Posted in: Kagawa to take out frustration on World Cup opponents See in context

He's a talented player, but it doesn't alter the fact that he frequently looked lost in the Premiership and was too easily physically dominated by opposition players.

Posted in: Tech tips: A guide to upgrading, using XP computers See in context

In my local city hall they've probably just got around to upgrading to Windows XP from Windows 95!

That's good, I'm not even sure my city hall has computers, just a workforce of thousands who appear to be trying to look busy....

Posted in: Abe defends sales tax increase See in context

@hidingout When people are paying ridiculous prices for essentials like fruit and veg and then get hit by a tax increase, of course people are going to be upset.

I'm betting fruit and veg prices are much more reasonable in the countries you listed, even with the higher taxes.

Posted in: Dove’s 'Real Beauty' commercial a big hit in Japan See in context

Yes, it was maybe a little manipulative, and obviously they want to sell Dove products, but if it can help some women feel better about themselves that has to be a good thing.

The spoof commercial for men however..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8Jiwo3u6Vo

Posted in: Ideally, should English teachers at schools in Japan be native speakers? Can non-native English speakers do just as well or better? See in context

I've met plenty of Dutch, Germans, and Scandinavians who could speak better English than a lot of native English speakers. They also have experience of learning other languages, which will also stand them in good stead as language teachers.

Posted in: LINE to offer low-cost calls to landlines and mobile numbers both domestic and international See in context

Right. The call quality from Line user to Line user right now is pretty terrible. I've never managed anything like a decent conversation, over wifi or 4g.

Posted in: Controversial TV drama on orphanages goes ahead without sponsors See in context

@Billyhelper_33

While I don't agree that an adopted child should be brought into a marriage involving a couple having serious issues, I do think it's very sad that people would worry more about what others would think rather than help a child in need. Also, what kind of person would look down on somebody else for adopting a child, for giving them a chance at a better life? People who would act in such a way make me ashamed to be human.

Whoever wrote this woke up on the wrong side of the bed that morning.

I would say that whoever wrote that had their head screwed on straight when they woke up that morning.

Honestly, why would highly skilled workers want to come here in the first place?

Posted in: Do you think Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has done a good job since his election a year ago? See in context

Hmmm, nationalist tendencies, left Fukushima in a mess, lied in order to get the Olympics, and more recently the secrecy law. Like every predecessor he lacks the guts to make the unpopular decisions and do what Japan needs, instead bowing to the right....

Posted in: Prime Minister Shinzo Abe wants patriotism and moral education included in school curricula in Japan. Do you think this is a good idea? See in context

By "patriotism," do they mean more blind faith in a system which has no plans for the future, yet which somehow manages to make people believe that "everything will be ok, because this is Japan."? And if everything isn't ok, let's blame everyone who isn't Japanese.

If the animals could somehow be given weapons to even up this "sport," or other hunters put on their team to protect them, then I'd be OK with it.

Posted in: American casting for 'Hana Yori Dango' (Boys Over Flowers) TV series receives harsh Japanese criticism See in context

It does not make sense for casting aging actors and actress with poor acting....

Right....they should as in Japan, where every "music" star thinks they can act and gets put in primetime shows which just showcase their lack of talent.

I'm not sure this US version will be any good, nor do I care, but it's a bit rich for Japanese to criticise foreign versions of their shows and movies.

Posted in: Kagawa says: 'Ask Moyes why I'm not playing' See in context

Moyes has always been a very conservative coach, so maybe he feels that Kagawa doesn't offer enough defensive protection to the team. Moyes has always (at Everton at least) played games with the intention of not losing, rather than of winning, so that could also be part of his decisions so far.

I suspect that drivers here have forgotten what "とまれ” means by the time they start to drive. And they seem to think a traffic light turning red up ahead is a challenge. Consequences be damned!

Ah America. "The land of the free" indeed....

I hope a country that cares more about the privacy of its citizens than security takes him in and keeps him safe despite the American bullies.

Will tonight matches be broadcasted in Japan?

If Japan are not involved I would guess not. Poor sporting coverage again, like the Olympics last summer.

Posted in: 'Sopranos' listed best-written U.S. TV series, ahead of 'Seinfeld' See in context

Seinfeld? I never really understood the admiration it received. Seems to me there are any number of cleverer and better written and acted shows over the past 10 to 15 years.

That's because everyone has a different opinion. How boring would life be if everybody liked all the same things?

Personally, I would have put "The Wire" ahead of anything else on that list, but I know many people would feel differently. ;o)

Posted in: British PM Cameron heads off rebellion over gay marriage bill See in context

Let's hope the Tories do themselves irreparable damage with their infighting.

Gay marriage should be legalised, but the Tory party is doing its best to destroy the country for all but the right wing and wealthy people.

Posted in: 20 words of English origin that Japanese people often mistake for real thing See in context

In the U.K. Baby car = pram Order made = tailor-made

Also, we never say plug socket. We should say socket, but we often say plug when referring to the socket.

I'm from the UK and I would say pram for very young babies, after which it's a buggy.

Also, I always say plug socket. I guess these things vary within countries too!
