It is not so much an apology that is needed. What is truly needed is for Japan to stop lying both in its official histories and its schools about what it did prior to and during World War 2. China is facing an uphill battle on many fronts domestically, and the government deftly and consistently uses Japan as a punching bag in order to deflect public anger directed at Beijing.
This. And they know Abe's nationalistic intentions and want to oppose it as much as they can.
