It's lucky she called him, otherwise he'd be a prime suspect., what with being the last one to see her and all.

These guys are all heart, like some Dickensian villans. How about making it harder for ninety year old men to wander on the track. I'm guessing he didn't vault over the fence.

Fair point. I guess I was directing that comment more to the people on here who jumped in to attack China. Having said that I'm sure Abe and co probably aren't getting the bunting ready.

Posted in: China mulls days to remember defeat of Japan, Nanjing Massacre See in context

China survived a brutal invasion from Japan, which cost the lives of millions of its citizens. They won through to survive as state free to invent whatever public holidays they see fit to. Many other countries celebrate famous battles etc. so why can't China. Japan, cry me a river. If you'd have won you could have told them what to do, but you didn't, so you can't. On another note, I wish we had more public holidays all round!

Posted in: Why do Japanese people wear surgical masks? It’s not always for health reasons See in context

Evidence points to masks not being effective, especially when used badly as most people in Japan. People constantly tug at the front of the mask, where presumably the virus is to be found chillaxing. It annoys me as it sets up the way of thinking that people wearing masks are helping prevent diseases and people with a cold who aren't wearing masks are recklessly endangering the health of those about them, despite the fact they are no longer contagious. Why kids wear them I don't know. The number of mask wearing kids I've seen pull them down so they can pick their nose and often consume the bogey afterwards is very high.

Posted in: Gov't says prices rising moderately for 1st time in more than five years See in context

It has to be the confidence trick of the millennium to encourage price increases in a country as overpriced as Japan. If wages increased first, then prices would surely follow. There's no guarantee that it will work the other way round.

Come 2020 SMAP will be getting close to their fifties. The thought of them sweating and gyrating their aged bodies to the cacophony that they pass off as music is not pleasant.

Posted in: NHK governor praises rightist's suicide in 1993 as glorifying emperor See in context

It is indeed troubling to think such extreme ideology has infiltrated a mainstream media outlet to such a degree. I wonder where all this will end. To be sure every country has its fair share of fanatics, but I wonder how many would be hand picked by the government to take control of the media? Not many in progressive, democratic country. All this makes me question how long I want to live in such an environment.

Posted in: NHK manager's Nanjing denial no problem, gov't says See in context

It gives me great satisfaction not to pay NHK fees and therefore contribute nothing to this mans pay. If you're in any doubt, how about watching The World At War, an excellent series by Thames Tv. That will show you how disgusting and shameful the Imperial army were at Nanjing. So terrible that even the local Nazis thought the Japanese had gone too far. It was made by a commercial broadcaster, not a mouthpiece of the government.

Posted in: Female Osaka school clerk's pay docked over tattoos See in context

Hashimoto has got this all the wrong way round; he needs to show people that tattoos are nothing to be scared of by promoting positive examples of them. I suggest he starts this by getting a facial tattoo himself, preferably a spiders web across his forehead.

Posted in: Consumer price hike data boosts Japan's deflation battle See in context

Can't see anything in this news that gives me hope for the economy. Inflation is not being caused by, or indeed causing increased demand, all that is happening is the prices of essentials are increasing, leaving me less money to spend on other items, services etc. Own goal.

Posted in: New NHK head's 'comfort women' remark stirs controversy See in context

Everything Japan did during the war was morally repugnant, from starving prisoners of war, to forcing women into prostitution and even compelling its own youth to become human missiles. The whole world, including the citizens of Japan itself were abused by a corrupt regime. That some in power try to defend this is quite depressing. I've now got one more reason to avoid paying NHK fees.

Posted in: Japan's whaling ships leave for Antarctic hunt See in context

From a purely practical view, this is a waste of time and money. There is not enough demand for whale meat for this industry to be viable, it is only through subsidies that it continues. The tax payer has to fork out money to catch meat that no one eats and antagonizes many other countries. Seems a bit bloody minded to me.

Posted in: Japanese cuisine added to world heritage list See in context

Pointless. As has been pointed out, if the Japanese had enough confidence that their food was the schnizz, they wouldn't need a certificate to prove it. Some Japanese food is fantastic, some of it bleeding terrible. Can't be doing with all the boiled vegetables though.

It's not your money to spend. It's probably not even mine, it's probably my kids or grand kids. Why don't you start paying of the debt, or at least let me spend my wage on my family, not some dam in the middle of nowhere, or a pile of tetrapods to foul up the coastline.

Posted in: Ishiba under fire for comparing state secret bill protesters to terrorists See in context

I don't like the way that terrorist has become a smear word, rather than referring to its literal meaning. If someone threw a bomb at this guy, then they would be a terrorist. People demonstrating are merely expressing the way they choose to in a free democratic society. Ishiba is obviously uncomfortable with this, and would prefer it if people had less freedom to object, just as is happening in other advanced democracies around the world.

People are angry because their snobbery and pretentious tastes are being shown up. In other words they've been made mugs of. In my opinion it's no less than I would expect. If you don't cook it yourself, you can't trust.

Blah, blah, blah. Is this supposed to make everyone rush out and buy sushi? I personally love the food of my country, Britain. Whilst being scoffed at by most people, I couldn't give a monkeys as I know when cooked well it beats most other countries hands down. Don't need my government to lobby the rest of the world to make that point. Only need to eat it!

Posted in: Yoko Ono wins German peace prize See in context

Campaigning for peace?! I don't think you'll find many people on the street in favour of war. John Lennon and Yoko Ono made the startling observation that a planet where people get along would be better than one where they fight all the time. I wonder how many people have come up with that. You don't get world peace by singing protest songs and sitting in bed all day. All talk no action. Didn't John Lennon support the IRA too?

Shouldn't name an economic experiment after yourself. If it goes wrong you'll be tarred forever. In fairness, I'm sure Abe didn't refer to it as such at first, but now he's said "Buy my Abenomics!" That'll come back to haunt him.

Posted in: Consumer prices at 5-year high, boosting Abe's deflation fight See in context

This is a farce, if the price of energy and food is rising, one can hardly be spurred to buy next years groceries today, so all that happens is that we pay more. The price of everything else is still falling, so if the deflationary line that deflation causes people to put off purchases is true (which I doubt), then people will still not inject money into the economy. Moreover, their disposable income is shrinking, which will discourage them further.

Posted in: Japanese firms resist Abe's calls to raise wages See in context

Abenomics failure was baked into the cake. The demographics of Japan mean that deflation can't be defeated. The currency may be debased, but demand will remain mired. How can wages rise in this environment? Demand from abroad will dip more from now on too.

People on here cheering the state endorsed murder of an elderly man would do well to consider if they trust the state with the power of life and death. Personally, I wouldn't trust them to run a p1ss up in a brewery.

Tax increase is a done deal. They're taking more money out of our pockets so that they can cover the country in more concrete.
