With the Tokyo government involved you can be sure this scheme will cost money not make it.

Adding plates to bicycles is not about safety, it is more of the creep towards surveillance 24/7. The Japanese citizens will not accept an ID Card, so the state is looking for alternative ways to monitor people.

Will he take a pay cut when this doesn't materialize?

Wage disparity is approaching a point where, if the lessons of history are anything to go by, violent insurrection begins.

gogogoMAY. 31, 2012 - 10:34AM JST Ishihara is only looking to profit from this, no support from this Tokyo person.

There is no profit in hosting the Olympics. Certainly Dentsu will profit from the bid, and numerous officials will be wined, dined and bribed at the tax payers' expense, but in the end the project will end up in the red for the nation. Japan has a huge debt and a lot of rebuilding to do following last year's earthquake, we do not have time for bread and circuses.

There is no such thing as a temporary increase in tax. The extra tax on petrol was supposed to be temporary, it's been in place for about 40 years now.

An increase in tax will kill the economy and lead to a decrease in revenue.

Why's everyone beating up on Eric? It's not like we are the target audience, so what if he is getting wrinkly, we all grow old. More power to them both, it's a fun show, upbeat and well thought out, even if it doesn't quite have the educational content of Peppa Pig.

I agree that the stations and trains are too noisy, the speakers on the platform are usually low quality and the sound is distorted, which is bad for your ears. Provision should be made for the blind but the volume over all should be turned down and the sound quality improved. The stations are also too brightly lit, they are lit up even during the day. it's a huge waste of electricity.

Posted in: Why are there so few benches and garbage bins in public places in Japanese cities? See in context

AUM shinrikyo was a convenient excuse to remove garbage bins and the expense of emptying them. There are few benches because they don't want to give homeless people even that comfort, those that there are have bars on them to make it impossible to sleep.

However there is no shortage of money to put iron bars all over the paths to obstruct people's movement, or numerous signs telling people what not to do. Entering any public park means negotiating an obstacle course, walking any path means avoiding pointless barriers every 10 yards.

I am convinced the general pessimism and lack of energy in Japan at the moment is a result of, or at least compounded by, this subliminal negativity and obstruction to free movement.

The talent agencies here do have a stranglehold on the business, the degree to which they restrict "talented" people is hard to say. They certainly "look after" their talents to the point of molly coddling them. Perhaps what Ms Sawajiri is really miffed about is the amount of money they take before they pay the "talent" their salary. Having said that if she goes up against Johnny's and kicks that old lech into the bleachers she has my vote.

Posted in: Anti-whaling activist Pete Bethune gets suspended prison term See in context

Quote me from May 27th on this site

Scenario one : He'll get a suspended sentence and be booted out of the country. Scenario two : He'll get a nominal jail sentence ......

Scenario 1

and me from June 7th on this site

I think he has to decide whether he wants to try and reduce his sentence or stand up for what he believes in. If he folds they might be lenient, but if he toughs it out he'll do time, but earn respect in Japan, which will do more for his cause in the long run than any antics at sea.

He folded, from the article above

In his tearful closing statement June 10, Bethune apologized for the trouble but said he never intended to hurt anyone. He also told the court that he will likely no longer continue his anti-whaling protests.

I wonder if I was right about earning respect.
