program. Her lawyers said provisions of the contract say NHK can terminate the deal if the employee's inadequate work performance has no prospect for improvement or if a situation occurs in which the firm has no choice but to end the contract. NHK told Bodin that its reasons for terminating her contract were based on these provisions.

Posted in: 8 U.S. sailors sue Japanese gov't, TEPCO for lying about radiation See in context

I wonder if anyone knows who financed Operation "Tomodachi?" I managed to establish that it cost 90 billion dollars. Does anyone know where that money came from?

According to Wikipedia, the total amount that the U.S. military used for the operation was about $90 million

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Tomodachi

In the plenary session of both houses on March 31 (2011), the Democratic, Liberal Democratic, and Komei parties approved a special agreement on the so-called “sympathy budget” to use one trillion yen in tax revenues over the next five years (20 billion yen per year) to support the stationing of U.S. forces in Japan. The DPJ-led government claims that the “sympathy budget” is necessary to reward the U.S. military for its relief operation named “Operation Tomodachi (friend)” in the Great East Japan Disaster-hit regions.

@globalwatcher, I still appreciate your help (and operation tomodachi and all) right after 3/11 disaster. This is a separate issue, you know :)

The American gov't and therefore the military had their own more accurate radiation readings from the first week, which were passed onto the Japanese gov't but later denied receiving them. The Americans knew the level of radiation and were it was coming from and where it was heading.

Exactly!!!

Today (March 22, 2011) the U.S. Department of Energy released data recorded from its Aerial Monitoring System as well as ground detectors deployed along with its Consequence Management Response Teams… On March 15, 33 experts from the Department’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) arrived in Japan along with more than 17,200 pounds of equipment. After initial deployments at U.S. consulates and military installations in Japan, these teams have utilized their unique skills, expertise and equipment to help assess, survey, monitor and sample areas for radiation… Since arriving in Japan, NNSA teams have collected and analyzed data gathered from more than 40 hours of flights aboard Department of Defense aircraft and thousands of ground monitoring points… That data has been collected, analyzed and posted on the Department’s website at www.energy.gov/japan2011. Consistent with the President’s commitment to share important information related to health and safety with the public, the Department will seek to update the data posted on its website daily.

The result was totally as I expected.

I agree as I have been reading Yahoo comments (posted by younger generation) that favor strongly LDP and a number of young people with hinomaru flags in Akihabara gathered for Abe & Aso’s campaign speech.

If you are a foreigner in Japan, I would be prepared for Japan to become increasingly right-wing and anti-foreigner.

Maybe more like anti-Korea/China which would make my husband’s job (JCG) harder…:'(

I didn’t vote for LDP, btw.

I believe this was a forced double suicide. (無理心中 muri shinnju)

I believe you don't know what suicide means. I don't think it is possible for a 1 month baby boy to commit suicide.

This is not a shinju. It's a murder of an innocent little baby.

Just for your information, Shinju and Muri-shinju are different. Shinju means two (or more) people agree to commit suicide together. Muri-shinju means one (or more) family member (usually children/bed-ridden elderly) gets murdered by another family member who commits suicide right after the murder. Muri-shinju is categorized as murder by law.

Why aren't the bullies and the bullies' parents apologizing?!

According to Shukan-shincho, an emergency parents meeting was held last fall after the boy committed suicide. One of the bullies mother was a head of the PTA then, and at the meeting, she said, “They were just playing fighting(プロレスごっこ)My son is treated like a criminal and cannot go to school now. If my son committed suicide, the parents and teachers here are all responsible for it.” The bully’s father also said, “I have something to say, too. I know a lot of things…” in a threatening voice.
