Posted in: Group protests to NHK over tweets considered prejudiced against Koreans See in context

In a mainichi article, it explains that Japan lost and Koreans were (rightly) pissed. It seems there may have been some Japanese soldiers on the train who were shoving other Japanese out of the way, perhaps to escape? While this may be historical record, it's not likely helpful. The Japanese citizens were pissed at the Koreans for being pissed... sheesh. "We (Japanese) invaded your country, and we lost so why are you so mad (to Koreans)?!" And that is a fact Japan went and invaded other countries. Japan has no right to complain if people hate them. Even though the war is long over, it won't stop generational hate, not yet anyways. But an angry mob smashing windows and throwing former-oppressors out windows? In any other country this is par for the course. But in Japan, it paints Koreans as savages in contrast to the "woeful, honorable, civilized" superior race of Japanese (sarcasm alert for those who need it). (sigh) The Japanese account this is based on was mad that the victors were "gloating" and dared to be so enthused. Did you none of you see what Connor McGregor did to a bus for an upcoming UFC match? For a UFC match - let that sink in. What the Koreans "did" was understandable.

Posted in: Mary Trump's book offers scathing portrayal of president See in context

Lol, the purpose of the book (or Bolton's book) isn't necessarily primarily targeted at impacting the election results. Mary Trump is sticking the dagger where it hurts, Donald Trump's sensitive ego. It will bother him that some people will believe some or all of what she says, that he knows he is an empty shell of a man that needs to be sucked up to constantly. To have one of his own "family" members (egads the betrayal) do it... lol. Whether Trump gets a second term or not... when the party is finally over and everyone takes off their masks (that's all you Republican freeloaders), Trump will find out no one really cared about him or followed him as a leader. They will distance themselves and throw him under the bus. Then he will again know what Mary Trump says is true that no one really cares about Donald. But how can anyone since he also manipulates and discards people left and right. What goes around comes around.

@thelongtermer Stereotype much? Do all Irish people just eat potatoes? Oh my... you likely have seen and experienced it from your vast sample of how many interactions/cases... 5? 10? 20? 100? That sample size definitely qualifies for a grossly misapplied statement. What Asians are you talking about? You know Asians aren't the same right? Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Thai, etc. Yes, some Asians, like all people, can be racist, but that doesn't mean all. So you are saying China was to blame, why blame Trump? It is Trump's lack of understanding to serious issues that is the problem. It is Trump's lack of response that is problem. So if a meteor crashes into large US city, and Trump sits on his hands with no plan and not mobilization of resources to provide medical care and emergency support... you are saying we blame the meteor? lol, the job of the commander in chief is to have a readiness plan and execute it in times of need, not be petty and deflect blame. A leader needs to be prepared to respond accordingly and rally the people. Trump is choosing to attack political foes. Gimme a break.

@techall It's got nothing to do with naming and all to do with intent and how Trump is choosing to create a scapegoat/enemy to direct hate towards. Words are not interpreted at face value. If that were true, sarcasm wouldn't exist. Get it genius?

lol... come on... you don't think these are legit yakuza, do you all? What respectable gangster sends 6 guys to rough up a chump who didn't steal money, didn't owe money, and just dating an employee. Do you think yakuza make more money with maid cafes or soaplands? What... a 2,000 yen scrambled egg set with ketchup smileys is what triggers a yakuza outrage?

Posted in: More details emerge on Ghosn's escape from Japan See in context

@nishikat Don't make me laugh, but I will - lol.

"Would Ghosn be free as a bird under the American system? Or is this just Japan hating? As far as I know he would also be under arrest for the same crimes in the USA. Also, upon conviction you do a lot less time in Japan than the USA. If I was going to be convicted then I would rather face the Japanese system."

It's not Japan hating. The fact that Japan can detain and intimidate a suspect before any proof of guilt for weeks is an issue. The fact he doesn't get legal representation is an issue. The fact that Japan boasts a 99% conviction rate is a huge, blaring, WTF is that issue. 99%... really? You sure? No person or institution is that correct. Either they are really guilty or the Japanese police force a confession. You think any civilized country accepts that? Don't put the horse before the cart. Btw, he hasn't been convicted. There still isn't any proof. All just media leaks by Nissan as an attempt at character assassination and to drum up public anger and support. Lol, they could have handled all this behind closed doors and a face-to-face chat. For how much he is claimed to have stolen (in the future? lol), stock prices and overall damage far outside that. Well played Nissan! Remember, not to spit in wind.

lol... everyone saying how did Ghosn escape Japan. Meanwhile no one questions how a non-Japanese speaking foreign CEO who doesn't deal with day-to-day adminsitrative work get past layers of the companies Japanese-run accounting department and hired Japanese auditors (likely one of the big 4 accounting firms). Ghosn cannot just write himself a check, and he can't just login to the bank's account and wire himself money.

What a guy... this Saikawa. He kept his mouth shut when his pockets were being filled. Another article even reported that he waited a week to sell some shares to get a higher price. Now, suddenly it's a "Ghosn" thing. Wow. It was a set up. Nissan should have just had a chat with Ghosn internally, no need to get police involved. Bet they regret it now with the whole company name and sales in the mud and a potentially oncoming "plastic glove" internal cavity search of the company's financials. They think Ghosn took a lot of money? And how much value in the stock market have they lost because of this. 924 yen Apr.1, 2019 dropped to 674 yen now. lol. Goodo Jobbu.

Petty wages? Well, they got paid a little cash and they get to stay on the yakuza's good side. I'd wager they didn't have much say in the matter. Plus obviously, if you came up from Osaka in the entertainment industry... even their company knows what's up. A slap on the wrist and some lip service. Lay low for little bit and come back in a year.

@JenniSchiebel lol.. umm... are you for real? Guess what, it is white people who came up with the terming "colored people" because who are not white would actually just expect to be referred to as people. Are the KKK just a hobbyist group interested in cosplay?

"Colored is an ethnic descriptor historically used in the United States (predominantly during the Jim Crow era), and the United Kingdom with its former colonies. In the United States, the term denoted non-"white" individuals generally.[1] The term now has essentially the same meaning in the United Kingdom, with "coloured" thus equivalent to "people of colour".[2]"

This is getting too complicated. This probably isn't just about Ghosn now but also Hironaka. Hironaka has beat the J prosecutors at their game twice I think - winning two other cases. This may just be a grudge match to also make sure that they don't lose to Hironaka again.

They probably suspected the possibility of a rearrest, which is why they would pre-tape the announcement. Speaking of dirty laundry, every organization and some of the people within it will have dirt. Might as well let it fly, go all in. Even if the public won't care, I'm sure shareholders would love to know what is really going on inside.

If the prosecutors find a way to shut down that video... well, we all know what's what.

Well... overtime in Japan is staying at the office long hours to look like you are a dedicated employee. It has nothing to do with actual hard work, efficiency or productivity. As long as everyone looks the part, that's all that matters. Overtime is also a nice little excuse for salary men to go drinking and date their secret girlfriend.

@Meiyouwenti You think the Japanese government wouldn't prefer supporting their own? The problem is that the long-term forecast is that with such a rapidly aging society, there simply won't be enough young Japanese "aspiring" to be caregivers, especially not those who want to go to smaller rural areas. So, don't be jealous. The government is actually preparing for 20, 30+ years into the future. By 2050, it's estimated that 1/3 of the Japanese population will be 65 years old or older.

@semperfi Oh, of course a system that allows prosecutors do dangle and string out charges just so they can reset the detention period is just and fair. Sounds legit to me. A system that also lets the defense have a massive head start in collecting evidence or altering it or destroying while the accused is unable to do anything to plan their own defense is obviously not unfair either. That is such a level playing field. wow.

@semperfi You dream on. The list of rich and wealthy who are jailed are only the ones that the network of more powerful and wealthy say to jail. It's all rigged and it's based on who you are and who you know. Horie was jailed not just because the law didn't care he was rich. It was because the old boys network wanted it. The guys behind the scandal at Olympus got 3 year sentences BUT all suspended up to 5 years - because they are part of the network. But go ahead and ignore what you want to ignore.

@Akie Oh right, the Japanese follow their own system of sovereign law, which is perfect for Japan. Of course, that's why they moved to copy the western system by introducing the jury system several years ago. Wait, by doing that does it mean that the Japanese system is not whole and perfect?

The last survivor is 95. All his mates have passed on. You think he really expects the court to rule in his favor? He knows what's up. But while he's got another breathe, he's going to make sure this stays in the spotlight... to the chagrin and shame of Japan's wartime past. This is really what it's about - keeping the spotlight on and pointing out that big ugly blotch on Japan's pristine reputation.

And you may want to actually visit the museum website. This is from the About Us section. So, go ahead, keep telling everyone to move one. The people who are most impacted (women) completely know what it's about. The state must take responsibility and prevent it from happening again. But don't take my word for it:

More than a decade has passed since the women survivors of Japan’s military sexual violence courageously began to speak out. Their stories have challenged us in many ways. They have taught us that war crimes are never rectified unless the State faces its crimes; that a genuine apology and promise to prevent recurrence from the State is an absolute necessity; that in order to overcome the past we need to keep the memory of past aggression alive, and pass it on to future generations.

Here in Japan, there are those who deny the fact of military sexual slavery, and try to evade responsibility for it. But however vigorously they may seek to deny them, historical facts can never be erased.

Please listen to the voices of the women survivors. Come and join us in asking why these things happened and are still happening, and in thinking about how we might work together to bring about a non-violent world where peace and equality are realities rather than dreams.

Posted in: Amid tensions with Japan, S Korea to boost world awareness on wartime sex abuses See in context

In all fairness, I can understand why the Koreans/Chinese still protest. It's personal, it's raw, I get it. Unfortunately, they will never get what they want from Japan. And nothing Japan ever does will give them closure. It sucks, but the more they dwell on the past, the more bitter and enraged they'll become. Unlike some peoples' tones about "just get over it already", I fully empathize with what has happened. If they don't try to look forward and to see that this generation isn't THAT generation, they are only hurting and cutting themselves deeper. Using a very incomparable analogy, if you let that guy who just cut you off in traffic piss you off so bad that you are driving like a maniac... you might end up being the one losing your life by driving blindly and recklessly. But let's call a spade a spade, this whole thing is political. The people on the street are a different matter in all countries concerned. In the U.S., even the Hatfields and McCoys finally stopped their generational conflict.
